2. Five pages and no mention of Dave Meros? For me, the ultimate Ric growl.
 3.
It's claimed that "....................many bass players who want to be more "forward" in the mix (including smaller bands such as power trios) prefer the Jazz Bass."
Maybe.... but when that particular marketing nugget was coined, what exactly did a three-piece consist of? What amps and (more importantly) speakers were they using? Does that statement still apply to the same degree today, with all the changes/improvements in instruments and amplification? Just wondering out loud...
 4. I am embarrassed to admit that I have never played a Ray or one of its derivatives/copies I do, however, have a pretty strong idea in my head of how I think they sound. I find them limited and unsubtle, but in a good way, if that makes sense? "That" sound is immense - powerful but somehow weedy at the same time.... how does that work?!? Loads of treble and loads of bass, but scooped. On the other hand, some players make them a phat mid-fest. I really have no idea what I am trying to say here.
 5.
It's the highs that shout Stingray at me, whenever I hear the piercing clacky, almost noisy treble that sounds separated from the low end. To me that is the Ray sound.
Like this? I think it might have been a Cutlass though... I've often wondered what happened to Tony Wall. Maybe a bit limited technically, but he had a great sound and played some great basslines for that band... He was good in their predecessors (sp?) too - The Reluctant Stereotypes.
 6.
Can someone please build me one of these cabinets?!?!
You must want it for a coffee table. You can't possibly need any more cabinets!!
 7.
Ha! No... I was using the TC RH450 with the Compact which, in retrospect, was a head I hated.
Ah! So it wasn't you who said "Used the RH450 at a rehearsal tonight with a single HS210. Normally I'd take the Scout... HOLY SMOKE! It was great. Best rehearsal tone I've ever had. Fat, even, punchy.. all the usual cliches... and best of all, lots of punch on the low E below the 5th." then?
 8.
But I'm wondering if the M-pulse 600 would be too powerful for the scout cab to cope.
As a single cab it would be running at 8 ohms wouldn't it? It is rated at 300watts, which would be about what the head would put out.... So I guess that purely from a ratings POV it should be able to handle it...but it's not as though you'll be running the head flat out is it? How big is the room for the annual sheep-shearers' ball?
 9.
Conan, that's a great post - I've been looking to learn some of the basics of the technique, if for nothing more than giving me something else to work on. That video was superb. Would you also be able to advise on any EQ changes you'd recommend to nail the tone? Assume big tone/treble?
I believe Scott is a member on here (or at least was a few months ago). His videos are really good! As far as EQ goes, a lot depends on personal preferences. I actually use pretty much the same tone for slap as I do for fingerstyle - but then again I use a pretty bright tone to start with. Newish strings help IMO. There is certainly no need to whack up the top end, and it can end up sounding harsh if you overdo it. Don't shy away from the mids either - for some reason a lot of slap players think you need to cut the mid for slapping. If you like that tone then fine, but I actually like a bit of midrange to give definition. The scooped sound is fine when practicing by yourself, but it gets lost in a band scenario. Plus, it obviously works for some players, as this gorgeous line demonstrates...
 10. Rosewood neck or rosewood fingerboard?
 11. They vary a LOT! Some are very good though and they are a useful resource. Some are clearly put up by bedroom players who want to show the world how talented they are. These are usually the ones to avoid! However, the point about a total beginner (13 years old or otherwise) is a good one. How would a total beginner know which was a good lesson series and which wasn't? It is difficult to pitch at beginners without seeming totally patronising...

Sounds like it may be high time for a ToonBash! Is That a TC Blacksmith I see perched atop your babies there Roger? Awesome stack!! Have you forgotten what they sound like already?
 13.
Does anyone ever read Amazon reviews?
Absolutely! In this particular case - that was the whole point!
 14.
Different animals tho.
What? No Ethiopian fine brown long hair sheep?
 15. I didn't realise anyone would take this thread seriously!
 16. I simply had to post this here. Skank, have you been reviewing items on Amazon? Just wonderful. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultrasone-EDITION-10-Headphones/dp/B004ED7GQK/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1342182601&sr=1-5
 17. Like the black plate! Good luck with the sale. Great basses these.
 18. Interesting! Not particularly well written though, and some of the comments are extremely subjective - for example: "Jaco Pastorius was unquestionably the greatest musician to ever wield a bass guitar." Oh really? Thanks for sharing though!
 19.
By the way, tabs for Steely Dan's My Old School would be much appreciated...dreading tackling that one for some reason!
That sounds like a lot of work for not much return... On the Dan thing, try PMing Pete Academy on here - he is master of all things Steely...
 20.
Off to learn Get The Funk Out! Cheers Conan & Higgie!
Learning it is one thing... playing it in a freezing cold rehearsal studio is another - extremely tiring track to play!!
 21.
Christ, you got that right! Can be useful though, as examples of exactly how not to do it!
True - but there are some good ones too. The guy who calls himself something like TJH3113 is awesome when it comes to Rush stuff, and when I was struggling a bit with Extreme's "Get the funk out" earlier this year I found the clip by Higgie (member on here) to be really useful!! But you have to wade through a lot of dross to find the quality! And none of it was any good for helping me learn Dream Theater's "Pull me under". That is just a silly bass line anyway!
 22.
As much as I love EW&F..... that was atrocious!!
I know! How can someone who has played some of the best disco/funk/soul basslines ever, play such unmitigated garbage live?
 23. As above. Listen to it a few times without picking up a bass. Then play along with it by ear, enough time that it is commited to my memory. Any awkward bits that I can't quite work out, I might resort to youtube - but there are a lot of poor covers on there!

 25.
Alan Thompson. He done a guest lecture at my college. Thoroughly nice guy and was brilliant on both bass and guitar.
Danny Thompson plays upright on the majority of John Martyn's albums. Wasn't AT mainly used live instead of John Giblin?
