  1. I spent an hour bouncing between the Trib and a US model , and then came to the conclusion that they were pretty close , and bought the Trib. It was a very early Korean one. As it turns out I’m simply not a five string guy at all.
  2. I thought MA did that one.
  3. Simply gorgeous. I get a little weak in the knees looking at something like that! Congratulations! A new bass can initially feel a bit odd , but simply putting the time on it will remove that. Over the years I’ve acquired a good number of different basses and no longer have many specific preferences.
  4. Look at what 4005 basses are selling for , Gibson , Ball Family Reserve , and Fender custom shop are more expensive . It’s a limited run instrument that will increase in value if their past runs are any indication. Oh it was too rich for me but I loved the bass.
  5. The Jupiter looks like it was influenced too , but they did give it a distinctive headstock!
  6. Fender manage to put out Jazz basses at quite a few price points , and even the lowly Squier is generally a fine playable instrument , or on the other hand you can get a hand built custom shop version for considerably more money. I got my first Fender back when there was just one Pbass in the catalogue . You had some colour options and it seemed no two at the time felt the same . You’d play a dozen to pick out the “one”. There was just one Jazz bass too. And they were equally inconsistent. The builds are a hell of a lot more consistent today. Play it for a while before you get carried away modding it. They’re quite nice just as they are. Looks lovely! Congratulations! edit … I’d tort that thing!
  7. A Unicorn popped up on the local online buy&sell , kijiji. I dawdled and an old friend snagged it. I prefer short scales these days and was somewhat relieved , and yet somehow he wound up flipping it to me to buy something else a couple of weeks later. The Unicorn is a great bass! Mine is the RUB-1095 Deluxe with a fat old humbucker on the bridge. Very nicely made , very enjoyable neck. Great sounding thing. And it just fits a Les Paul guitar case! Recently another rare Riverhead Jupiter popped up for sale and I convinced my buddy to grab it. Unfortunately production ceased after the factory in Japan burned down in the late 80’s.
  8. For so many years people gave Rickenbacker grief for just turning out the same old stuff. But the last couple of years have been interesting because of the various small runs they’ve been doing. And there’s been lots of checkerboard binding. That was like a bass version of Harrison’s legendary twelve string. And the order window has closed. I couldn’t quite justify the price at the time , but I loved it. Short scale too. If they were to use a 350 body and put a short scale neck on it I’d be in trouble. Just yesterday they announced a yellow 4003 with checkerboard.
  9. I’ve been surprised by some Tribs.
  10. My old 72 Pbasses.

https://www.basschat.co.uk/profile/46-bassassin/ The guy I bought my Unicorn from recently picked up a Riverhead Jupiter with the funny headstock! It turned up on what we call the French Shore out on the Bay of Fundy.

I suppose when there’s too much of a good thing …

    Guilty pleasures

It’s a pleasure. And a common expression here in NS.
  14. I use an old laptop bag for my little GK MB200 perfect!

Sweet jumping Jesus! You’ve got the same pair, and neither is common.
  16. You might consider a SCPB. They’re a different animal than the later split coil basses. Many prefer them. I have a MIJ school bus yellow one and it has one of the liveliest G strings I’ve ever played. Strung mine with Thomastik flats , it’s a great thump machine.
  17. Go for something different , I think the Tbird suggestions were spot on.
  18. We’ve alluded to a mysterious but highly communicable persistent rash whenever a certain guitar player has gone missing.
  19. I used a maple unlined 72 Pbass as my primary bass for some years , but I started using other fretted basses and I eventually sold it. I regret that now. I still play upright , and keep an Ashbory around for those times I want to hear iffy intonation. That little Ashbory is really a beach to intonate in the upper register.
  20. A little time spent playing something and I seem to find comfort.
  21. I’m a sucker for them simply because they look so good. I’ve got four basses with the 3 point , always been able to set them just where I want , but I like the Hipshot. The DC Jr would probably get the first one.
  22. Are you happy with the Hipshot? I’ve been on the fence for a couple of years now.
  23. We’ve always had a good local music scene here. In all genres. That also translates to a surprising number of older instruments around.
  24. The Levy company started here in Nova Scotia , they became famous for their straps. I was doing an outdoor show across the harbour in Dartmouth last month and a guy asked me how I liked the case. He had worked up in Antigonish for Levy Leather for thirty five years! And mentioned the leather in my case was beautiful leather. They do make a larger bass case, but they’re pricey. But they are beautifully made , and tough. A friend has been using one every week for well over thirty years now, and it’s still in perfect shape, the wear has given it wonderful patina , and all of the zippers still work like new ones. After around two years mine still looks brand new. I was looking at Levy , Warwick , and Maruszczyk this time around and the best price for what was available was the Maruszczyk. I’m expecting similar quality to the Levy.
