2.
Coming from the world of guitar where almost every instrument with more than 1 pickup (except the Godin Radiator: each PU has it's own volume) has pickup selection on a switch, I've realised that basses almost never do. Bass players have a reputation for being innovative and not bound to tradition, so this omission surprises me. Is there a good reason or is that just 'how it is'? A simple 3 way selector seems an obvious addition to a jazz bass.
With a Jazz bass you have a separate volume control for each pickup. That means you have the option of soloing either pickup if you wish, or having both on full. But you can also blend the pickups by, eg having the front pickup on full volume, and the back pickup half volume. That's actually a lot more versatile than a three way switch. Other basses will have a blend control, where you can dial in different amounts of each pickup. Again, more versatile than a three way switch. FWIW Rickenbackers have a three way switch, and separate volume controls - which I've never quite understood!
  3.
I think the two models are maybe dif years, the woods seem ever so slightly diff. The 5 string glides, whereas the 4 is very stiff and tight for me. I just find the 4 string harder to play than the 5, even tho I've never used a 5 string before. Also hankering for something slightly diff in the 4 string dept, thought having the family of 4 and 5 string versions would work, but looking to move on, again!! The GroovyPlucker
As per the posts above, I used to own this before selling it to Budget Bassist. I found it a dream to play, and regretted selling it. I think Warwick four strings are very different to the five strings. The fivers have a very narrow string spacing and play differently to the four strings, which may be why Mr Plucker isn't getting on with it (and very honest of him to say so in his sale thread!). If you like modern Warwick four string necks, you'll not go wrong with this one IMO. In fact, I'm half tempted to offer something as a trade myself - just not sure what!
  4. Depends on the Squier and the Fender! I've got a classic vibe Jazz which is much nicer than the Mexican Jazz I used to own, and not far behind my MIA Jazz. On the other hand, I used to own a Mexican Precision, which had one of the nicest Fender necks I've come across. The current crop of Squiers are certainly consistantly good, and the Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified stuff will give most Fenders a run for their money IMO.
  5.
Two that my band do are 'Rocks Off', Primal Scream.
Great song, but its called "Rocks" - Our guitarist always calls it "Rocks Off", and I've become completely anal about it! Sorry
  6.
Are they better than a MIM fender jazz?
I've owned both, and I would say the Classic vibe is much nicer than than the MIM Jazz. Better bridge, better pickups, nicer finish, and fantastic necks. IMO, of course!
  7. From my covers band, I'd nominate: She Sells Sanctuary Ever Fallen in Love Gimme all you Lovin Monster Anarchy in the UK All dead easy (the bass parts at least!) but all great songs
  8. That looks familiar - did you trade this with Budget Bassist? If so, its my old $$. Cracking bass - have a bump on me!
  9.
Couldn't wait until Saturday, so I went to see it this this morning. Looked "as new", neck felt lovely ( a bit shorter than the G&L) and, well, it's Christmas. So I bought it. My other half hasn't been home yet today, and I've got 3 hours to think up a justifiable reason for buying it. Steve
Congrats - looks a nice bass at a good price. And +1 to the black pickguard suggestions!!
  10. Just traded my Warwick thumb for Col's MIA Jazz. Great bloke to deal with - and a cracking bass. Cheers mate!
  11.
Cheers buddy, I those and didn't think they looked right.
I've bought decals from here before, but they don't seem to have them on the site any more. Might be worth giving them a call? http://www.axesrus.com/

    Sold

Blimey - that's nice! Any trades that you might be interested in?
  13.
No but I want your thumb!
I'm still tempted by your Jazz - its just a string less than ideal!
  14.
Have a look at Delano pickups... mmmmmmmm
+1
  15. Wow - that's stunning! +1 on the mail forwarding services. And also remember that import taxes will bump up the price as well.
  16.
Any new basses built this year?
I'll probably bring my Shuker - it went to the nottingham bash earlier this year, but its new to Yorkshire!
  17. Shame you're not looking for trades - this is exactly what I want to trade my Thumb 4 string for!
  18. Final Bump - nobody got a five string they want to trade?!
  19. Are these 34" scale length or 30"?
  20.
the polically correct thing to say is that it's horses for courses.... but bass played with a pick has to be doing something amazing before i'm interested. For some things it sounds great but something about how your hand moves means it gets into a steady up down rhythm, much like guitar players. Thats good for some types of music but for me the interesting bits of a bass line are where rhythmically its being pushed and pulled about.
I understand where you're coming from here, but I think there are loads of examples of great lines played with a pick which don't fall into the trap of a steady up and down rhythm (if that is a trap!). Good examples: Down in the Tube Station - Bruce Foxton Hangin Around (or pretty much anything by the Stranglers) - JJ Burnel Somebody told Me (the chorus bit, which sounds almost like slap/pop) - the guy from the Killers whose name escapes me! Sweet Child o mine (the bass line under the intro) - Duff Come Together (and lots of other Beatles lines) - McCartney Personally I play about 50% pick and 50% fingerstyle. It really depends which is easier and/or more appropriate tone wise for the song.
  21. I should be able to make this, and will be giving Luke a lift, so: 1. Born 2B Mild 2. yorks5stringer 3. Al Heeley 4. Wonderhorse 5. simon1964 6. Tait
  22. Fantastic - that looks a real stunner!
  23.
I realise the 'tone suck' issue is very minor, it's very noticeable to me through a clean hi-fi rig or through headphones even though nobody else in the audience would notice the difference anyway. But if I'm investing in a quality bass and an amp, why introduce degradation into the signal (however slight) when there are better alternatives available for around the same price?
I wouldn't disagree with that, and I have got rid of a rack tuner precisely because of its negative effect on the tone. But like Phaedrus, I've never had any problem with the Korg DT10
  24.
Therefore it ain't.
+1. The Fender Corona backplate isn't right for the 70s logo on the headstock. And the backplate is a micro-tilt as previously posted - but that's not a micro-tilt body (you can see solid wood through the hole). Plus no serial number. Not for me!
  25.
..have seen one of these for sale - nice looker, but with EMG replacement p/ups - haven't had chance to play it yet, but anyone with any thoughts on what EMG's offer? More thump I'm guessing, but any experiences of EMG's etc appreciated and how they might perform within a P body.. Ta
I've got EMGs in my 70s reissue Precision. Personally I like them. They retain the low end thump of a Precision, but with a touch more definition and punch IMO. Some say they sound more modern / hifi compared with vintage Precision pickups and there is some truth to that. But They still sound like a Precision to me.
