1. As soon as I find a P bass better than something handmade that sounds good I'll let you know, but don't hold your breath!
2. I'd rather just have an ACG and over £6000 change, thanks! It's be better instrument as well as being cheaper too.
3. Indeed, asking "where do I start with jazz?" is like asking "where do I start with rock?". I suppose I'd start right in the centre of the map with some Miles Davis. Because through Miles, you can trace the evolution of jazz in a way. You can go backwards through his career and hear the more traditional stuff, or you can go forward and listen to the roots of fusion and eventually "popular" jazz from the 80's! That said, there is so much stuff to get into, but I do find jazz particularly dull. Which is odd, because I absolutely love fusion and could listen to it all day!
4. The youtube link at the bottom isn't working.
5. Some pictures would be awesome!
6.
man! thats something i would like to hear.. post up some sound clips Chris...
I'm a lazy cackhander, so here are some sound samples from the ACG site... http://www.acguitars.co.uk/docs/news/72.mp3 http://www.acguitars.co.uk/docs/news/83.mp3 http://www.acguitars.co.uk/docs/news/84.mp3 The first one is particularly good. The third one is a cover of a Tool song. And a related thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=3919
7. Basically mate, it sounds class. If you're ever in Newcastle give me a shout and you can come and try it. It sounds like Geddy Lee's Wal bass on Power Windows, but then I turn two controls and suddenly it sounds like Jaco Pastorius playing a fretted jazz. Then I quickly turn another control and I've got a slap tone to die for, reminiscent of the big American Boutique sounds you hear on the American gospel scene.
8.
+1. Also, to me a J and a MM sound very different, especially when I'm playing them.
Same here. Although I do tend to usually just solo the bridge pickup when I'm playing a jazz bass!
9. Well, if you've been there and done it the most important thing is that you keep hold of the bass thats right for you!
10. Something to keep hold of then! I usually get rid of my basses fairly quickly as I used to be a real GAS head, but since getting my Kubicki and my ACG I've been content! I always look at the ACG and think of how cool it's going to be to have this uber-rare, first build ACG in years to come! I'll be like some old collector who admires his early 80's Fodera!
11. Is it the first ACG bass with the fibre optic LEDs?
12.
be keeping hold of that one then!! so what so good about the ACG preamp...would love to here on.. i think im hijacking my own thread??
Well, a big part of the ACG preamp that is often overlooked is that it incorporates a filter which filters out sub 20 Hz artifacts. These will never be reproduced as a true sound by your amp but I understand that the amp will try anyway as it receives them in the signal. With this filter, the amp has more power to divert at frequencies you will hear! Perhaps this is why my ACG sounds so striking! Every time I plug it in it's fills the room and sounds incredibly present like no other bass I've had. The sound just 'jumps' out at you! It's also a very versatile preamps because it's based around the low pass filter attached to every pickup. You have two knobs to control the 'envelope' of this filter and another dual band treble control. What you end up with is incredible versatile and very useable. It's easy to get that burpy Wal tone, characterised by it's strong midrange presence but it really is it's own animal, and sounds suitably boutique to match! And it's not just the preamp; the craftsmanship is incredible. There is no-one in the UK today who can work work like Alan at ACG. Add to that the fact they play brilliantly and you're onto a winning formula!
13.
My headless ACG Harlot is certainly rare as it's the only one like it.
And another rare ACG in this thread - mine is the first Harlot Singlecut! There have been a couple more made since, it's a design that works excellently as a singlecut.
14. It's up to you what you do with the bass Dave, but I'd rather sell it on for £600 if I didn't like it and maintain my reputation as a decent and honest bloke to do business with via the forum. Like I say, a return of good fortune and all that!
15.
i guess these guys are having issues in there life...shame to ruin such impecable reps though.. Its like Mr Celinder.. didnt CK say he had some personal probs? Did Nick Tung rip people off Chris?
I'm not sure that is the case, he used to post on Talkbass and seemed like an honest genuine guy who had built basses for a number of years in the previous decade with a good reputation. I would suspect he was making more money from the restaurant business than he was from building basses and he had worked on new designs (in particular a boutique jazz design) and built a few new basses prior to his 'disappearence'. As I say, the poor bloke could have died for all we know, and we'd never find out because he was a one man band. I think most of his sales were generated through people speaking to him on Talkbass.
16. Apparently now Nicholas Tung has dropped off the radar and hasn't been heard from in over year, at least to the people who have paid for instruments from him and heard nothing back! How strange. Perhaps some tragedy has befallen him, and sadly the internet world would never know because he didn't have a website set up for his relaunch, he was just operating off a yahoo email account.
