This was requested by one of my students, I thought I'd post it here for general consumption. Corrections, advice and comments are always welcome! Tom
Excellent - I've just been told my band are learning this, so the transciption is timely, thanks! Nice to see proper music rather than tab too
Silly question probably, but where do I get some lemon oil. My Rays fretboard is pretty manky!!
Most places that stock Ernie Ball strings also stock their fretboard cleaner/conditioner. My maple board 'ray was very grubby when I got it. A good rub with wire wool, then the fretboard cleaner has done wonders.
Hi all I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to post in and it's probably a very long shot but here goes............. Our band has recently got back together and we are currently rehearsing in a pretty dodgy former skittle alley at the back of a pub in a town in north Nottingham. Not a great deal wrong with that and to be fair it does the job. However, we have a couple of issues. 1: The pub is always empty and it looks like closure is pretty imminent. 2: We all work full time and travel from far and wide be there. The loading and unloading of the vehicles from both home and at the place itself is really eating into our precious rehearsal time. Two of the guys in the band are tradesman so have to unload their work gear out of the vans at home, load on the kit etc then reverse the process when they get home. I know this is an age old curse of being in a band but my question is can anybody recommend a rehearsal room in the Nottingham/North Nottingham area that can provide storage of equipment?? As I said, a bit of a long shot Many thanks
Have a word with Instrutech in Mansfield. Very helpful bunch of blokes, all in bands themsleves. They're mainly drum / guitar tutors but do have rehearsal facilities.
Well now, Simon, I blame you for me being a lot poorer but very excited. I went to Jon's workshop on Tuesday, and as you said, the singlecut 4 stock bass looked and played like a dream, and I go back to pick it up tomorrow night. No need to post pics as it is on Jon's website - www.shukerguitars.co.uk the 6th one in the stock section, in imbuya with a satin finish. Hope the family don't want to see much of me this weekend... Thanks to you and the other Shuker fans on basschat - I knew nothing about Jon and his amazing basses before joining up.
Congratulations!! Apologies for causing you to part with your cash - but it will be worth every penny!!
Has anybody tried one of these basses - it's a modern take on a jazz available from Dolphin music. Just checked one out at lunchtime and it blew me away with it's looks and tone. I also tried the primal pro which wasn't as nice but still worth thinking about for the money. Liked it so much it shall be mine tomorrow ! (the wife will be pleased)
Aren't they owned by Ashdown? I played one on Ashdown's stand at the London guitar Show, and it was pretty nice. Personally, I can't get past the headstock shape!
I'm still rather taken with the VM Jazz, although the idea of a Classic Vibe Jazz has interested me too, they also look killer! They have the Hi-Mass bridge as well, which is nice. Wish the VM Jazz had a better bridge than the same bent bit of metal I have on my P Bass. Although some people on here would have you believe it makes sod-all difference. Are the Duncan Pickups any good? And when I say 'any good', in comparison to my MIM P bass? Have read reviews where people think they are awesome, and others that ripped them straight out! The Classic Vibe Jazz and the VM Jazz are made out of different woods, apparently, but i've no idea what difference this will make to the sound?
The Classic Vibe pickups are not bad. In fact, they sound better than the MIM Jazz that I used to own. And you can buy the CV Jazz recently for under £250, so within your budget your could fit a set of Wizrds, Seymour Duncans etc.
Hand them a 9 string and watch them sh*t themselves
Hand me a 9 string and the same thing will happen I prefer to play finger style. But my current covers band plays a lot of indie numbers where the lines just seem to sound better played with a pick. I can't see why anyone would want to limit themselves to just one technique.
-
I would agree with all of the advice above, but have a look at the Squier Classic Vibe Jazz - that's great for the money, with a neck that is way ahead my old MIM Jazz. I would also have a look for an Ibanez ATK, which you might pick up just within your budget. Fantastic basses for the money.
Nice pics gents, would it be possible to put a few usernames to faces at all?
I was wondering who the fat bald bloke playing the wood n tronics in the second pic was. Then I realised it was me......
