1.
This is insane. I'm going to put this elsewhere so if you get some daft emails be patient. It's criminal this amazing piece of kit hasn't gone at this price.
Good call - stick it on the Ashdown Facebook page maybe?
2.
And what about those new fangled "Speakon" connectors. I can't believe that one of those will ever sound as good as a jack plug.
Damn straight
3. I'd love it if you could bridge the power amps It's an insane price, most of the 500s go for 250 so this is crazy good value!
4. Do you actually NEED more power?
5. Volume is a funny thing - the voicing of the amp has a big effect, plus the position of the volume control between two completely different amps means nothing. Ashdown told me that the DP200H was no louder than the CTM, I haven't got any evidence other than an email. But I always thought the CTM was pretty much bang on right. I also find Ashdown amps sound better through non-Ashdown cabs. Again the voicing of both amp and cab leans heavily towards warmth rather than sparkle - with a different cab (in my case Barefaced Super Compact) the ABM is plenty loud enough
6.
I have found this to be the case with every amp I've used that had a valve power stage. It's more alive, somehow.
Yup. Remind me why I am selling mine..... :/
7.
On those amps the DI probably goes thru the transformer? Anyway, I think the ABM 500 is already very "boomy" and "wooly", no idea about how that preamp would work with a tube power stage. I have the 427 myself but it's got a Bassman-style tube preamp. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bought it. The power stage makes a big difference, though. Expecially on dynamics. You dig into the strings, the amp gives it back - more than on SS amps.
I think the BTA power stage has more bite and zing to it actually, the ABM stage feels like it has a softer transient response. The BTA is the best bass amp I've ever used, just damn big and heavy...!
8.
As with all Ashdown gear ive used its never seems quite as loud as the ratings suggest (the comparison I always use with the ‘quiet ashdown’ issue is my Hartke HA2500 will eat my ABM 500 alive for volume) but the tone is sweet and lovely. I do need to get mine serviced at some point as I just stuck the new power valves in without having them biased but so little is known about the amp and Ashdown seem hard to get hold of for advice on Approved Repairers.
Ashdown told me they stopped making the DP200 because it turned out to be no louder than the CTM100... As for getting it serviced, why not get Ashdown to actually do it...?
9.
It isn't the AB vs D power stage that's the big difference, it's the preamps. My first choices of lightweight amps which sound more like the ABM would be the MB Fusion, TH500 and (late) Streamliner.
I concur, especially the GK MB Fusion
10. Bought an Ashdown CTM15 from Liam, he even delivered it on his was to a bass-related purchase. Fantastic, cheers dude! Enjoy the Six10
11.
We dropped Brown Sugar from the set after an unfortunate contretemps when we played Diane Abbot's birthday party. After discussion we decided to go with Honky Tonk Women instead but rewrote the lyrics to avoid giving offence. I met a gin soaked bar room queen in Memphis I put her in a cab and sent her home Paid her tab and went back to my hotel And read the Gideon bible all alone It's the Honky Tonk Women Who would most benefit from gender identity counselling I met a divorcee in New York city Exploiting her vulnerable status ran entirely counter to the personal guidelines I have set for myself The lady then she covered me with roses "I hope these flowers came from a fair trade partner who pays their workers a living wage and respects diversity standards which would meet with the approval of enlightened progressives everywhere" I said, knocking back my glass of herbal tea.
I want our singerist to sing these lyrics next gig
12.
I often dep in a steel panther tribute act. Playing brown sugar wouldn't be the worst thing I ever played.
Awesome. I've only ever been able to squeeze Party All Day into our set, and that was because it was requested by the groom. I bet Asian Hooker is great fun to play!
13. Can't believe this hasn't gone yet, such a versatile and good quality amp for a modest outlay IMO
14. Donald very kindly assisted Davie in my "get a bass amp from Cumbernauld to Surrey" project by providing the transport and company for Davie. Top man, thank you very much!
15. Davie helped get an amp from Cumbernauld to me in Surrey, by going out of his way to meet the seller and pay on my behalf; he even found packaging for it. Brilliant, very much above and beyond the call of duty and hugely appreciated!
16. So the amp arrived today. Many thanks and big kudos to kodiakblair and Donnyboy, you guys are the perfect example what makes this community great
17.
FWIW, I spent many years in what was, to me, a micro-head wilderness (RH450 included). I eventually realised: whenever I used a head with a lump of iron in it, I didn't have to turn it up so loud for it to feel 'right' in context. Controversial (or bunkum) maybe, but I can only speak as I find.
Apart from the GK MB Fusion I have now come to the same conclusion
18. Edit, ignore that, having a natter with Phil about this
19. Now that is a fine looking rig, bet it sounds pretty sweet too
20. You guys are legends, thank you very much
21. Ashdown CTM100 is worth a look - I used one with one or two BF Super Compacts last year and it was ace. There are only two amps I've regretted selling and this is one of them!
22.
God, I love BassChat! What a community. Anyway, enough of the group hug, what have you snagged Merton?
Yeah it's great isn't it! I've snaffled an Eden WT400 at a price too good to miss (I think)
23.
With me meeting Chas at 10am I told Donny to have a lie-in,then thought it's wasted chance to meet up. Course Donny's offline now. What an arse I am at times.
D'oh!
24. Very kind of you thanks! I've let Davie know in case it is a cunning plan which works for him
