New Build - Lots of Advice Going to be Needed
Mykesbass replied to Mykesbass's topic in Build Diaries
Imagine if Gibson put 2 and 2 together...and did it themselves. Shhh, don't tell 'em!! Did you see my post on the Jackson for sale - could pick up and pack for you if Herman doesn't want to.
-
New Build - Lots of Advice Going to be Needed
A3 not big enough? I'd find a local repro graphics place and see what they'd charge. Love the idea of this bass already!
I'll check my basses at home on A3 - be handy if they are that small. Glad you like the idea - I wanted an older, recognisable shape, but not a Jazz bass. -

Last year's kit build made me discover two things - I like tinkering, and I like having two distinct sounds available for my band. Unfortunately, the kit bass gives me a fabulous aggressive, punky P Bass sound - nor what I'm after in my Blues/Soul band! So, I'm taking on, with a fair bit of help with the woodwork the following: 5 string natural Grabber/Ripper shape with Nordstrand Big Singles. Passive for the time being. First bit of advice - I have pictures and dimensions courtesy of G3 on here. Is there a reasonably easy way of transforming these in to plans? Google sketch up or similar? Thanks in advance, Mike
With one of my bands we have kind of forced ourselves a niche, playing in smaller, out of town pubs to a largely older demographic. We don't go near Indie/rock/pop covers but do an eclectic mix of stuff we enjoy and is a bit more musical perhaps. We get rebooked and are repeatedly told what a refreshing change it is to hear something new. It has been hard work to get the venues - some places we have totally fallen flat - but we are now as busy as we want to be after a couple of years. Bonus is the pubs often do nice food
Used to get a similar reaction with my old band - best by far was the Eastbourne TUC club where we divided them straight down the middle being loved by half the members "so nice to hear something different, not more of that Rock & Roll" and the other half "got any Elvis?"
We are a relatively new band, so it will be interesting to see what our audience think. I've played in bands before and it's likely that the audience will tell us what they would like to hear from us as well as the songs they don't like. What I am struggling with is playing stuff like I'm a Believer, Day Dream Believer and Suspicious Minds in the same set as Hush, Vertigo and Slight Return.
Fairly standard Radio 2/Absolute Radio playlist there!! I wouldn't worry, as long as you get them into a workable set list.
It's amazing the number of people who aren't able to correctly tell you what key something is in anyway.
or don't know when the starting chord isn't the key. -
twas what i thunk, and add to that the suhr website makes no mention of doing relic finishes (but then i'm often wrong)
They refer to it as the slightly more refined Antiquing... http://www.suhr.com/guitars/Classic-Antique/
I don't like the font at all and the apostrophe pedant in me wants you to get rid of 80's, 90's and 00's and instead use 80s, 90s and 00s -
80s v 80's is really a question of style these days, and it could be argued that as it is the music of the 80's it is possessive so must have an apostrophe. What worries me more is [quoteThe songs are chosen to be a little different from most rock bands you will see on the circuit]
and then you list Sex on Fire and Summer of 69. I know writing about your own band is very difficult, but I really do think this needs a re-write. Now for the good bits - nice and clean layout, easily navigated, the decapitation didn't bother me, neither did the font choice.
I'm in Sussex, you're more than welcome to pop over and have a look at my G3 if you would like?
Cheers Dan, very kind. I'll PM you and take you up on that offer.
HI, I can probably get you some images later in the week - I can also measure and possibly trace, depending upon what you need.
That would be amazing. Just want to get a pretty close approximation of the body shape and size for now.
-
I am kicking off a very long term project to build/get built a Ripper/Grabber style bass - a Gripper I guess! I'm looking for some good, very straight on photos of the body and some dimensions (body size, not neck pocket or routs at this time). Anyone in a position to help please? Many thanks, Mike

Gregory Isaacs and Sly & Robbie should go on your list. My favourite Bob Marley is Live at the Lyceum.

Refused to gig last night - being unreasonable?
Experience or just been doing it too long etc etc... says do it properly or don't do it at all and don't waste anyone's time. My thinking would be 'what sort of show were we thinking'.... and I don't believe all gigs are good gigs. We obviously differ, but the key thing would be that the people I play with don't.
My point is it is down to what you have agreed. If the other side screws up I'd still make every effort to go ahead. I can't imagine you would have taken such a booking in the first place. -
ok... what about what the other side agreed to do...and sounds like they didn't?
I'd still want to stick to what I had agreed. I guess I have something of that "show must go on" mentality. -
Walk... have minimum standards and stick to them.
Different folks, different minimum standards. Mine would have been I've agreed a gig, I play it. -
I would guess/bet that most of the ones he actually sold commanded less than his full asking price. FWIW, I saw plenty of various brand basses priced at >$10K at NAMM this year.
I sort of understand the high end basses but how you justify those prices for an amp...
There was one at the Seattle Talkbass get-together a couple of years ago. I didn't play through it myself, but I thought it sounded pretty good, as one would hope it should for the $5K asking price. Flea used a couple of them for a brief while as well. A friend of mine looked into investing in the company but eventually thought better of it after visiting with the owner. If you do a search on "Vetchking" on Talkbass you should be able to find posts by the company principal. His posting style was rather, erm, exuberant. I was once tasked with cleaning up the huge mess that the original company created for the stores I worked for when they went out of business without any provision for honoring all those lifetime warranties. The bass amps were mostly pretty solid, but the tube guitar amps were a whole different story.
$5k wow! Puts Foderas in a whole new light. Will check out those Talk bass posts, thanks.
For a time Guitar Center also licensed the name "Acoustic USA" to a boutique builder doing extremely expensive quasi-reissues of the old iconic ones: https://www.facebook...?_fb_noscript=1 . It seems unclear if they are actually still in business, I think.
Yes, this was the interesting looking bit (very small print at the top of the website), and yes, very little sign of it being available anywhere.