Thanks Simon. I like the look of the white jazz you mentioned. Did you see the single cut bolt-on 4 that is also in the stock section of the website? Although my birthday isn't until January, I've got some (for me) important stuff to do in June so if I really liked a stock bass I've got permission to get it early!
Is that the singlecut that's the same pickup configuration as mine (the hybrid Delanos) and 7 piece wenge/paduak neck? If so, that's an astonishingly good bass, even by Jon's standards. The neck is fantastic. I've played it a couple of times when I've been up there, and it was this bass that made me decide on the Delano hybrid system. Give Jon a call, and pop over to give it a try! Buying from stock you will get an excellent deal on price as well - cheaper than a build to a new spec.
-
Thanks for all the comments! Fletchbass - Jon built this in about ten months. Actual waiting time depends on the complexity of the build i think. If you want things like non-standard body shape, non-standard electronics, or through neck etc i think its likely to be longer!

And another thing, the dots on the fretboard should be clay dots on an early 60s Fender. Those don't look right at all to me.
Oh and Simon I couldn't get Tube Station out of my head so I've just learned it at home!
It's a long while since I've played a Ric, so I had to make the most of it and play some Bruce Foxton lines!
Thanks for coming everyone! It was pretty cool meeting some of you guys and trying your basses! And don't worry about it steve, i took enough money to cover the room and then some (the rest will go to a musical charity anyway). Oh and cheers for the pint Gazm I'll upload my photos shortly
Really enjoyed it. Some lovely basses - but i now have GAS for a Ric! Thanks for organising it Sam. Looking forward to the next one!
Please someone tell me that is faked! The first thing that sprang to mind was that I expected to see a stack-knob Jazz if it was 1960... didn't the 3 knob control get introduced circa 62/63? Then my eye was drawn to a whole variety of discrepancies and the wonderful natural wear and mojo.
I think the three knob plate was introduced during 1961, but Fender, typically, used both for a while. But a 1960 ought to be stacked knob. The neck's stamped September 60. It could be a bass which was assembled in 61, which would explain the three knob plate?
THIS IS NOT CORRECT! the Fender Jazz 24 has an active /passive pull switching...not the toggle..Believe me i have owned one..
Yes - you're right. I checked on the Fender site!
Look no further in my opinion, Fender Jazz 24
Agreed - but the OP was looking for something which will run passive. Is there a passive option on the Jazz 24? I thought it was active only?
I'm hoping to have the Lakland necked Jazz ready but have just remembered I have run out of strings. Could get some on the way or does anyone have a set they can sell me and bring to the bash ? Not too bothered what they are old / new ! just need to string it up . I do have some Elixir Nano B's but not the E, A , D, G 's....doh
I've got an old set of Elixirs lying around somewhere, which you're welcome to have!
Yes - be careful though, as I don't think the tone controls work in passive mode on all models.
PS - also, the Thumb is a fantastic bass, but is very un-Fender. If you're after a Musicman / Fender vibe, I personally would go for the $$. Mine was great, and could do a very nice traditional P sound, along with more aggressive growly stuff. Very versatile bass (I miss it!).
Shame they don't list that on their website, hard to know which ones do it... EDIT: Managed to find through the manual for all basses on their website that nearly all of them are switchable in that way... The manual lists which are and which are not...
Yes - be careful though, as I don't think the tone controls work in passive mode on all models.

I'll be in Mrs1964's people carrier, and will have room for a couple of people plus some gear. Happy to pick one or two up from the station (Sam, I'll be coming through Hucknall if you want to avoid the tram?) After several basses in and some out in recent weeks, I think I'll bring the Shuker, Thumb, Stingray and fretless Jazz. Probably won't bring the re-issue P unless anyone particularly wants to try one? And I'm looking forward to having a go on my old $$!
Do most Warwicks switch between P/A? I had no idea the Thumb could ever do that at all... Where's the switch?
Its a push pull volume knob. Pull it up and its passive - same on the $$
