Basses you don't regret selling (or regret buying)
Grooverjr replied to BassAgent's topic in Gear Gallery
Two stand out for me, although I only regret selling one of the basses I have moved on (ACG 5 er which I should have persevered with). Peavey T40. Black with maple board. Probably my favourite looking bass of all time and the neck felt great but tone wise I couldn't find anything anywhere in its multiple knobs that I liked. And it didn't sit nicely with the slab body. Moved it on for more than I paid for it and it mostly covered a Vigier Passion with carbon neck which is IMO the second best looking bass but is also amazing to play and has a bunch of great sounds. Squier jaguar SS. Looks cool, lovely playing neck but just too toy like for my big hands and the generic PJ was just too weedy. Gave it to a good friend with small hands who loves it and it has started to ween him off his guitar foolishness so definitely no regrets. -
Oh my oh my oh my! If I wasn't about to emigrate for good I would already be on a tube. If this lasts to the end of the day I'll be amazed. I have Ped's old Passion with the graphite neck and can safely say it is the most easy playing bass imaginable. And this one has even better looks as well. Whoever gets this will be very very lucky.

What are your irrational prejudices? I have some bonkers ones...

I have an irrational prejudice against people whose prejudices are all completely rational 🤣 -

And in any case, saying tremolo means you miss out on the opportunity to say "whammy bar". Life is too short to pass up such chances at mirth. -

All this hat indoors talk and nobody has mentioned sunglasses indoors yet! At least a hat is just impolite or misguided. Sunglasses indoors is also actively prejudicial to your ability to do basic things like seeing properly. A live musician wearing sunglasses automatically gets filed in my mental "tryhard" drawer and any musicality dies. -

PJs and painted necks and skinny nut widths. And then I picked up a Jack bass with all three of those horrors and I am loving it. But I still feel the same about PJ, painted necks and skinny nuts. I think that must be the dictionary definition of irrational prejudice. I would put my dislike of OTT slap, showing off in general, the fact that Scott Devine has buried what was a really good teacher deep underneath his desperate desire to be 'down with the kids' and many of the other things already mentioned in the 'rational response to unpleasant stimuli' camp. Can't say I hate them, they're just facts I accept and move on from. People who dislike baked beans, however..... -
Tried listening to The Stranglers today....
Grooverjr replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
I find there's something about JJs tone that makes it very hard to pinpoint the lowest notes. Also there are times when he follows Dave and others where he doesn't. I agree with Mr Valdemar that in this case he doesn't move. -
I think most people know what this is. Incredibly versatile but I just don't use it. Boxed. One small scratch but otherwise clean as a whistle, which I suppose you could say is ironic given what it does to your sound 😜 Can post at buyer's cost or collection / meetup in Bromley (Kent, not Bow) or I get to Rochester fairly regularly.

Question: Filling pocket screw holes on maple neck
Grooverjr replied to Grooverjr's topic in Repairs and Technical
I think the inserts are the way to go as it will also avoid future problems. Thanks! -
Question: Filling pocket screw holes on maple neck

Yes they align. Wasn't aware of neck inserts. Is it just a case of making holes big enough for the inserts then bolting on? That would certainly be easier.... Thanks a lot -
Question: Filling pocket screw holes on maple neck
Grooverjr posted a topic in Repairs and Technical
This is really a noob woodworking question. I got a MIM Fender maple neck that I want to put on a standard P body. Neck fits the pocket very nicely but when I went to screw it in I realised the screw holes on the neck had no bite on two of the holes. I'm using standard screws from Allparts and they are perfect for the body. It seems the neck has either previously been used with bigger screws or has just been badly treated when adjusting the truss rod (it's a heel adjuster). What would be the best thing to fill the holes and get them gripping the screws? As it's a heel adjust I will need to be able to unscrew and re screw a few times to get the right setup, barring incredible first time luck! Thanks. -
Headless Bass String adaptors

Ok, so I was being a bit broad brush. There are many valid trills, but they tend to be integral to the writing of the music (see strings in classical music for example). I was using it as shorthand for when people, especially vocalists and guitarists but also your Jools Holland types, fart around with a note instead of holding it or cutting it. I'm off outside now, to shout at some clouds.

Hello, friend The actual guitar you receive is same to the photo we listed.if you are interested, you can make an order.Thank you Maybe their translation software used 'same' as shorthand for 'vaguely similar' 😀

Trills on anything. Full stop.

I'm 50 and I've just taken Voluntary Exit after 24 years with the same outfit, moving round the world and largely being carefree. My daughter is 18 and struggling to work out what to do but has settled for the moment on studying speech therapy because she wants to do something that helps people. My son is 15 and has had to drop out of school education because there is noone doing Cambridge qualifications in Bolivia, which is where we are going mainly because the UK is just too expensive to go into. How is this me,me,me relevant? Well, firstly I could have stayed on and come back to the UK but I realised that the politics and nonsense and the direction of things had outweighed the joy I got from supporting and developing the people in my teams. I have no idea what is coming (other than homeschooling my boy to try and get him 5 GCSEs!) and there is definitely a big dollop of guilt / concern that I should have stayed for the stability but life's too short to be surrounded by the fallout from incompetent people covering up their own failures and insecurities by attacking others and being drawn into it. I've not been in a band for a long time but it does sound familiar.... Another big element was not wanting to come back to present day England. Every time I have come back over the past 10 years or so it's seemed there is a growing sense of dissatisfaction and passive (or not so passive) aggression across the board. Obviously there are islands of sanity and decency but the bickering over minutiaee Andy describes sounds totally unsurprsing. I love North Kent and it's etched in my heart but I don't want bad vibes to drain that love and it sounds like Andy is making exactly that decision - get away to keep the kernel of what you love about making music alive. We've moved every 2-4 years for the last 25 years and there is definitely a cycle of catharsis getting shot of the crap we've built up. I wonder if that has stopped me having any of the other cycles so many people have described here. Maybe these cycles are a natural part of life and staying sane in a modern world where we don't need to graft to get food on a daily basis. Long rambling post but I say good on you, Andy. Don't get stuck in the rut or make decisions that are positive, not avoiding possible negatives. You sound like you have a very full life outside of the band and it doesn't need to define you. Luckily for me, I'm now out of buying mode, but I'll enjoy watching the circus!

It's the old "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is". That's why it's always best to buy from forums or from actual shops. But their 'market' is people who don't know what they are looking at, I suppose.
-
I love that. Original and custom but not OTT. I'd have thought about that wrap myself but I just realised that of my 8 basses not a one has a pickguard!

I understand that tastes differ wildly but I'm talking about accessibility rather than taste. If it 'goes over the head of people who have a general enjoyment of music - meaning that they do not understand it, not that they don't like it - and the technical aspects are all that recommend it then, IMO (and other opinions are obviously available), it is failing in some kind of fundamental way. It doesn't disqualify it as a form of expression but I don't think it fits in my understanding of 'good music'. Just as on the other side if soemthing is entirely vacuus but lots of people like iit (Rock DJ being a prime example of this) I also don't think it qualifies as 'good music'.

If the music only works as musicianship and isn't something a non-musician can appreciate then is it good music, or just good technique? The best stuff works on both levels, with the musicianship adding a dimension but not getting in the way.
