1. This has got to be something with lots of scope for dramatically changing the way the whole bass resonates? If the neck is supposed to be solidly in the pocket, and snug against the surface of the body, surely sticking bits of card/plastic/wood or whatever between two must be undesirable. But I've never heard of anyone recutting the pocket, or neck, so why don't luthiers do this instead of shimming? Curious really.
2. Thomastik Jazz flats are available at Thomann for 42 euros. So if you're buying something else from them and are paying shipping anyway, thats an option
3. On Gumtree - you don't see many of these so thought someone might be interested. https://www.gumtree.com/p/guitar-instrument/left-hand-thunder-iii-westone-electric-bass-guitar/1256783894
4. Martin Sims is advertising custom necks now too. I noticed last time I was eying up pickups-that-I-cant-afford.
5. I bought an apple red one about 6 weeks ago, really happy with it overall. The balance is slightly more towards the neck than I'd experienced before, but you get used to it. The sound really is very good indee. In fact it delivers some of the most extreme tone variations I've ever heard. Quality of finish on the neck is just superb. I don't know how the necks vary, if at all, but mine is a very nice slim yet solid feeling thing - really nice to play. Best of luck with the sale, everyone should try one of these.
6. All the time he is enjoying trying and wants to continue, I'd say carry on teaching him. I spend weeks apparently getting worse, then suddenly find I can do things. Most importantly I don't really care that I'm crap because I enjoy practising. Calms me down a bit.
7. I probably don't have 30 years left though...... I am working on this slowly and building up and making progress, but what's worrying me is that I can't feel the notes inside the rhythm at the correct speed, even when I happen to lock it in correctly by blind chance.
8. So, I'm old, but really enjoying starting to learn bass properly. I have no illusions about ever getting to play in a band again, so I am doing my grades instead, and have just started on Trinity G4. I'm trying to play Riff Raff, which is one of the technical grade pieces. Its 197BPM or so, though its pretty simple, and also one of my favourite songs. I'm trying to play quavers on one note only at the start, with some semblance of feel for time and dynamics. But it really just feels like I'm making random ballistic attacks on the string. Its really only when its about half speed that I have any sense that I can feel the pulse properly, and have any control Am I really going to get to double the speed and feel like I have control? It feels like my nerves just don't fire quickly enough to have the slightest chance.
9.
Older Ibanez BTB basses come down into your price range sometimes.
There's one on ebay at the moment.
10.
Surely the next natural step to this discussion is "Bands you do like, which have a member you don't like." Trickier, but i'm sure they exist. 11. Its your location. I'm just down the road from you in Horncastle - nothing I've ever listed anywhere as collection only has ever sold. Which is why my life is full of low value heavy things.
12. Just to say that if you are buying one of the older TEs, then unless you know the service history, I think you are going to find the performance a bit variable. Its also going to be very hard to tell by looking at the external condition. I have a 715 combo which is absolutely mint externally, but which sounds nothing like how I remember them - flat, dull, lifeless, crackly and pretty uninspiring all round. I'm sure a decent service and reservoir caps change would transform it, so budget for a service as well.
13. This could end very badly for what sounds like a pretty small saving to me.
14.
An old Trace has a certain 'cool' factor that very few modern amps can get near to. Unfortunately for your daughter, they also have a certain 'heavier than the factory they were built in' factor too, so unless she's either a weightlifter or dating one they may be impractical, especially with the newer breed of superlight amps now on the market. A
Yes. But I think we all know who'll end up carting the amp about.
15. As someone who bought a 3/4 scale, I'd recommend a 1/2 scale if you can find one.
16. I have a petite 10 year old daughter as well. She has an Ibanez Mikro which sounds good but which is still too big for her TBH. The Mikro is about the size of a standard guitar. Re amps, if she's like my daughter she'll prefer a beaten up second hand 80s trace elliot combo rather than something new.
17. I mostly play the Ibanez Micro that i bought for my daughter. Its just easier all round and doesn't sound like its missing anything to me. Needed quite a bit of work on it to get it playable though.
18. Well I'm 59 and I'm doing grade 2 next week. Started properly about 6 months ago having spent the odd ten minutes here and there for a long time.
19. I lived in Hollanden View just opposite the Princess Christian home.
20. Ha! Lived in Riding Lane for years and went to the primary school. Best of luck for the night, sorry I'm in Lincolnshire now.
21. If it can be made, Creamery can make it. He's very helpful, drop him an email.
22. Hello from near Horncastle
