1. Seeing as fatback has the bassmax option covered, here's an alternative: I've got a rather nice Shadow SH950 doing nothing that you can have for £70 posted (UK) and same deal on refund minus postage if you don't like it and post it back to me. It has two elements, one for each side of the bridge. I'm now running a K+K golden trinity (bassmax plus microphone), although was toying with the idea of replacing the single element bassmax in that with this shadow SH950 but haven't yet .... the wiring on the golden trinity is so nicely done I haven't had the heart to cut it up! Bought it for £80 (http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=129716&hl=baboom), gigged it a few times but fairly tame gig environment. The fancy velcro stuff for sticking onto the tailpiece has lost most of its glue although it stuck just well enough on mine it might need a helping hand with some double sided tape by now.
2. At first glance, in the second photo, I thought your fireplace had been replaced with a cartoon-massive bass combo... but alas no.
3. Had my first gig with the silver slaps at the free fringe, Edinburgh, in the Phoenix Bar, Sunday night. Unfortunately, my iphone did that classic trick of being unable to play the voice memo I had recorded so no sample is available. Nonetheless I really enjoyed the strings. I also rescued my bow from my old flat and had a shot at arco in the house. It was a lot of fun (I even had a lapsed grade 8 cellist helping out) but as I cannot compare to other strings I shall not hazard an opinion other than that I thought the tone sounded pretty alright when I managed to get the bowing approximately right.
4.
Hi, Being brand new to the world of double basses, I am looking for a good quality, entry level/student bass which would be suitable for gigging (playing jazz) once I get up to speed. Preferably as low cost as possible without it sounding/looking/feeling like a cheap bass. I'd be interested to hear from anyone in Glasgow or surrounding areas who is selling a double bass which might be suitable... Thanks
Just a thought - Try Mev Taylors in Edinburgh, they do a hire-maybe-buy-it-later scheme. £150 for 4months, 15% discount on the remaining balance if you choose to buy. Typically a stentor 1950, which you can try on the Glasgow violin shop cos they've got one in stock ATM. Or you could pop round and see mine, charing cross/kelvingrove, although I've since upgraded the strings. Cheers Tim
5. Wow, informative stuff. Thanks for the super quick responses Daf and Paul. As to why I went for these, it is a bit of both. One of things that attracted me to the silver slaps was the generally positive response in reviews and that people thought they were a good all-rounder, i.e. in addition to working well for slap you could play pizz and I saw someone even claim arco was acceptable. Seemed like a good bet for someone still working out their preferences. The stuff I'm playing benefits from a bit of slap here and there. Also, I've been keeping an eye on my wrists and having low tension strings seemed like a bit of a no-brainer to help avoid hurting them (in addition to sorting technique etc). I've got a three-gigs-in-three-days weekend coming up mid sept, so for me at this early stage, that is a lot of playing in quick succession and it seemed like it was worth making the jump to strings that would suit the style of music better and be easier on the body. Cheers Tim
6. Just fired on some silver slaps (well, the violin shop did) and am loving them. They replaced metal flats that came with the bass. Two queries 1. The D string is a bit more yellow than the others - any particular reason? 2. How long does it take to settle down the tuning. It's getting better after three hours jamming at a local acoustic session.
7.
I've no idea if it was "technically" any good, but I enjoyed it regardless Nice work!
sounds good to me :-)
8. I'm potentially interested in the preamp (unless TNIT needs it for the pickup of course!) - but couldn't figure out which model it was? Maybe I was just being daft with google...
9. Sold my wee A35 amp to Steve. He arranged the courier which made life easy. Really nice to deal with.
10. It seems like a fair few people are contemplating taking up DB so I figured they might like to hear where I've got to so far after a few months of learning - a kind of an expectation calibration exercise I guess. Although it will be pretty obvious that after just a few months of learning the DB that EVERYTHING needs improvement :-) For all that though, I was well pleased with things (admittedly my goal for evening was just to turn up and give it a go!), really enjoyed the night, and had nothing but positive comments from the crowd afterwards. Maybe it was the three-piece suit, string tie and hat that did it :-D ?! 11.
I think a problem for most of us who are looking at going down this route for the first time is that we are scared of being a total tool when pretending to know what to look for in a double bass.
Was in your shoes earlier in the year. Finding a hire-now-maybe-buy-it-later scheme was a bit of mind-settler for me - I figured it would give me time to try it out and also get second opinions, all the while knowing that the downside of a bad choice would be limited to the initial hire cost. That, and if I wanted to try out other DB that were on sale, I'd have just that tiny little bit of experience to help out. Human nature being what it is, I've taken a shine to the one I hired anyway.... I reckon it sounds better than another example of the same model I tried in another shop too.
