Im beginning to think i may need to try another MiBass 550. I had one briefly but it didn't stand up to the ABM... maybe i should revisit...
I originally bought an old UK built EB 150 1x15 combo 6 years ago and really liked the sound (still have it and still like it). The ABM gets the same sound but with more grunt and the MiBass is very similiar with really versatile EQ (I think Ashdown call it semi parametric). There's almost a compressed quality to the sound (although there is no onboard compressor) which makes it really punchy and so far I'm very happy with it. I'll be playing wiith a loud rock/blues band at the weekend so will see how it gets on but I'm sure it will sound great (and it's insanely light too which is a bonus).

I just didn't like the sound of my TC Classic 450. It sounded as if there was a big frequency gap where the low mid should be which meant it just didn't have any punch. I sold it and got an Ashdown ABM which sounds great. I've just bought an Ashdown MiBass which is 550 watts and only 5lbs in weight. It's loud and has loads of punch and sounds even better than my ABM. I would definitely recommend it.

Sound is very subjective. Some people love the super Hi Fi sound you can get from digital amps and others love a bit of grit in their sound. I've bought and sold four amps in the last 18 months looking for the sound and portability I wanted and I think I've found it now with the Ashdown MiBass I've just bought. Two of the four amps I had were fitted with valves in the preamp and two weren't. If you're going for a rocky sound or you're planning on playing Stranglers or Motorhead covers turning up the gain and getting a distorted sound may come in useful for you but if you're not it's probably a bit pointless. I certainly wouldn't pay extra for a valve preamp.

Songs you wish you played live but have never done
gjones replied to Chrismanbass's topic in General Discussion
I'd love to play 'Hit me with your rhythm stick' but I've never been in the kind of covers band that would have played it. I did a dep job once and I got to play 'Black night' by Deep Purple which was definitely one of the songs on my bucket list. -
I can beat you all on timescales - 17 weeks AND still waiting !!! It had better be worth it........
Bummer!

Fender P-Bass Special FSR Seafoam Green in Merchant City Music
gjones replied to merello's topic in Bass Guitars
This Sir is a travesty! Only Jazz basses are allowed to be seafoam green. -
If the Geddy was set up properly you would notice that the neck is the thinnest neck Fender make. Whether that's a good or a bad thing depends on your preference. The pickups on the Geddy are vintage US built ones which can sound a bit thin when on the Geddy because the very thin maple neck does affect the sound (I know as I have a Geddy neck on my Jazz at the moment fitted with DiMarzio 123 pickups which sound anything but thin when teamed up wiith a rosewood neck). Of course as Squiers get better and better people are asking this question more and more i.e. are we getting any more value for our money when we buy a Fender instead of a Squier or are we just paying for the Fender name? Good question!

Change the tuning on your bass. I recommend F# Eb C A. Then try to play those old boring licks of yours in the right key...........that'll get the old grey matter working overtime.

Bought Stevie's MiBass a great price and very nice it is too. A total gent.

Have just played first gig with my new (preloved) MiBass and it sounded great. I was worried it wouldn't have the grunt I wanted but it has plenty of volume. It has a very punchy sound almost like it's compressed. I much prefer the sound of the MIBass to my old TC Classic 450. I may have my Ashdown ABM up for sale soon at this rate.

Wecome. Those Silver series Squiers Jazzes were nice basses. I have one still.

Donny came and picked up my TC electronic 2x12 last weekend. Nice guy, easy transaction, money on the nail. Buy/sell with confidence.

Well this may be a bit controversial but I put a set of Rotosound swing bass strings on my Jazz and they sound really nice and fat and old school. They're low tension too which makes them easy to play. I've tried DR HI Beams and ernie ball slinkys over the last few years but not used rotos for a while. You do usually need to break them in over a couple of gigs first but try them .......you may like them.

If your're doing festivals with multiple bands the backline will generally be provided. Best to confirm this before you head off to the continent though.

I remember auditioning a guitarist for the band I was in. He came in, the band played a few songs, he played blindingly fast lead guitar over the top of them ..............so far so fantastic!. I then decided I'd teach him some of the chords so he could play rhythm. I said, 'This song starts in E' He said, 'what?' I said, 'Just play an open E chord' He said, 'How do you play that?' He'd spent the last, however many years, learning every Steve Vai solo know to man but couldn't play an open E? He didn't get the job.
How long did Alex give for a delivery time? (I was very fortunate, he had the Compact in stock and completed the Midget in time for me to pick it all up.)
It was 7th of March that I had an email chat with him. Didn't mention timescale but assumed about a month for delivery. He's had problems with his new CNC machine it seems. He'll have quite a backlog I'm sure and will be having to deal with more impatient customers than me.

Gayle Ann Dorsey usually uses a Stringray but for her latest tour with Lenny Kravitz (who's pretty funky/rocky) she's using a Jazz. So it shows you can get the kind of sound you want from your present set up. BUT in my opinion a Stingray with the treble turned down will really hit the spot.

Realised that after about a year of chopping and changing pickups and necks that I had enough bits and pieces left to make a WHOLE NEW JAZZ BASS!!!! This is it. It's parts comprise of; pickups and controls from a 1994 Japanese Squier (really nice deep vintage sound). a neck from a Fender Classic 60's Jazz with vintage tuners (they use this one for the roadworns too) a body and bridge from a VM Squire (really nice grain) And a vintage type scratchplate from ebay The combination of those ingredients really works and It sounds great and looks lovely.
Whoop! Compact and Midget order placed! Damn you 2 month waiting time!
I've waited a very long........ two months and 14 days. So far. Production problems it seems. Wonder if I'll get a discount?

Why bother taking a photo of it in the first place. He could have used a photo of a cloud or the inside of his lens cap.

The Japanese fenders are usually very high quality. I've owned 4 of them and they were all brilliant. You'll both be very happy I'm sure.

Do you consider yourself an "expert" bass player?

Sometimes you have to blow yer own trumpet.
