  1. can anyone recommend software that does the same as a bass trainer does? ie enable you to loop a section of a song that you're trying to learn and also change the key without changing the tempo. I've thought about getting one of the Tascam style ones but if I have a song to learn then the music is generally on my PC anyway. the facility to burn the song in the new key would be fantastic as well but does such a beast exist?

  3. For me it has a lot to do with disliking active electronics and wanting something basic. I've been through the whole 5, 6, 8, 12 string, fretless thing with more controls than the Hubble space telescope and wanted to go for something that sounds good without all the gubbins attached. This is why I went down the route of getting the Warmoth basses. What i got were 2 basses First bass looks like one of the early precisions but is made with different woods to sound the way I wanted the bass to sound. The second one is identical to a 1957 pre-facelift precision, right down to the paper in oil cap. I'm happy as i have something that I like that is simple to operate and that I don't have to put a lot of work into making it sound good. In fact, if it didn't leave holes I would remove the controls completely on both of them. That, to me, is one of the reasons that people go for older instruments. Its the original, simple design. Used in so many recordings to great effect. There will always be a place for these instuments as reliable workhorse basses. One bass player's collection that i have always admired is Bob Daisley's. He has some cracking old Fenders.

    I also have a GT6-B. Its the mutts. I wanted a single board with everything in it. relatively easy to program, ability to add effects over your patches with the dedicated pedals. Never sound as good as expensive single pedals but that's pretty subjective. Plus its only one unit instead of many. i love it.

  10. i was Listening to Queen when I started. Another one bites the dust etc The next stage was Eric Clapton - '24 Nights' - I learned everything Nathan East played and then speeded it up from 33 1/3 rmp to 45 rpm and learned it again Next stage was Cream stuff and then status quo and finally Pink Floyd before rounding out everything with the chilis.

  12. PM'd I'd have to say that I find my GK head far better than the Markbass stuff. I tried out one of the combos down in Promenade music in Morcambe but wasn't won over by the sound or what it could do in general. I would quite like to try out on the GK Fusion heads but don't know if anyone has these in stock yet.

  14. What if the 'sh*t' sound I get from my Boss turns out to be what I'm after? Thouoght about that? I'm sorry but I don't like being told my equipment is sh*t. I initially thought you were young due to the lack of subtlety in your post but you are clearly old enough to know better. this thread was started because i thought that a valve amp might be what my sound needed and i merely pointed out that i am still unsure as to what to do after the (mostly) helpful advice. In the meantime i was going to try and play about with the settings on my effects to see if that helps until such time as i get to borrow a valve amp for a gig or at least get to try one in a shop
  15. Looking closely at the manual for my Boss GT6-B, it has several preamp settings including Ampeg flip top & SVT and Fender Bassman. Think I'll give these a go to and see how i get on. I can't afford a new amp just now anyway so may as well experiment with what I have. I've been trying to find a couple of online articles i read recently - one is something along the lines of the myth of tube amps and the other is an interview with this guy who apparently knows everything about tubes. Can't remember if I read them here or on Talkbs Thanks for all the help and advice. I've not made up my mind whether or not to go down the valve route but at least this gives me something to think about.
  16. wow, i didn't expect so many responses while i was away. The valve amp, should i get one, would be used with my pub covers band so no PA. i realise that valve amps are reliable, just that you have to look after them in the sense of not bumping or dropping them, letting the valves heat up / cool down properly. Solid state, you switch on and away you go. I don't have a problem with looking after a valve amp in that sense. i think i would really need to try one in a gig situation but don't know anyone around my way who has one, let alone allowing me to borrow it. I may have the only GK head in Central Scotland, 99% sure the only Schroeder cab.
  17. Postage will be a very generous £10 for a 2-3 day service by DHL. this is what it is costing me, I am not making anything out of it. The bass will be packed in the boxes my Warmoth bass came in as well. I will accept Paypal (no extra charge) & cheque if you live too far to collect it or cash if you are collecting it. It is all boxed up and ready to go. i just need to put your address on it and get DHL to come and pick it up. Quite a bit of interest but no one has commited yet so it could be yours.
  18. i have always used solid state bass amps. the only exception being my Hartke HA5500 and Ashdown EVO 500 RC which had a valve in the preamp. I have only recently developed an interest in valve amps and have heard very conflicting stories about them. I don't mind the changing of the valves and looking after them carefully to prolong the life of the valves. The eight doesn't bother me either - i want to tell you all what I have and what I sound like and let you advise me if you think I would benefit from a valve amp rather than going out and spending a grand on one to discover its not for me. My 2 basses are both Warmoth '54 P basses - One is soon to have a bartolini active 2 band EQ installed and the other is an accurate reproduction of an original '56 P bass. I play these into a Gallien Krueger 700RB II and Schroeder 1212L via a Boss GT6-B. I play fingerstyle where the pickup would be on a Stingray due to years of playing Stingrays and use a lot of staccato notes. I like a punchy, well defined sound and like to play relatively fast. I very rarely use a pick or slap. the valve amp would be mainly used with the '56 bass. This one has a fatter tone which sounds really good but I feel that it needs something more with a touch of growly overdrive to finish the sound off. What i am looking for is to keep the punchy, well defined sound that will cut through but I want something dirty to add a bit of grind to my sound and most valve amps seem to be able to offer that rather than go for a processed effect from the GT6-B which would be good but never as good as natural distortion from a valve amp. Or would I be wasting my time with something that won't get me a better sound than I already have? Any help or advise would be appreciated
  19. Both my Warmoth's have jazz width necks with the tele headstock. If you take your time its not that difficult to put one together. The holes are already there for the neck and body to be screwed together; drill pilot holes for the tuners and make sure they are straight; the holes for the bridge are already there as well, just screw it on after feeding the ground wire through the hole to the control cavity; you could use a prewired assembly for the electronics. Most manufacturers offer these - if you want passive there a few guys doing prewired passive wiring on Ebay; strings on and away you go. Where do you live by the way?