12. Man that timing had to suck! Glad things sorted :-)
13. Thanks for the interest guys. Apols was a bit slow getting back to you all - been running in all directions. This is now sold pending payment.
14. Thanks Mike, Clarky, pleasure to deal with you both :-)
15. Just bought a SH950 DB pickup off Clarky - it was the double version of the single that I had just bought at the local store. He was super quick to get back to me on a saturday, patiently put up with me heading off to the store and sorting the refund on my original purchase before I sent payment to him, and then he spent what sounded like a not-insignificant portion of the afternoon dodging about looking for a postbox that would be cleared first thing Monday morning, so I'd have time to install it before a gig tomorrow night. Top stuff! The pickup arrived this morning so was well pleased and looking forward to getting the bridge filed and them installed :-) It was a real pleasure to deal with him - and looking at this thread I am certainly not the only one! Thanks again!
16. This is a Spear RFB-100 for £65 inc UK P&P. It is a great starter bass, although a bit buzzy higher up the fret board. Got me through my first three or four practices with a bluegrass band 18 months ago before buying a nice Fender P. Having said that, I really like the see through wine coloured varnish, and the figuring in the neck is pretty nice for a guitar at this end of the market. With the right tweaking I reckon this would be a fair bit of bass for the money, I just haven't managed to make it play like a £400 bass yet ;-), but no surprises there since I bought it for £120 I guess. I paid £120 for it new from CC music in Glasgow, including a thinly padded gig bag. It is not going to get used now that I'm focusing on the DB so it may as well go to a new home. Because it is not perfect due to a bit of fret buzz, I figure this is the sort of price I'd be happy to pay for this sort of performance, over the net sight unseen / sound unheard. I haven't got a hard case to post it in, but am planning on popping down to the guitar store to get a standard cardboard shipping box and pack it out best I can, using the gig bag as well if possible. Any questions, fire away. If anyone local wants it, give me a shout. I'm reckoning on £15 - 20 postage so call it £45 for collection from my place. Cheers Tim p.s. the clear plastic shipping film on the pickguard is still on, as is the quality control sticker. It's come away a bit in places and you can see that in the photos - I just never removed it, thinking it would keep the pickguard pristine.
17.
and sold. Thanks Tim/Baboom!
Ta also for the pointer to Gareth for advice - just Pm'd him :-)
18.
Awesome, thanks for the speedy reply! I'll pop down to the shop shortly and see if they'll accept a return, then I'll txt on the number you left on the voicemail. It'll be a bank transfer and I'm leaning towards jiffy bag - but I'll confirm when I know about the return ;-)
The shop gracefully received my return - poor things, online competition must be tough, especially from BCers network of excellence! I bought an ultra mute from them at the same time though, made me feel a bit better :-) Excited about getting this in the post :-) If anyone has any suggestions about pre-amps fire away.... I was thinking of using my ODB-3 (1MOhm input impedance) if the worst case happens and the PA only has mic inputs at 600Ohm.
19.
Hi there, I left a messgae on your mobile voice mail. Can post this afternoon in jiffy bag or, if you want it in box, can post at post office on Monday. Either way should be with by Wednesday unless it snows or the Royal Mail goes on strike! Paypal gift or bank transfer fine if you want to go ahead.
Awesome, thanks for the speedy reply! 20.
Sorry 'bout that! So anyone fancy one of these good quality piezo pickups at roughly a third less than new price (sorry to rub in, Baboom)?
Erm, have gig wednesday, but am thinking about popping the 951 back so I can buy your 950 - will pm!
21.
I've done quite a lot of this. I always use a thin metal file. The advantage is that it's a rigid piece of steel that gives you a good chance of getting a nice parallel slot. Put the bass on its back and cover the top with a towel.
Cool - thanks!
22. I've just picked up a shadow SH951 single pickup from the violin store here in Glasgow (else would have nabbed the SH950 for sale here). Anyways, the gap between the wing and main bit of the bridge is too small to accommodate it without modification so I wondered if anyone had any insight into whether I'd be more likely to have success sticking on the G string side or the E string side? Since it is only a 50:50 call anyway, I was going to go for the G string side because when I put my clip-on tuner there it gets a decent signal from A, D, G but a patchy one from E string, so figured if I was going to lose anything it was better to be the lower tones.... and since it also gets a signal from the main bit of the bridge too (each side of the pickup is sensitive, apparently?) I figured enough E string vibration would get to it one way or another. Also, has any one got suggestions on the best tooling for removing about 2mm of bridge wing material? I was thinking sandpaper glued onto a shim to make a sanding stick?? Cheers Tim
