1. i don't like sunburst. i don't like flamed maple tops. but that is one awesome looking bass.
  2. wow... i don't think that pick-guard would work with anything else, or even a bongo in different colours, but it just looks great there! i quite like bongo's even though i think they're hideous, i think they're so ugly they're cool! kind of like a fiat multipla, so ugly that you want one.
  3. man, if i sell my guitar i'll have this off you! afraid i can't afford it until my guitars gone though :/
  4.
Yep, see if you can see 'em
tinman, i've just realised thats one massive face. you have the two very dark bits either side of the neck pickup, they're the eyes. above and between the eyes there is dark wood thats eyebrows and nose. beneath the bridge is dark wook which is the mouth. to the sides and between the nose and mouth there are two bits of dark wood that curl upwards, thats one of those moustaches that curls off the side of your face.
  5.
you beat me to it. i'm trying to 'learn' perfect pitch at the moment. some people say it can't be done, others disagree. i have a friend with synaesthesia. he sees shapes when tasting. he makes wonderful beer.
normally i'd say i don't think it can be done, but this week i've been practicing with a blind keyboard player, and one thing i thought was really interesting was if you hit a note anywhere on his keyboard, he could hit the exact same note first attempt. also, when me and my guitar teacher randomly started jamming, he just joined in in the right key - we hadn't said what key we were playing in, he couldn't see where on the fretboard we were playing, he just knew. i think its really amazing how he can do that, i always thought being pitch perfect was impossible, but it's kind of made me wonder. even if it is possible, i think its unbelievably difficult and i don't think just anyone could do it, you'd have to have excellent ears and really really know the sounds well, like a blind person would.

    Free VSTs
Or sometimes there is C/Programme files/Steinberg/VST's,or C/programmes/VST'S, and then you have to set the path within Acid Pro to scan, Pointing towards that folder. You had to do that with the older versions of Acid. The newer versions have a VST folder within the Sony/Acid folder. I do remember last year some time that there was a post started for free VST'S.Quite a few links within that. Garry
link to that thread here - Excellent free VST's i started one for free VSTi's last year, cos i love them too. link to that thread here - decent free VSTi's? now we have no excuse not to pin this thread three thread's worth already here
  7. hey basically, my band has decided what we really need now is a good frontman. we're aged between 14 and 17, so anyone really around that sort of age, i'd say sort of 14-19 years old are what we're looking for ideally. long shot, i guess, but no harm in asking. we do a mixture of covers and originals, the covers being mainly well known rock songs (livin on a prayer, sweet child of mine, etc) and some less well known songs that are just enjoyable to play (playmate of the year by zebrahead for example). the originals range anywhere between heavy rock and pop punk, really. oh, and we're based in Nottingham, in mansfield. Here's a link to our myspace that has 3 of our originals up, have a listen! cheers, Tait.

    Free VSTs

i don't suppose there's any chance of having this pinned so people can post links to free VSTs they like and its always just there for reference? i love free VSTs, take for example my favourite in the link the OP posted, the cosmogirl II. its a great sound, lots of fun to play with, but i wouldn't want to pay for it because i'm never really gonna use it in an actual song.
  9.
Hi there i currently have a squire p bass but thankfully not a standard one i have had the thing chocked over recently and it was given a clean bill of health i also about a year about a year ago put seymour dunkun hot pick ups in her so she really sings rather nicely but i am looking for a second bass and want something that doesnt sound the same as the p bass now looking at the sr300 it would appear on paper to be nothing like the squire at all humbuckers in stead of single ciol three tone pots and so on it really does look to be a very nice piece of equipment now i am going to do my best to try one out but i would love to hear what anyone has to say on them good or bad just to give me an idea of what im letting my self in for as i think im going to have to travel a fair distance to have a go on one. Markus
its an excellent bass. i've used the SR500 for ages, so i might be a little biased, but a bass player i know uses the SR300 and its a great piece of kit, well worth looking at. try one out, see what you think. and, just because i'm pedantic, technically the precision bass has a humbucker pickup, i think because there are 2 coils that cancel hum.
  10.
