  1. Yes I hear the woody tone of the bass, it sounds more like a bass to me on flats. Warm depth to the sound and allows pick playing too without sounding thin
  2. Interested to what your reason for swopping to Flatwounds was Mine was seeking a warmer tone with thump even when using a pick The other benefits came later ie longevity and smoothness etc
  3. Thanks .. I’ve tried the shoulder in picks apart from triangle picks of course ! I have loads of different picks already so ideally don’t want to keep buying too many more. I read the Nylon Big Stubby was popular with Flats hence why I’ve purchased some to try I have Tortex in 0.73, 0.88, 1mm, 1.14mm also Nylon 0.88 and 1mm then Ultex in 0.88 and 1mm A few Primetone picks, some Dava Control, Adam Clayton picks, etc etc
  4. Having discovered the benefits of Flatwound strings and for my PBass playing rock bass ( nothing too heavy ) think AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, etc I am now trying to choose a good pick to use. I am trying to keep the “ full thump” tone and can’t decide on the warmer Nylon Picks or Tortex Picks for a brighter tone. So far I’m going between Tortex 1.14mm Dunlop Purple or Dunlop 1mm Nylon Ive also got some 2mm Big Stubby Nylon on the way to try. Trying to avoid the clanky bright tone but more deep thump tone of classic rock era. Don’t suggest fingers as I’m preferring pick playing in my current band
  5. I’m really enjoying the smooth feel too Makes slides etc so much easier on the fingers They seem to play better with a pick compared to rounds as much better thump and less clang Hopefully they work at next band rehearsal and my studio visit this month
  6. What I’m learning using flats … The tone has a woody thump vibe and with a pick ( nylon ) it sits well for rock and has a sound that is typical 60’s 70’s rock It works very well with a PBass and my Ashdown abm600 rig. Plenty of wallop and thump and so much kinder to your fingers. Reduced string noise too
  7. They are so different to roundwounds and initially look odd to a roundwound user of many years. For using a pick they seem to be a match and give a warm thump to the tone. Added advantage I can leave them on for ages !!
  8. I tune to Eb so tension perfect
  9. First time user of flats on my PBass Labella 760FL fitted to my player series PBass and Fender 9050L flats fitted to my Squire Classic Vibe Pbass Less string noise and so smooth and next the tone test Let’s see how they work with the band
  10. Thanks and yep I’m ok with palm muting too
  11. Just ordered La Bella 43-104 flats for my PBass playing rock but now using a pick instead of fingers I love the pick for speed etc but on roundwounds missed the warm full thump that fingers produce Hoping these plus pick with an EQ tweek get me the rock tone I’m after Think Thin Lizzy kind of tone
  12. Ordered some La Bella 43-104 flats to try 👍
  13. Thinking about popping flats on my PBass as I hear that with a pick is good
  14. One of the old Ampeg BA108 combo amps would be a good choice I have the BA110 for upstairs use and they are great low cost amps
  15. I like the warmer tone of Nylon but you can’t buy triangle picks in Nylon like the Tortex or Ultex triangle picks
  16. I’m using an Ashdown ABM600 and Ampeg SVT212AV cab
  17. I know the question of getting pick tone with fingers is often talked about but … What about getting finger tone while using a pick ?? Possible with EQ ? Im heading to the studio to record some rock songs and as a finger player who also plays well with a pick wondered if the pick would benefit the recoding if I can get the tone close
  18. I think it also depends on the band. My band is a three piece plus singer rock band so I have to be heard as if not the guitarist sounds lost and empty during solos etc
  19. Not now … bass - lead - amp - cab 👍
  20. Ampeg SVT212AV Amazing cab for single use Apart from being a tad heavy it’s one of the best cabs I’ve used Best cab was Ampeg 610 but way too heavy
  21. Very nice
  22. Nothing wrong with the Ampeg Opto Compressor, in fact it’s great but .. I like the idea of nothing between bass lead and amp for the purest signal hitting the amp. Ive now ditched the Line 6 G30 wireless too
  23. Update .. decided to go totally back to guitar lead straight to amp Line 6 up for sale on eBay as is my Compressor TU3 sold
  24. I’m seriously thinking if I really need to use an outboard compressor pedal and my Boss TU3 I am liking the fact it keeps my signal in check on my ABM600 but perhaps if I turn down the input slightly I can ignore the use of a compressor ( acting more as a limiter ) and as I tune up typically twice per session with the band ditch the tuner and use a clip on when not playing ( start of set ) I would still use my Line 6 G30 wireless which I really. Just a thought do I really need the compressor at all ? I never slap and play finger style for mostly rock