I can't remember who it is now - East or ACG are ringing bells - do a preamp system where you actually insert the wires from the pickup into a slot and hold it in position by screwing a small clamp down onto it similar to fitting cables into a socket or light switch By the way I'm happy to help you if you need it. I've done 2 Warmoths now but I've also installed pickups, bridges etc into many basses and melted a few soldering irons in the process. There's not really anyone around where I live to do any of these things for me so I've just had to learn everything myself by trial and error and frequenting bass forums
  21. After playing Stingrays for years ( 4s & 5s ) I naturally play at the stingray pickup position even though both of my basses are '53 P clones. It took me a long time to adjust to not having the anchor that the low B gave me for all those years I prefer playing here as I like a punchy sound and use a lot of staccato in my playing. I'l generally only venture to the neck if i intentionally want to thicken up the sound without mucking about with the controls. Something like the intro to 'let there be love' by Nat King Cole (was a merry old soul) but when it gets to the first verse, I'll revert back to my usual position so that it cuts through better. A couple examples of people using their right hand up against the neck are Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath and Stanley Clarke. Geezer plays right up against the neck because he began playing an old P bass and didn't realise that the pickup covers came off! I'm guessing that Stanley plays there because of his upright playing. 2 different players playing different styles with similar right hand positioning but completely different sounds.

  23. No one ever gets to use my gear. its mine, I paid for it and if you want to advertise yourself as a bass player then you need to have the tools of a bass player. You wouldn't get a driving instuctor walk round to your house and ask to use your car to give you a lesson would you? But - I always hate using other people's gear in case I break it. Especially when it is something that I wouldn't trust like Behringer which i have had bad luck with in the past. There's a guy i know used to do a jam session on a sunday and he always supplied the bass gear but I trusted it cos it was a Hartke 7000 head with a couple of Trace cabinets. I've owned all that and know what it can do. Now as far as my bass goes. there is no way in the world that anyone would ever get to play my bass. If someone asked then I would say "yes, as long as i can take your car to a demolition derby"
  24. Very good amps these. I've had mine for a couple of years now. I run mine with almost all controls completely flat - that is how good they sound
  25. Okay £500 plus postage will get you this once fine bass. I've had a rake around and generally they go for between £1200-1400 in decent nick. Obviously taking into consideration the parts that are no longer with it and the refinish needed on the body. I reckon for someone refinishing this themselves with non period replacement parts you would be looking at £55 tops to get it up and running
