Function band ! Can you actually make a living ?
msb replied to fiatcoupe432's topic in General Discussion
I was a commercial photographer , worked for years in established studios and then finally got out on my own and built up a business. Back in the film days , it all sounds wonderful but much of it was shooting grocery flyers with nasty deadlines and last second substitutions. I was paying a mortgage , and rent and still managing a lot of gigs. Late nights , early mornings. I traded one boss for many , and loved the business. Now I’m retired. Still gig , the mortgage is long paid. I don’t have debt. Here in Atlantic Canada it’s a difficult hoe being a full time musician. There’s little studio work , but there’s a thriving bar scene. Many supplement the gigs with teaching. It’s not easy. Most have a daytime gig of some kind to manage the bills. It certainly keeps everyone humble. -
Ouch I’m well into geezerdom now , but I believe in modern lightweight and much smaller amps and cabs. I pack the car , drive it downtown , set it up and play. And then drive it home after too. If I had a crew moving stuff I might reconsider , but I just play mid sized rooms downtown. No big star , just a working blue collar musician.

What would You call "Your doping" for bass playing?

Might have a beer when I get home after the gig. Not a drug user. I really hadn’t planned to become so moderate. Not really sure just how it happened. I’m ok with it. -
Function band ! Can you actually make a living ?

It’s easier to almost make a living playing music. -
There’s nothing quite like a big a*s Ampeg rig and a Pbass. But I hope you have someone else to lug them around.

A friend picked it up this afternoon. Her primary instrument is baritone sax , but she’s been playing bass for several years now , she’s a music teacher. And easily the most in demand bari player in the region. She was asking me about the cab at the jam last night. The seller also had a Darkglass MicroTubes 500 v1 , and she picked up that as well. So now she has one killer little rig! I’m happy to see it go to her.

The outfits I play in are not real loud at all , and my gig rig is more than adequate. So I’m looking for tone over volume. Home practice at a low volume , and the odd band rehearsal (not real loud). A surprising number of players here have never heard of Barefaced.

I began with USP tracking , and had regular updates , but the moment it’s left the international depot for customs , everything goes quiet. In the past Can Post has not continued any updates until it’s out for delivery , or delivered. … sometimes I’m contacted to pay duty in advance , sometimes it’s just held at the post office and I pay when I pick it up. It’s never consistent.

The TH is still in the mail , it’s now in Canada but the US Postal tracking stops after it crosses the border except to say that it’s finally delivered.

Lessons might prevent some bad habits from getting ingrained. I’ve somehow managed to retain some. Welcome! Some may well think it’s madness , but it’s not a bad way to go.

you’re missing a lot of fun

I’ve got a TH 350 on the way to use with the SL. So I’m hanging on to that. I’m tempted simply by the rarity , we never see Barefaced. And I do appreciate a nice cab. So I’ll hold back for the time being and keep an eye on this. As it didn’t immediately sell I think it might be around for a while. Most folk here have never heard of Barefaced. I’m hooked on kijiji. Over the years I’ve found quite a bit of stuff there , some great deals , and some not so great deals.

My Aguilar is just two pounds heavier than the Barefaced 112. It’s the SL112. My Ampeg is just the 210AV I picked up as a home use practice cab. Not a great cab , but ok. Bergs are the HDN series , a 112&210. I love those things. And it’s an easy drive on divided highway. Our roads are not generally too crowded. I think I’m going to hold off for a couple of hours. And see if it goes. I have a feeling it’s going to sit for a while. In the ad there’s a Darkglass Microtubes V1 sitting on the cab. Our nearest stocking dealer would be in Montreal. So whoever has this has good taste. We see lots of pedals but few Darkglass amps around here.

That’s quite a spread between the two.

They do love their SVT and 810 rigs. And they sound electric.

A 12 Super Compact appeared on our local kijiji for $1000 Cdn. It’s about an hour’s drive away in Lunenburg. I’m well cabbed , and Herself is happy to see an amp or bass arrive at the door , but draws the line at cabs. We do not see Barefaced around here often. A new Super Compact is just over $1400 Cdn , and then there’s shipping taxes and duty. And I’m divided. However I do already have Bergantino , Aguilar , Phil Jones and Ampeg cabs.

Once you’re up to snare drum levels it sounds electric.

I’m a colonial , but welcome ! This is a nice diverse group . I initially joined to learn more about amps and cabs that we rarely see over on this side of the Atlantic. There’s some wonderful stuff that unfortunately doesn’t have much of a presence here.

I found an Aguilar 350 in the States and it’s on the way. Even after dealing with the exchange , duties and shipping I came out ok. This is just for use at home , I picked up an Aguilar cab a while back and was hoping to add an amp designed for it.

This is 34 in , but is like a Jazz bass on steroids.

Seeing as I’m not into Fender shaped stuff these days , and having developed a preference for short scales , I often decide between these two. The Gibson Jr has a humbucker in the classic sweet spot , has two knob simplicity. It acts much like a Pbass , although it has a set neck. This little thing can roar. A vintage HiFlier. Flats. Two single coil P90 style pickups , I admit the VVT concept is more fluid than TV and a toggle switch. But this is surprisingly fast to dial in. And is much thumpier than any Jazz I’ve played. And takes an enormous seat in a mix. It’s also cool as all heck.