Yep, see if you can see 'em
i can see something that resembles a goldfish mid-yawn. oh, and Ki0gon, in the control cavity cover thingy of your bass, there's the profile of a koala's face.
  11. i'd say quarter pounders and BADASS II if you're after a solid, reliable rock bass. the gotoh is supposed to be a nice bridge too, but for me its always been about the badass.
  12.
DOH! Now you tell me I\'ve just ordered one to try exactly that! Edit: Whoops - just looked - mines a Hipshot & it looks even wider than a BA
its not to do with width of the BADASS, its just BADASSs are very long, they usually go down very close to the edge of the bass, so there isn\'t enough room for an ashtray. depending on the model, i think your hipshot should be ok with an ashtray, but i can\'t say i\'ve ever tried it, and i don\'t know exactly which bridge you\'re using, so its a very big \"i think\". EDIT: i just google image\'d badass II bridge and found this picture - i think that shows what i mean pretty well. EDIT 2: oh, and FWIW, i usually use BADASS bridges on my fender style basses (not that i have any atm) and theres one on my taitycaster. i think they do make a fair difference, but the main reason i use them is because they look really cool IMO. i wouldn't pay the same price for a gotoh that does a very similar job.
  13.
Discuss
haha! thats genuinely the first time i've ever thought anything SG shaped actually looks good!
  14.
I mmight've missed any comments somewhere in the forray up there but does anyone know how this gig went? (just out of interest, i dont wanna slag it off or pas judgement or anything, i just wanna know if she pulled it off in the end)
i just checked her facebook profile to see if she said anything about how it went. they raised £85. she didn't say if the overall gig went well or not, and someone else has posted on her wall asking if she managed to get any drums last night but she didn't appear to reply. maybe sam will know more..?
  15.
I do find it amusing that people buy so-called 'road worn' brand new basses. Can't figure that one out at all.
erm... because some people like the way they look? i for one think a relic'd fender (provided it looks real, i can't stand badly done relics) is just cool, its that simple. in fact, i tend to prefer most basses with a little mojo tbh, the whole shiny new thing doesnt do it for me. not that i'd ever damage an instrument on purpose just for its asthetics. i find it amusing anyone would buy a musicman bongo. can't figure that one out at all.
  16.
Yep it is I've known this girl all my life (literally), she's nice and this is her first time organising a gig so she deserves to be cut some slack, and in fairness she has had some trouble with bands dopping out etc, not sure what the deal about it being over 18's only is though, she asked me if i could get something together for it and for it to be "family friendly".... She only asked me a couple of weeks ago though, obviously i couldn't get anything together in that short a time frame. You can trust her to get someone to pick the kit up though, she's trustworthy.
she seemed like a nice enough person tbh and if you'll notice, i've barely even replied to the thread since i wrote it when i first found all this stuff out and i was a bit pissed off, and personally i think a few of the replies, as well as my OP if i'm honest, we're a bit harsh on her. thats also the reason i didn't mention where the gig was at, i know there are a few nottingham based basschatters and i didn't want people to go along or blame the venue or even blame her, i'm sure its as much about bad luck as it is about bad organising really. its not about her at all, its more just how badly the gig has been organised that i'm moaning about, and the fact she wanted us to play even though we're all under 18, and the whole drumkit thing. i don't know about the family friendly thing since its an 18+ gig, that doesn't really sound family friendly at all. it didn't sound like it was her first gig, because i'm sure she's said the place have moaned at her for having under 18s play there before. either way, its still a badly organised gig that i ended up annoyed about. also - i didn't know it was a charity gig if i'm honest, but i can't see how that makes a difference anyway. we we're getting paid, but i didn't mention that because she told me before we agreed to play we weren't getting paid. i never once thought she was trying to rip anyone off, like i said she seemed a nice enough person, and i only found out about her gig because she was a friend of a very close friend of mine. i don't think she was even using us for the drums really, maybe that was why she wanted us to play even after she found out we were under 18, but we had sorted out the fact we were playing at least a week before she asked if we could bring drums - its not like she said "you can play if you can bring drums". i just think its amazing about how unorganised the gig was, and how none of the other bands can bring drums. we don't have a problem with lending the drum kit out - we've done it before, and if my dad hadn't had a gig that night, we'd have lent it out again at this gig - but we simply couldn't bring the kit, and i didn't want to trust a total stranger with our drumkit. she also definatly knew we shouldnt be playing and still insisted that we should. i forgot in the OP that i i dod ask her if it was worth calling the venue and checking, but she said that would just make it worse (i know a couple of people posted in the thread i should have called - it did go through my mind). its not even like we are all 18 except me, in which case i'd have probably gone for it because i doubt they're going to ask the band for ID and if theres a 17 year old with a group o 18 year olds, no one's going to notice. but i'm the oldest, and the others are 15 and 14. they're going to pick up on that, and she must've known it too. she knew we shouldn't be playing and refused to check with the venue if its ok that we're playing, and yet by then i believe she probably was just using us for the drumkit. anyway, we've dropped out of the gig now. i hope it goes well for her and everything, but i didn't want to risk having our drumkit nicked, or risk setting up the drumkit then getting kicked out, risk going to all that effort to be told we can't play or anything like that. my rant may have been a little harsh, but i still stand by it.
