  1. Yamaha RBX4-A2 Aircraft Grey/White First gen' Squier VMJ, they were all natural maple back when I were'a lad. Spector Q4, granite. Westfield B1000, in pink and maple Everything else comes and goes and I can imagine this peasants quartet flicking the V's as the new pretenders exit the building. Luckily, my rabbit hole wasn't too deep when it came to spendy stuff, Stingray, US Fender, Aria SB etc didn't stay long.... .....more like those family relatives that stay at Christmas....great company at first, but I soon realise, I've heard it before and can't wait to see the back of them😉
  2. In 1992, I bought a well running, short ticket, rough as a badgers backside on the body '78 MK2 RS2000 for £200 in glorious white...dynamically it was still as woeful as when it was new, felt like a tad quicker 1600E only not as comfy. ...although this post brings nothing to the bass party, it maybe helps your case😉
  3. As the title really... Std is VVT, I'd like VBT With coils this close, can't see the point of VVT, it's not a jazz with 4 or so inches between the coils. many thanks guys😎
  4. Yet the MB4 Snide'rays seem consistently ok weight wise. But one mans heavy is another mans reassuringly substantial😉
  5. Interesting thread, it's made me realise I've not had as many basses as I thought, so "tries hard but must do better"😉 .....and strangely, I've never owned an Ibanez....
  6. Off course not, a bass is 20% about the material item, 80% the romance factor.
  7. A most apt mnemonic.... I Dont Particularly Like Modes A Lot Just been re-re-re-revisiting modes, but more for noodling over chords, not as scales, and found myself rusty with the names again, having a short term memory like a gold fish isn't helping. Maybe of use to someone learning too. 😎
  8. I've been using this technique since I started playing...unfortunately not by design 😉 I'd listen to Victor talking about potato pealings, great oratory.
  9. But at least it's not hollow like an acoustic guitar and instantly gravitate to the sound 'ole😉
  10. Forgot about this gem'ette when Gazza discovered disco balls at Studio 54. Not a rockstar but intriguing. And added Pinolicious bassness ....with an easy 6 fret finger span
  11. Just the merest lick of silicon grease makes them feel much smoother 😎
  12. I wouldn't p**s about on Marketplace for Squiers, which I like myself but, are now poor value for money TBH. .....most sellers haven't a clue what they are selling or, very importantly how to store and maintain a bass....which means not in the shed, by a radiator etc and not adjusting a truss rod with an almost fitting IKEA allen key etc. Just buy a base (bass😊) model Harley Benton and enjoy. I work on quite a few guitars and have yet to have a Harley Benton runt pass thru my hands. The HB fit, finish, playability and sounds are in truth all one really needs, the rest is, if we were honest, vanity stuff. Yes, they may/will need a set up - but so does a Fender US Custom Shop - but that's it, no unwanted surprises and he gets the colour he wants with decent strings too, amazingly. 😎
  13. Roots and octave, check Catchy hook, check Singalong'ability, check Head bobbolicious, check And great fun to play check Chicken Dinner🍗
  14. Not wishing to sound the horn of doom and gloom.....but I will😊I've found the market for bass guitars, strats, teles and amps to be fairly sticky and price sensitive at the moment, and with current jitters n worries can't see it changing for the foreseeable future. This slow market trend is even more so at the romantic end of the market, by which means the old/vintage/classic, I've been moving my stuff on. Same with the classic car market, behind the hype of a few hero cars (some of which didn't complete on sales) there's a lot of stock going to suction, and a lot of pills being swallowed. The bread n butter sector is interesting too but for other reasons, I'll leave it there on that.
  15. So was Bernard Edwards, but he didn't sound too shabby😉
  16. I've been down the flats rabbit hole a few times.....just turn the treble down, close that tone control...for some though there is a tactile difference. 😉
  17. Spot on, it's almost like low frequency selective hearing😊
  18. I've seen some very worn frets, so much so the profile looks like Nessie's back, and also on the same well used exact same model, minimal wear....some players really do have fingers like Mole Grips. A well dressed fret, with good radius on the crown simply makes it easier and less tiring to play, and string bending is a breeze.. ...but like anything, it will still perform with worn/flattended frets, why make it tougher though?
  19. These Yamaha RBX4-A2 A.I.R. Body are ridiculously light, the title weighs more😉 they do a 5 string too. Whenever a bass player picks mine up you can see it almost launch into the air as the person picking it up, is poised to expect something far heavier.
  20. On the older stuff when records were pressed, if the bass wasn't compressed/lessened it could make the needle jump/skate. ....so I was told by an older gentleman with round wire framed glasses, lab coat and plummy voice whom looked like Dr Steele in The Young Doctors.....tapes wouldn't suffer like this.
  21. 😀Probably a while thread there....pork pies seem popular again up my way at the moment, now the Peaky Blinders fad has passed. 😉
