2.
I have a used Flea Bass in our shop. Cost around £350 new. Probably the worst bass I've ever played. He's obviously just using it for the video.
+1. Also judging by that song it seems RHCP are going to really miss frusciente's bv's.
 3.
I've never heard of someone losing a gig because someone else had a better bass tone. It's rare any one besides other bassists will even comment on tone.
i was given some gigs in April because the tone i produce was a lot fatter and suited the overall sound better than someone elses, it is also technique but when you've got a john east at your disposal that does help. And you must be playing with either mute or deaf musicians because musicians i play with always make suggestions or comments on the tone. Usually the clearer it cuts through the better
 4.
False.
i didnt mean it as a factual statement, more of a joke.
 5. The US pickups have a bigger boost on the bass frequecies allowing that huge "dub" tone. That was the only difference i found when i was thinking of upgrading my mex to a US model. In the end i fitted some Lindy Fralins and its my favourite ever p bass
 6.
As for the concept of pro level being more expensive I'd suggest it's the opposite. In general many pros use simple gear and much of the boutique market is sold to amateurs.
pro's dont buy their basses they get given them
 7. the thing i find is the differences between the "mid" priced basses (3-800) and those that are £1200+ are very small. BUT, most 1200+ basses are much like the mid range basses but with every part a little bit better. When your a professional you need to have no worries about your bass, it needs to work and work consistently. It also needs to suit the need of the gig/ session. And finally it needs to allow your sound to be equal or better than other bass players. If you lose a gig because someone elses sound is better then it will almost make all the work you put into getting the chops redundant, until you get a bass that works.
 8.
Hmmm... I'm struggling to play it *at all* against a click - even slowly. I don't seem to have got that syncopated bit in my head. There's something to work on
ahh in those situations i sing the line before i play it. Somehow it helps my body "feel" it
 9.
The line is D B and A. How would that go. I suspect it's plucking technique anyway, it usually is. I can't play with a pick. I drop them. I've tried - honestly.
to build up accuracy at speed play it slow at first to a click and then speed it up until you reach the required tempo.
 10.
Some excellent answers there so thanks for that. As far as I'm concerned there are two types of bassline. A riff which I think most of us would agree are pretty easy to conjure up and the kind of intricate playing of someone like Jamerson which blows my mind with its creativity. That's not to say I dont think riffs are good I grew up on punk and that's full of repeated bar long riffs. I like the idea of completely writing your own bassline to existing songs that someone mentioned. Also does anyone know of a website or software that would play chords that I chose on a sort of loop which I could maybe work around? Even better if it had a drum effect then I could get some practice in
band in a box, bloody expensive though. Itd be better to get garageband/logic, a keyboard and learn piano which is what im going to do when iv got the time
 11. I really liked the look of that natural NYC Fodera that was on the site and then they went and gave it to Tom Kent
 12. learn your appeggios and scales if you dont already know them. Also learn lots of rhytmic patterns, you can do this just by listening to lots of different genres.
 13. il add overwater to the list. The sadowsky Will Lee jazzes are supposed to be exceptional. Also this looks like a killer bass; http://home.btconnect.com/bassworld/photos...ted%20Maple.jpg
 14. cheers for the words guys it really is a cracking instrument and i wont be at all dissapointed if i had to keep it
 15.
They used to do the odd Jazz neck if you specifically asked for one. £1500 seems pretty fair for a '79.
prices seem to be rising. Bass gallery's pre ernie stingrays have been going for over 2K recently, 79 they have now is 2.4!!!!!
 16. sorry guys and girls this ones staying with me :-D

 18. thought id give it another chance and have to admit some of the licks are quite cool. It's just not my thing. I like lots of space, where theres no unnecesary playing and lots of repetition. Maybe when i can play stuff like this i'l appreciate it more

 20. its kind of like someone did an experiment. They gave someone who has never heard music in his life a bass guitar and Hadrien is the outcome. Although i have only heard him solo'ing, would love to hear him playing in a blues trio or something just to see if he can do it.
 21.
Is there a good idiots guide to slap
watch marcus miller
 22. Gotta say guys thanks very much. The plan is that for my specialised project i was going to write a method book. From this data so far it seems the three best ways are private lessons, internet based stuff and learning by ear. So now im thinking maybe write a book that can aid teachers, almost be like a "homework" book. Probably have it as a PDF instead of a book so its more accessible to those online, possibly include video's as well. And finally an ear training section where a seperate PDF could have answers. Please keep it coming though guys, its all helping and the more the input the better the average will be
 23.
That isn't creativity. That is teaching you how to use the tools and make your job easier.
i had a student once that said everything comes from the soul.... erm! I admit to play what you feel but if you dont know what your playing you can only play by yourself. So i showed him how i would use scales over a simple song, think it was hard days night, and sure enough he then learnt the fingerboard and basic scales. And from that he found that the stuff he had "created" was based on a Mixolydian scale