  17. haha i've just seen on facebook, the organiser has changed her status to "HELP! anyone know of anyone who has a drum kit i could borrow tomorrow night?! Please please please help!" oh dear!
  18. +1, my SR500 was my first real bass (i had a short scale bronco when i first started learning, and then a yamaha RBX which i didn't like and sold very quickly before my SR500), and i still have it now. i can't imagine ever selling it. its just right in every way, you just cant fault it - i usually prefer chunky necks, but even here, the SR series is an exception. it could be because i've been playing it pretty much since i started bass, but even though if i was to describe my ideal bass it would be the complete opposite (and to prove it, look at my taitycaster!), the SR500 still just works for me.
  19.
So you cant bring friends, you cant drink, you have to hide in the back but you also have to go to a lot of effort for others, and i bet you wouldn't even make any money.
haha i couldn't have put it better myself!
Can the original poster tell me which pub it is, I might just turn up for the entertainment value
in all fairness, i've listened to the other bands on myspace and stuff and they seem like decent bands. if the gig was organised properly, i'd have loved to have played it. hopefully it'll be a good night when it gets round to it - i just wont be there!
  20.
I must admit to being ignorant as to Prosebass. Educate me? Please? Site's inop. G.
paul rose, he's a luthier who's a basschatter here. his builds are really well priced and lovely to play, i expect if you PM him he'll give you a rough quote for what you want. i met him at the nottinghamshire bass bash and played a couple of his builds, and i think he had a 5 string jazz with MM pickup there. i THINK it was nearly finished but not quite done so i didn't get to play it. of course, i could just be imagining it and he didn't have anything of the sort there. anyway, i'm by no means anywhere near the best person to tell you about prosebass, i've not got a bass built by him or anything, i only met him one time at a bash. but you should definatly consider him for a custom build that is really well priced. another idea would be to build it yourself? start with say a squier jazz deluxe 5 (which have, IMO a really nice neck. although i've heard others say they really hate the neck) and route for a musicman pickup? or get someone to route it for you? i'm sure your local music shop would do it for you, or if not there has to be a luthier somewhere in your general area. just an idea.