17.
over the last few years yes Chris... but there is always some saucy basses just around the corner.... damn this Bass Chat.. i just get seduced by so many lovely basses.... never see you with the GAS mate?
Well, I do have the occasional attack! I'd never let my Kubicki go. The word is that Phil Kubicki has moved from California to New Hampshire to "semi retire" and was finishing his order book before retiring properly. So that means no new Kubicki basses, and that brings me back to reality thinking "when would I ever find another one?". My ACG as well, it's just too good to let go. I got it for £950, which is outrageous value. The quality of it is as good as any bass I've ever played, even at 4 times the price! Between them, I've got nearly £2000 tied up in instruments alone and given that bass is fairly low down on my list of hobbies I don't want to spend more than that on it at the moment, especially because my real passion is cars!
18. Don't you mean how would you make money?
19.
John Myung used to play them...
Nice to see a Tung bass there, they are very well spoken of despite the fact that I don\'t think Myung ever did them justice! Nicholas Tung retired from bass building in the mid 90\'s to run a restaurant in New York, but there was some talk on Talkbass a couple of years ago suggesting that he might be returning to building basses. It was confirmed by a Talkbass user but I don\'t think I\'ve seen a new Tung bass. If you want to get in touch you can reach Nicolas at [email protected] here a couple of Tung sound samples: http://altguitarbass.com/sounds/Yvon-tung1.mp3 http://altguitarbass.com/sounds/Yvon-tung1.mp3
20.
so chris just say u bought a bass for £600 and someone offered u £750 would u accept it, now be honest mate, but even at £750 its still worth that or i wouldnt put it up for that now thats disrespectful if it wasnt worth the money but it is cheers anyway
Dave, when I was selling my Alembic I received an offer for £750 collected and my asking price was £600 (which I had paid for it about 5 months previously on the boards). £750 is a good price for a Bongo but £600 is an outrageous price and you've been very fortunate; however Slaptone would have liked more as I doubt the £600 he got for it covered his outgoing expenses. As has been said, this is very much a community-centric forum here where sales are based on trust and mutual respect. I think it's generally considered good form amoung the majority of users to "pay forward" your good fortune here by not making a blatant attempt at flipping a bass for considerably more than you paid for it. As someone said in another thread, prices here are very cheap, generally well below Ebay and high street used prices. We've achieved this by selling our gear at reasonable prices on to other forum members. There have been raised eyebrows in the past about people selling gear on for more than they paid for it, and given long term fluctuations in value this is probably seen as more acceptable than this quick flip. At the moment Dave, this looks like you've bought a bass with no interest in it as an instrument, just an investment for a quick profit. You and Slaptone live relatively close, south of the Tyne. It looks as though you've swooped in when you saw another forum user in need and now you're taking advantage of that by trying to turn a profit on a bass you're not interested in. From the chats we've had both on the forum and via PM you seem like a decent bloke Dave, but don't be surprised that a few users here are finding this all a bit "bad taste".
21. Yeah, I think they're floating somewhere in the mid £800 mark at the moment. It seems a bit pricey for a 5 string bolt on, although you could snatch a 4 string neck thru at that price. Still, if thats the going rate now it's the going rate!
22. You don't half get through some gear Bubinga!
23.
I fell in love with the Henman B4 as soon as I saw it. Lots of money and not too many about. It doesn't have a fancy exotic wood top, but is made with mahogany /sapele.
I remember seeing that Jauqo XIIXXIIVIIIXXIIXVVV or whatever his bloody name is playing one in a youtube video. I can't believe it's a $6000 bass when it looks like that, and sounds like that and has EMG HZ pickups in it! They're fantastic in a Spector Rebop but I'd ask for more from a boutique bass! And I still can't work out what it is about the bass that is supposed to make $6000 look like a reasonable price to the customer.
24. There will always be Thumbs around to be had. They're looking a bit pricier here than they have in a while, I picked up a 1999 bolt on model here last year for £590, and it looked brand new. It also had the more diserable wenge neck, which is generally a lot slimmer than the later ovangkol necks. The K5 is a great bass, so I wouldn't trade it away if you're happy with it. When you start working and get a bit of cash behind you you'll find you can grab those dream basses. You'll also find yourself feeling less inclined to buy basses, funny how that works!
25. Dave, I don't think anyone is disputing that someone may have gotten an alright deal on a B-Quad (another one sold here for the same price a few months ago when the market was a bit better IIRC). I think it's the way that you're going about this profiteering you're doing here, and it does seem a tad distasteful especially since you got a very good deal from another forum user and a local lad who was in a bit of a jam.
