1.
In theory it's the latter - 250 watts into 6 cones. However it's not the watts that count, it's the sensitivity of the speaker boxes or speakers in the combo. The Minimark 2x6 combo has a claimed sensitivity of 101dB per 1 watt input. If you add that to the 604 cab which has a claimed sensitivity of 100dB then IN THEORY you should get 103+. (I've forgotten how to do the fiddly maths to give an exact theoretical result - it could be 103.1 or 103 .2, something like that ). Meanwhile the LMK into the 604 is set at the 100dB sensitivity of the 604. The extra 50watts won't make up the 3dB difference. Balcro.
Thanks! All being well this question will soon just be of academic interest though, as I hope to be getting my hands on a Barefaced Compact shortly. But it's all good to know...
2.
Me too. It's there all right.
Got it. Thanks.
3. My 1024x, which I've owned for about a year now, is the best instrument I've ever played. Love the sounds, love the feel, love the look, love the price! Just a great instrument. Except the shape of the headstock, which I've always thought somehow a little lame...
4. Forgive my blondeness, but I can't seem to find the mobile version of the site. I'm a borderline technophobe, and New to owning a smartphone, so am fully prepared to learn that the solution is blindingly, embarrassingly obvious, but I can't seem to find it. Where and for what should I be searching? Help appreciated. Thanks.
5.
Of course you could just get your bandmates to turn down a bit, thus giving you more headroom with either rig.
Ha ha! As if....
6.
There's a Compact in the For Sale section. I reckon that would cover 2 Markbass cabs.
I know. I've been in touch. Sadly there isn't the necessary balance in my bank account though! If someone would buy my second 604 I'd be there like a shot... Thanks anwyay.
7. Thanks for your reply. i've tried both in gigging situations, and to be honest i'm not sure about the difference. There are so many variables of acoustic and placement and PA etc etc from one gig to the next - I used to find that when playing with my full rig anyway (doesn't everyone?) - so I just wanted to know which in theory should serve me better...
8. I've recently had to sell one of my two markBass cabs - the plan is to replace with Barefaced in due course, but money's very tight at the moment, so for now I'm trying to make do with a reduced rig. Simple question then - which combination, in theory, should give me more volume when gigging? - 300w (@ 8 Ohms) LMK amp through a single New York 604 cab (8 ohm), or my MiniMark combo, which delivers 250w if I use it with the NY604 as an extension? So 300w driving four 6" cones, or 250w driving six 6" cones? Love to hear the BC wisdom.... Thanks
9.
I've always hankered after a T-40 (bass not tank) and I got one on eBay a while back. It was in a sorry state (but cheap) and I moved it on as I couldn't get on with all the cosmetic damage. This one looks lovely and they are by all accounts great basses. I have too many already and can't afford or justify another (unlucky 13?). Bump for a great looking example of the breed. Peter
Thanks Peter. Assuming it sells, I'll be truly sorry to see it go.
10. Now SOLD Breaks my heart, but I need to let this beautiful beast go. £425 gets you this lovely 1980 T40 - including the original hard case (as pictured). Sorry, but no trades. hard cash needed (or online transfer, of whatever. Money, anyway). Bought last year from the ever dependable Old Horse Murphy - because I just couldn't resist it - when my finances were in (marginally) better shape - it's a luxury I can no longer afford. I think it just looks so great. But there are other, more substantial reasons for liking it too. It's beautifully made. It's in perfect working order. It weighs 9lbs 4oz (so it's no monster in that sense). It's strung with DR sunbeams. I could go on. But you don't need me to do you? It's a great instrument. Plenty of info out there if you need to know more about the remarkable tonal flexibility of the T40 (try ). £425 cash on collection from York. Or I'll courier it if necessary - P&P not included though. Let me know if you're interested... Cheers.
11. Have a bump on me. Lovely looking instrument. I'd snap your hand off at that price if I had £200 spare right now...
12. I'm just in the process of acquiring a BF compact Gen2, and if I haven't sold it before the BF arrives, am planning to try pairing it with my one remaining MarkBass NY 604. In reality, I'm expecting to find the BF will be more than adequate for most, if not all, my gigs. But, going purely on descriptions for now, I think they might make quite a complementary pair.
13. One of these is now sold. I'll take £400 for the other if collected from me...
14. OK. Well, if my sale goes through I'll get straight back to you.
15. Might be interested in this - I have a potential buyer for my LMK - if that goes through I'll be in the market for a new head... Always fancied giving an 800 a try, but maybe this would do it for me?
16.
Here's how little I know about T40s - I don't know whether mine is a toaster or a blade - what am I looking for? I have a Sansamp already, and yes, it makes most things sound better - but I'm hoping to find an instrument that I can get sounds I like out of without having to depend on the externals...
OK, so I now know that I have toaster pups....
17.
Hi. Just some thoughts on your T-40. The best strings I have found, so far, are Rotosound RB45 - up to those, I found Picato were quite good. I have bought Forty's with flats on and the range of tones is more limited. Is yours a Toaster or a Blade? As with most electric instruments, the sound you hear is also down to the amp. I have 3 set-ups and they each offer tonal differences - maybe the mix of a T-40 and your amp, is not giving you what you are looking for. They really come to life with a Sansamp or in my case a BD21 Behringer. I don't always use it but in some situations, it helps "colour" the sound/tones. A BD21 can be picked up for pennies on e.bay - may be worth giving that a go. Cheers. 18. Thanks for all the suggestions. I've always liked the look of Sandbergs (bit of a sucker for those relic jobs too - but I know they're not to everyone's taste), but I've yet to try playing one. As with the G&Ls. I prefer more classic styling aesthetically, so not likely to go for the ACG type options - but i try to keep an open mind. Maybe if I tried one and loved it..?
19. I've owned a number of instruments over the years (though not that many when compared to some BCer's!), and currently have a Yamaha BB1024x as my main instrument. I love it, but naturally it has it's limitations tonally, so I recently purchased a Peavey T40 in the hope that it would offer me some different sounds... I was particularly attracted by it's apparent tonal versatility and capacity to mimic various classic bass sounds (Rick, Musicman, T Bird etc - see YouTube for many and various demonstrations..), especially the humbucking ones that my Yamaha doesn't do (of course). It does seem to be able to make quite a variety of sounds, but I must say I've yet to fall in love with any of them... Maybe I just need to experiment more, and I might change the strings too (currently has La Bella flats on it). Anyway, it got me thinking about what other single bass I might consider trading my current ones in for... I'd welcome suggestions. I'd be looking for something that would offer great P bass and PJ sounds (like my passive Yamaha), but perhaps something with the option of active circuitry too, so I could get some more "modern", full, fat tones that would work with soul/pop music as well as rock and vintage/funky tones. My musical tastes and interests are quite varied - I currently play in a kind of urban soul/dub-influenced pop band, but also love vintage funk and disco, and have been in many much heavier rock and blues bands so my influences range pretty much across the spectrum from Lemmy to Nate Watts! I know there always have to be compromises along the line, and that (probably) no single instrument can do everything - but I suspect there must be some basses out there that would do a better job than my current set up. If I sold both of mine I'd have something in the region of £1000 to spend, so that's my upper limit really. Might possibly stretch a little further if a very attractive option turned up though... Suggestions would be very welcome. Happy New Year one and all!
20.
Gil Scott Heron & Brian Jackson's (pictured with/at TONTO on the cover) 1980 with Jackson at the controls of TONTO and Malcolm Cecil co-producing. Classic album.
Wow! Thanks so much for posting this. I'd never heard of this before, despite being something of a recent convert to Gil... Great Christmas present!
