It sounded fine just when i would go to play the harmonic on/ around the 4th fret. I know its the equivalent to the strings major 3rd. So i played my bass through the tuner and everything was bang on in tune except for these specific harmonics. The octave harmonics are fine both on the 12th and 5th fret, and the 5th on the 7th fret is fine. Just these major 3rd's are ever so slighty flat on the tuner.
  3. So everything is in tune except for the harmonics on the 4th frets. Is this down to neck relief or the frets? Or is it a common design fault?
  4. you are mostly likely correct and my inexperience is why i dont value it as much, but in my mind the standard of students that complete a degree in music performance could be higher if it wasn't for the educational system. Having said all this, assignments are only 50%, and the other 50% is fantastic
  5. obviously yes learning contacts through these kinds of places is invaluable and i've been playing with some great players which is a lot of fun. My thing is, if the assignments wern't there students would devote more time on socializing, gigging, and gaining the skills that would be used in the industry. From what iv learnt, writing 5000 words on crap isn't going to get me a gig as a performing musician
  6. I've been on a degree course at ACM for 6 months now having completed the HnD last year. And iv got to say the Degree is not what i was expecting. It seems that 50% of my time is having to be devoted to writing assignments. I know it has to be part of the course to validate it as a degree but i would rather spend my time getting good on my instrument and learning about music rather than writing an essay on how i go about transcribing a song. Surely theres no right or wrong way to transcribe as long as you get the right end result anyway? But the thing is if i spent all this time just playing bass i would be twice as good as i am now. I just completed all my Coursework and handed it in 6 weeks ago, it took about 4 weeks to complete. Now i have been given the briefs for the next batch of assignments which are supposed to be in soon. The worst part is i know people at ICMP and Birmingham Conservatoire and their going through the same thing. So anybody thinking of taking up a Music Degree think hard about it because i am starting to see why people like Janek Gwizdala left theirs before they completed it.

  10. Theres a few on the Kilburn high street north london. There was a delicious Fender FMT V string on ebay from a cash convertors and someone on here bought it dead cheap, like £1500 off its new value
  11. I would like to see more clips of him playing fingerstyle. As i can't do the double thumb tihng yet it'd be nice to relate with what he's doing. Also when he does it sounds fantastic
  12. It says he is an innovative player on his website? I think he will find that when i was 10 and handed a guitar i too was making lots of twangy sounds and playing nothing that makes musical sense. So innovative he is not...... now show me the drummer jokes thread, iv got some great ones

  14. There are many fakes around, my dad worked in a shop where they had a fake epiphone, the only give away was that the "h" was in the wrong place on the headstock. Still apparently Gibson were very helpful in dealing with the issue and sent plenty of photo's of what to look out for on the fake models

  17. Possibly for trade is a 2006 Musicman Stingray in Teal with a black scratchplate and maple neck. Its been my main bass for the last 3 years but after recently purchasing a Jazz i've decided i prefer the jazz. The Musicman is in good condition, with a few scratches on the back and a little chip at the side. I've recently strung it with GHS Boomers which i think work best with this bass. It has a great growl to the sound and is just what you expect from a Stingray (Think Louis Johnson, Benard Edwards and Flea). As for trades, i want a 5 string Jazz type bass with active p'ups. I would be willing to put some cash towards it depending on the bass. PM any offers Ollie

I would say £1k for a 2007 SR5 is still very overpriced. Also if you think BG is bad for overpricing then check out New kings Road Vintage pricing, their basses go over 10k!!!! Back to the whole vintage thing, i wouldn't pay £8k for a bass but i would really like a bass that made me feel like James Jameson or Duck Dunn. I think thats why some people do it, and if i had that amount going spare i definately would

  23. You can raise either side of a pickup. They usually use foam or sponge underneath and you can loosen or tighten the screws. If you wanted more volume from the lower strings then you can raise the left side of the pickup by loosening the screws. A problem with Mexican fenders is they seem to have poor pickups compared to the american market so that there is a difference. I found this out when i had lessons with a guy using an american deluxenp and when i played it i got lots of low end compared to my mexican P. Easy answer i swapped the pickups on my P to some Lindy Fralins. For a first time Jazz i would avoid both of these models. The Active deluxe edition doesn't give a very realistic jazz tone and i think the pre amps very cheap. The S-1's always sounded very flat to me and definately didn't seem to be worth the new value. My first jazz was an American Deluxe i picked off ebay for £580. I now have a Tokai Jazz which is my favourite bass i have played and that was just £360 off here. Another good few jazz's are the Fender Classic 70's reissue which is about £500 new and definately worth it, or the Squier Classic Vive which has great reviews on here.

  25. Another plus for Wunjo, i went in there and they had two p basses, a '63 and a '67. I explained i ahd no intention on buyin there and then as i didnt have 3K but i asked if i could try them both and they allowed me to. I spent 2 hours in that shop. 5 minutes on the '63 and the rest on the '67 But they were consistently polite for the whole time, and iv continued to go there first when im in london ever since. As for shops in Denmark street, theres a new one on the far right hand side. They have a decent bass stock, when i went in there last month they had a '78 jazz and a gorgeous '64 p bass. V&R's stock was very thin on the ground though
