1. I was planning on buying myself something special next year as a kind of treat to myself for my 25th anniversary since I started playing. I would really have liked a Thunderbird but they didn't make them in 1975 so the closest would be the 1976 Bicentennial. I've always fancied a fender Mustang but I'd need to try one first. I suppose I could go for a predictable Precision or a rather unpredictable maple fretless one.
2. I think that this is one of those subjects that seems to come up quite regularly as I've definitely posted this before but I thought I'd take a picture. One Thunderbird on a £4.82 Thomann Millenium stand I've even had an explorer on there before.
3. I own only one but still go to the for sale section only to find nothing of interest. I have owned a vast array of basses so its kind of 'been there done that' when I look.
4. They're not polished like Chromes or as grubby looking as TIs but they are perfectly smooth. That's why I noticed the change on the D string.
5. If its buzzing at the bottom end then that would indicate not enough relief in the neck. The way I've always done it (which may or may not be correct) is that if I'm getting buzzing in the lower frets then I need to add more relief and if the higher frets are buzzing then I need to straighten the neck more. If it buzzes the full length of the neck then I just need to raise the action. If the bridge saddles bottom out, ie you can't lower them anymore but the action is still too high for you then that would be the time to shim the neck. i don't have any pics but I usually cut out a section of my worktop edging so that it fits in from the body end and just comes past the neck screws nearest the body and then cut out enough to let the screws miss it if that makes sense. The super step strings won't make a difference to the action of the bass other than you have to raise the bridge saddles to compensate for the lack of mass as the strings pass over the saddles. I think they're more for sound difference rather than helping you acheive lower action
6. If you're talking about the Bass Collection SB315 you have, I used to have an SB365 and used the now discontinued Elites Nathan East signature set and they worked perfectly but I can't remember the gauge - something like 47, 67, 85, 105, 130. I always used a 130 B string on all my 5s and 6s
7. Anything that's not going to compress when you tighten the neck bolts again. I have a length of work top edging that I use. the way I installed my kitchen I didn't need any of it so I had about 3m spare
8. I think its exactly the same as the higher end Peavey basses - Both brands tend to be associated with solid, budget friendly instruments. Its not that there's anything wrong with them, its just that we're not used to brands such as this selling things with a price tag at this level
9. Unfortunately I don't know who does Laney round my way so I had to but it online without trying it out from Digital Village. If its anything like the 15" then the 8x10" will be a belter
10. If it got me more exposure then I'd do it. Actually the thrill of playing a huge stage is enough for me.
11. But meant to be very good. I'd take them but I only have one bass and my roto flats ain't coming off
12. I've had a love/hate relationship with flats for most of my bass playing life. Love because they're silky smooth and hate because I've never been able to find the right tension or sound from the ones I'd tried. That was until I decided to have a go at these after going through an Iron Maiden phase. I like everything about them - I was able to buy the same gauge as I was using with roundwounds (45s) and they were about the same tension. They are silky smooth and although I still get blisters, even after 24 years of playing, they're not as bad as I used to get. They don't have a very good slap sound which is great because I've never found a use for that particular style except for the big rock song ending so I can concentrate on other styles instead. I can do two handed tapping with them I can get a really dirty sound when using a plectrum They are still pretty bright for flats and I've never actually noticed any change in tone as they settled in. Another big plus from me is that after 5 months I noticed that the D felt as though the wrap wires had gaps between them, more like TI flats so emailed Rotosound for advice. After a couple of emails describing the symptoms, they sent me out a brand new string. After 5 months use!
13. Well. after 4 months use I thought I'd report back on how I'm getting on with this. I still love it just as much as I did when I did my initial review. Still using the Thunderbird which has a pair of EMG 35 HZs now but with the same set of Rotosound flats and Gallien 700RB II. When I did my original review, I had just finished a gig using an Ibanez SRX 5 string tuned a semitone down and it was loud as hell, hence my description of how careful you'd need to be if you like a lot of low, rumbly bass if you have an active 5 string. I've now used this cab for several gigs with the rock band as well as loads with the wedding/function band and its been rock solid every time. Every gig with the rock band so far has been without PA support and its performed magnificantly and nowhere near approaching a level where it would be distorting. Even with the OC-2 running, the sound is flawless and you can only hear the dirty madness that this pedal produces. The finish is holding up well: I had roqsolid make me a cover for it after sending them the dimensions so it never goes anywhere without that. There's only one thing I don't like and that is that the speakon cable doesn't click into position but that may be because its a combi jack socket but then again the one on my Schroeder didn't either After 4 months I'm still contemplating a second one for larger gigs but haven't really needed it so far so haven't taken the plunge.
14. If this is half as good as the one I tried at Thornybank's old place that I think belongs to Rumour6 then its going to be a cracker. I nearly walked out with that bass as well as the tradings we did that day
15. I used to get a year's worth of gigs out of an Energiser - at the time it was around 70 plus practices
16. I've had a couple of Lollar pickups sent from the US and didn't have to pay anything extra
17. Not only listening to but watching also; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xnmzins2Uow Foo Fighters new album. These days I find myself more entertained by drummers than bass players and currently none moreso than Taylor Hawkins
18. Decided to sell the Trace Combo that this was living in as one of my trademark changes of mind so its on Egay now.. Withdrawn Thanks for all the info and offers
19. A Squier VM Mustang - much rather have one of these to the Bronco/Musicmaster More lower end 12vers. I wouldn't use one enough to justify spending £1500 on that Chandler Royale on Ebay but I would have one in a minute. Easy peasy - 5 string neck, slightly longer headstock, one of those cheapy string through body bridges off Ebay, bob's your uncle
20. Nat King Cole - The Christmas Song Its all over the place. I find the swing/big band arrangements the hardest to learn without the dots which is strange considering that my first real band at 17 was in a big band with a Dixieland band as a spin-off from this
21. I use a single Laney Nexus NX15 15" cab for everything. Its not trendy, its not expensive and I think there's probably only one other member on here that has one but I am seriously happy with my sound and its only 20kg. I'm thinking about a second one for the biggest of non-pa gigs but so far have yet to run into any problems with volume so haven't bothered so far. if you want more, the 4x10" is only 27.5kg and even the 8x10" is only 45kg which is nothing compared to the 75kg Ampeg 8x10" You don't really need to worry about running your amp at 4ohms. I don't think I've ever ran my Gallien 700RB II with a 4 ohm load.
22. I've got a cheapy Meridian 80w guitar combo with a Celestion that I picked up for peanuts. Has phono inputs and headphone out. Plus with it being a guitar combo, it doesn't annoy the neighbours. Although it does still put out a low of low end for a guitar combo.
23. that stand has and will take a full weight 4x10", I even used it with my Trace V-type combo a couple of years ago. You would have to push the stand back until its about 5" off the floor before it would start to tip. totally solid, even with drunk punters insisting on leaning against it to request songs. It doesn't look doom but I'd rather be able to hear myself clearly than have an impractical 8x10" penis extension behind me
24.
I'd consider a swap for an acre of the moon.
I could kick you in the stones then you'd have 2 acres. Boom boom I thank you
25. Maybe it was originally a 'private collection' piece cos they were too embarrassed to show that bloody awful looking thing initially
