1.
i've been playing two months, never live, and i've already found this to be true. Talking to a violinist, mentioned I'm learning double bass, was an instant success.
I'm so outraged by the cheapening of this majestic instrument to status of a babe attracting prop that even though I only got mine yesterday, I'm taking it back to the shop today. To get another one!!!! I totally noticed the effect on people on the way home with it for the first time yesterday and was well chuffed at the future potential!
2.
Hi. My friend Rick may be able to help you. He lives near Glasgow and is a freelance bass player - he hires out one of his basses. On one occasion to Gary Peacock. His email is [email protected] I hope this is useful for you. Good luck. Marc
Thanks Marc, will drop him a line.
3.
Mev Taylors in Edinburgh used to do a rental scheme that was not too expensive, but only with the entry level instruments. I'm not sure whether they still do it though. Edit; yes they do - link Here
Thanks - that could be just the ticket. No way I'd be able to justify something mega expensive anyway!
4. Was wondering if anyone knows of DB hire in Scotland? There is one place that charges £300/week but that is a tad ridiculous. Planning to phone Thwaites to see if they'll hire by post. Else I suppose buying one is the next most logical option (ignoring borrow and steal!)! Ideally I'd like a bit more time on target before buying - or will that not really matter too much?
5. Cool - sounds like a fab lesson at your end. Had an ace session here too- Jennnifer was really lovely and also generous with her time. We covered EB for a start, including a bit of a listen to some band rehearsal tapes. I've got some great tips on fingering and metronome homework. Then the big beasty itself! It felt better than I had dared hope - totally ignoring the fact that intonation wasn't even on my menu - it felt great to pluck those big strings. The arm position is easier seated but I want to play standing so that'll need some development. I have to get my brain around the left hand fingering (and everything else!), but basically, I find I am rather seduced by the double bass. Going to sleep on the hire/buy decision - probably will depend on whether I even *can* organise a hire in Glasgow.
6. Just got this in from Andy last week.... only a few pages in so haven't noticed the lexical tic (yet!)
7. Skill swap is good idea - *if* you can make the pairing, something that using money as an exchange medium lets you skip over. But, hey ho, if anyone round here wants to learn electronics in return for things musical, fire away!
8. slightly OT, but for recording rehearsals (not gigs obviously) the iphone 4 voice memo app does a better job to my ears than microphone and laptop I first tried (probably got better AGC)....
9. Me too -I've got my first lesson (introduction really) on Thursday with Endorka/Jennifer. Unlike you though, I've never even touched one, let alone gigged with it! Very excited though. Thankfully I've got band practice the night before which should shake off the christmas cobwebs on the EB after a few weeks away in the other half of the world with nary a thick string in sight (just took the mandolin on the plane this time, but it had to go in the hold). Let us know how the session goes.... I leave the splits to you - I suspect it is a bit further on in the book "progressive gynmastics for musicians" than I have got to! T
10. Digging up a 3-4 month old thread here... ...but I just recalled at a pub gig last year when this thread was actually active, that the double bassist from the other band used my Ashdown MAG C115-300 EVO II + MAG 210 extension cabinet that I use with my electric, and then reckoned he liked the sound better than from his dedicated DB combo (the brand/model of which I never paid any attention to, sorry!) I'm presuming it came down to having a larger surface area with my three drivers (15''+2x10'') in total as compared to his one (12''), but thought someone might benefit from knowing at least one DB player enjoyed using something they probably wouldn't otherwise consider.... mighty nice chap too. Cheers T
11. Got a work thing on the 13th, but might just make it along afterwards....will say hi if I do.
12. Here's my first recording on bass, but since it was made last week I'm going to claim it doubles as both my earliest and most recent. It's our very own alt southern rock Christmas number - Enjoy ;-)
13. Heyup We're putting on a night at the 13th Note on Sept 12 and have a support slot available. We're Mr Fog, alt southern rock, with support from Paul Sneddon (solo acoustic). We're looking for a band that will bring a crowd and is near enough our general musical area so as not drive ours away :-). Drop me a PM if you're potentially interested... Cheers Tim

Delete now.

nice one - I'm up for coming along. Will PM.
15. Man, anyone having problems along these lines will get a laugh (and maybe even some tips) out of reading Bandalism. It has a multichoice test in it to determine you and your bandmates' "type" - I thought they were going to be rubbish as most "self tests" are but it ended up being a very amusing hour in borders - couldn't put it down. It is quite tongue in cheek though - one of the questions was something like (although I have totally messed it up) What do you like to do on a saturday morning before a gig? a. destroy stuff down in the workshop (drummer) b. post bills for the gig, frantically debate finer points of the lyrics and spend the afternoon rearranging them (lead singer) c. post bills for the gig, frantically debate finer points of the riffs, and spend the afternoon practicing them (g*tard) d. go shopping with your girlfriend and enjoy a nice relaxing coffee (bass) (Apologies for providing amplification to a stereotype that can be dispelled by one look at the BC'ers video thread!). Cheers T
16. Damn that is one sexy bass! <sits back to avoid drooling on the keyboard...>
17. I had to change arms a few times - but nothing that a lifetime of pushing a computer keyboard hadn't prepared me for though. Thanks for the emergency rain cover - very handy!

Feedback for ~tl

Just bought a wee amp off of Tom. We know each other in the real world as it turns out - lovely guy, very easy to deal with as always! Thanks for the tea and chat (and the plastic strap locks)! Cheers Tim
19. hehe thanks for the tea, lovely wee amp and chat. It's cool when BC and the real world meet .... :-)
20. Thanks for a nice cup of tea and a chat - and the lovely wee amp. Cheers Tim
21. aw shucks! That drink is a definite :-) Thanks again for a sweet bass (and well done musicman20 for finding it in the first place!). Cheers Tim
22. Just bought a Fender precision 62 RI 1996 MIJ from Nigel. He was an absolute pleasure to deal with, wouldn't take a penny more for the postage than what he originally estimated (even though it cost more) and went as far as refunding the extra cash I tried to stick in his account! He patiently answered all my questions - my first transaction on BC - and first decent bass (so I had some silly questions about strings etc). He got it in the post sooner than expected, well wrapped, and delivered to me in record time. He even offered to try to meet me to hand it over when I was making a flying visit to London on Thursday but that turned out not to be practical at my end - but much appreciated. She is a beautiful bass, in amazing condition and just as described. Very happy - thanks a million Nigel. Enjoy that new Jazz of yours! Cheers Tim
23. ooohhhh - it has arrived - beautiful! Could hardly put it down to write this. Time to find that feedback thread and say nice things!
