It is, a 2nd gen V7. I like it a lot, and while I really want to sell it and get one of the new Sadowsky MXs, every time I play it I have fun so I have a crisis of faith. I just find the preamp too complicated so am running it passive these days, which kind of defeats the point of having an active bass.

At their best Squiers can definitely go toe to toe with much pricier instruments. My Precision is a joy to play, and the VM70s Jazz I used to have was, IMO, a better bass than the Fender Vintera equivalent (or at least the example I tried).

A smaller cricket club gig last night so I thought I'd give the Elf a run out, and oh boy did it not disappoint. Plenty loud enough and great tone, and I think will my smaller gig amp of choice for the future so I don't have to lug the ABM around (although it will remain in the boot of the car as a backup). Not a huge crowd who mostly stayed seated all night, but they seemed to enjoy it so happy days. I even met the band's first bassist which was fun, and I suspect was the cause of some ego stroking by the rest of the band as I gather he left under not the best of circumstances. It was a clammy night so my strings and neck were stickier than usual, and led to some on-the-fly simplifications as my fingers got stuck, but otherwise I was really happy with my playing. Some u fortunate humming from my pedalboard meant I had to stick to just the tuner and compressor, and so I think my cheap-as-chips daisy chain power supply might need an upgrade!

"Need" doesn't enter into it. I bought mine as a backup to my ABM but am going to give it a whirl for a smallish gig tonight and keep the ABM in reserve.

It has a big but simple display, which works well for a big but simple bloke like myself.

I toyed with a few practice combos when I had some student loan money burning a hole in my bank account, including a Laney kickback combo and very nearly a tiny SWR thing (possibly a Workingman's 10?), but once I tried the Boxer 65 that did it for me. Sadly had to say goodbye to it this year after 25 years to free up space, but I'm happy to still have a Trace amp in my collection in the shape of my Elf head.

I use a Donner DT Deluxe (not sure there's anything particularly "deluxe about it though...) because it was cheap and does the job.

Another convert here. When I was looking for my first post-Marshall Super Bass amp (sob) I never really considered them and thought I should by an Ampeg because that's what bass players do. Then @merton lent me his ABM500 and I never looked back. When it failed on me on stage (it was quite old, mind) Dave at Ashdown was really friendly to speak to about what the problem might be. Now I'm loving my ABM600, albeit my little Elf might give it some competition for smaller gigs!

I'm also torn between a P and a Sire J-style. I've been using my V7 for rehearsals and gigs for about the last six months, but using my P for home practice. I need to get the P back out into the wild again. When (if) I follow through with my plan to get a Sadowsky MX at Christmas, replacing the V7, I can see the P getting pushed to one side again so I should probably get on it!

Go get it! Maybe you can assuage Mrs msb by suggesting you may sell one of your other cabs to make room. I'm not saying you actually do sell one, just that you suggest you might...