  21. a few weeks ago one of my mates told me he's got a friend organising a couple of gigs, and she's looking for bands. so he gives her my number and a link to our myspace, and she says she likes our band and do we want to play. so i checked with my band, and we were booked to play at a pub this coming saturday. anyway, she tells me a few days ago there are 3 bands playing, and can we bring our drumkit and can the other bands borrow it. i told her no because my dad's band has a gig the same night and so will be taking the big car, and we can't really fit a bass, a whole drumkit, an amp and 3 people into a fiat punto. well can't i get someone else to take them? maybe, i'll ask my guitarist if he can take some bits, but he usually takes our other guitarists so thats 2 guitars, 2 amps, half a drumkit and 3 people in one car, which isn't entirely plausible. what if she sends someone around to pick the drums up? i'm not comfortable with the idea of a total stranger taking our drumkit. i ask her why another band doesn't just take their drumkits, and she just tells me they can't. so i say well neither can we. but she says why not? if its trouble getting it there, she'll get someone to pick it up. in the end i tell her "well i'll check with my guitarist, see if i can sort anything out. no promises though." anyway, today she added me to the event on facebook. it says in massive letters 18+. now, i'm 17 and one of the older ones in my year at college, so all my friends are 16 or 17. my drummer and guitarist are 15, and our other guitarist is 14. so i asked her about it being over 18, and of course i can't bring any friends under 18. then i said "you do realise none of the band are over 18 right?" and she replied with "sh*t, i just assumed you were! i should have asked, really!" why yes, yes you should. bearing in mind she's only just 18, and the friend that told her about us is 17, is it really that difficult to imagine that his friend's band might contain members under 18? obviously i dont say this to her, i just ask if we can still play. "well, technically you're not allowed. but if you go in the back entrance where there aren't any bouncers, and don't shout about being under 18, you should be ok. obviously don't try to buy any drinks either." me: "but the pub WILL mind that we're under 18 then?" her: "well, if they find out they'll be mad. they've had a go at me before for having under 18 bands play. they've even kicked one band out for being under 18 before". funnily enough, when a different mate found out where we were playing he was suprised because he always thought that pub was strict on 18+ only, but i didn't really think anything of it. her: "anyway, like i said, just go in the back entrance and keep a low profile, you should be ok" later on, another thought strikes me. me: "doesn't it make sense to have another band bring the drumkit anyway? i mean, if we get kicked out, none of the bands will have a drumkit at all, so it doesnt make sense for us to bring it." her: "yeah but none of the other bands CAN bring a drumkit." me: "we've gone through this. we CAN'T bring a drumkit." her: "yeah you can. i'll get a friend to pick it up. you won't get kicked out anyway if you sneak in the back entrance." so... you expect me to go to a stupid amount of trouble to bring a drumkit, involving trusting some total stranger with my brother's drumkit, to a we have to sneak into because we're not allowed to play there, and there's every chance we'll get kicked out and then there'll be no kit at all for any band to play on, thus ruining the gig anyway? i bet you a fiver if that happened another band would magically be able to produce a kit. some people are just unbelievable. i figured before dropping out of the gig i should check with the band, and we decided pretty much straight away (there was no need to think about it), to tell her where she can shove her gig. it's too late to text her now, but first thing tomorrow morning i'm gonna let her know we're not playing. its just stupid. on the bright side my guitarist has just told me he had to turn down a gig at a nice place we've played a few times before (and i know at least one other basschatter has played there before, too, and he said he really enjoyed it) because of this gig, so he's going to try and see if we can still get in there. obviously they might be full now, but they might still be able to fit us in sorry about the rant by the way, i'm just pretty pissed off by it all.
  22. I just fancy a change, and this is the guitar i picked to get rid of. Its a cort zenox z42, in black stain. Its only modification is seymour duncan s8 invaders. It has a 3 way switch, as well as volume/volume/tone and the tone pot has a push/pull switch for coil tap, so is a really versatile guitar. Its lovely, and it definatly plays much nicer than my other guitar (but i'll admit i'm shallow, my other guitar is nicer looking in my eyes!). anyway, a couple of (not great) pictures :- i'll get better pictures if anybody wants them. i basically fancy a trade for a fender style bass, preferably a squier. one of the VM or CV series ideally, but i'll consider anything (even if its not a fender style bass - no harm is asking). Or for sale at £150 If anyone is interested in this or has any questions, email me (my email address can be found on my profile). Thanks.
  23. get very drunk first? in all seriousness, don't think, just do it! you'll be alright once you're up there! twice a year i do these gigs where i end up playing bass with lots of different drummers and guitarists aged anywhere from 7-19 years (there are also a couple of adults, but 95% of these people are aged 7-19). for a lot of the younger ones (and a lot of the older ones, too) these are their first gigs, back when i was 11 one of these gigs was my first gig! and so loads of them are absolutely crapping it beforehand, but also most of them love it when theyre up there, and can't wait for the next one. you'll have a great time!

    Mistakes

jazz. just in general. sounds like one big mistake to me.
  25. i actually quite like the shape. if that was done up right, i think it could be a pretty cool looking bass.
