They are fantastic and not a one trick pony that some people think they are. If i had to to take just one bass to a gig it would be my ray. I checked out the new Ray 34 bass at the Mansons guitar show last month. It's almost half the price of a new full on stingray. There are a couple of basses in that range. Check them out. Me & mate (who also owns a ray) both thought it was brilliant. We couldn't tell where they made the savings.

Fire by Kasabian. Never been too sure about them in the past, but this is fun, quite easy to play and damn catchy. Good rhythm in the beginning of chorus & then get those octaves going at the end of the chorus!

I have had 2 MM Stingrays and both have had dead spots. On my current one I have started using a fat finger on the headstock to increase the mass which improved things slightly. I have also tightened the truss rod which helped quite a bit. I also use an Ashdown dual band compressor which helps. The G string will always feel quieter, although when playing through a PA it sounds fine. On my 80's Charvel there is no problem anywhere. These basses are loud, sustain for ever and are built like tanks. If I had more room in the band van and strung it more often with fresh strings I would use it on some songs where I play on the mid to higher part of the G string just ot get over the issue.

I attended the Masons guitar show in Exeter the other week. On the Saturday afternoon Guy Prat was doing a Q&A session. Afterwards he was signing copies of his book 'My Bass and other animals' at the Mansons stand. I bought a copy and have already read it, it's great and I would recommend it. There weren't that many people around and Guy had plenty of time on his hands before his stand up show later that evening in Exeter so a group of us were chatting with him and had the opportunity to not just admire Besty, his famous 64 Jazz Bass that he bought of John Entwhistle, but play it and take some photo's. It was not plugged in, but felt great. It was a true privilege to play the bass that has featured on numerous famous recordings and talk to to Guy. I will not bore you with lists of songs it and he have featured on as you can read about that elsewhere. Just admire the bass. [attachment=35743:Betsy.JPG]

I have had my Trace Series 6 AH200 GP12 Head for years now. I usually use the 12 band graphic to get my sound, but have recently gone to the mid pre-shape which sounds the dogs dangly bits with my 2 band MM stingray 4. So, do you use the mid pre-shape or graphic? If the graphic (7 or 12 band) then what eq settings.

The design is a bit flimsy here considering how much use it can get. Doesn't stop it working though.

Slap has it's place and always will, especially with Flea carrying the torch. I can slap but have hardly use it in band songs (We don't do funk or Flea). I'd rather pop some octaves with my fingers. If you want a quick slap section you may need to tweek your Eq mid song which isn't always easy. What about Chris Wolstenhome of Muse slapping in their new single Undisclosed Desires?

I've got the cd Mk2 version which is the latest one. I love it and use it all the time to practice. I'm sure the mp3 is good as well. I suppose it depends on how you store and listen to your music for practicing. I have ended up burning loads of cd's with songs to play along with as my music room is separate to my living room, so the mp3 would be good if I was too upgrade. The features are very good and I particulary like the bass cut when you play along as it's too much with the original bass track playing. The tempo change is great for progressively learning harder songs. The key change saves detuning for those occasional songs. It will also do both at the same time The loop facility has come in handy. The Eq is needed to get a good tone and some of the effects (chorus especially) are ok if you don't want to plug any pedals in. It really is an all in one bit of kit for home practice, with a tuner and a metronome as well. I use it for when I'm teaching as well. and can make cd's of songs with the bass cut and slower versions for my students. It's already paid for it's self. Go and get one, whichever one it is.

It's very similar to the Trace one, and made by the guys from Trace who set up Ashdown. It's part of my live set up now and I leave it on one setting to subtlety tweek my sound.
