1.
i wouldn't worry about it being a badass bridge, its a straight replacement if you ever wanted to put the OE one back on, and they're nothing special.I'd buy it, if it were me.
Well I'm me, and I did buy it Bit of a rattle coming from somewhere but otherwise can't fault it. My first P!
2. I guess it could be a bitsa bass with a CIJ neck, but you could go mad worrying about that with every 2nd hand Fender you come across.
3. Any way of telling if it's not legit? The neck heel said it was CIJ but that's the only thing I know to look for.
4. Yeah, I have a spot on Japanese Jazzmaster that (apart from the stock pickups) holds it's own against any other I've tried and for 1/3 of the cost but my overall knowledge of CIJ stuff is limited. I didn't want to take the plunge only to find that the basses were made in a different factory and were all garbage. An extreme worry I know. I have no idea of the model number unfortunately but £450 on ebay seems like the lower end of the 50's/60's reissues so it seems reasonable, although the non stock components would arguably dent the resale value.
5. Hopped off the bus yesterday and saw a nice Fender P in a shop. I went in today for a look at it and it's a CIJ (forgot to make a mental note of the serial number for dating purposes), one chip to the paintwork but otherwise in excellent condition. Black body and pickguard and maple neck, pickups look like upgrades as they're Bass Lines branded and the bridge is a Badass 2 so definitely not stock. It played really nice but I didn't plug it in. They're asking £400-450 for it as it's a commission sale. Is this a reasonable amount? And how are the CIJ instruments regarded generally? Any pointers appreciated.
6. No RRP on their website (I guess it's a discontinued model) but the cheapest GS on there is £715 so £600 seems reasonable depending on the condition. I'd put that as the asking price, note you're open to offers and pick a lowest acceptable price for haggle room.
7. Greetings from someone who grew up in Chester! The bass sounds awful, like someone slapped some strings and frets onto a tree so good luck with the restoration and I look forward to seeing what it's like when you're through with it.
8. New or old? The original was a fuzz/octave up but there seems to be a new version that seems to be a more flexible overdrive.
9.
I have no time for political correctness in it's extremes, but my opinion is that using this phrase isn't acceptable. Am I offended by it? Not really, but I feel that corrupting a word that descibes mental handicaps or learning difficulties to use as a 'humorous' but ultimately derogatory term is out of order, and no more acceptable than calling someone 'spazz', or some other unintentionally cruel playground jibe. I'm sure nobody means to cause offence, but all the same I'm uncomfortable with it.
This is my take on it as well.
10.
The Andy Summers pedals that made 'that sound' were the Echoplex and Electric Mistress.
Well then, time to check ebay for a vintage Electric Mistress!
11. Sounds a little 'watery' and not as thick as a phaser to me so I'd say a chorus. With unlimited money I'd go for a vintage Boss Chorus Ensemble but that might be my love of Andy Summers talking!
12. I wired one up with some pots and caps I had lying around for my Maya Jazz. I'm not great at soldering but managed to knock it out in about an hour. Everything ordered off ebay but if someone on here can get you something cheaper then even better! 13. Yep! Vintage brand V950B 5 stringer. Weighs a ton (6 hour practices on Mondays and Tuesdays was tough going). Didn't like the active electronics so took them out and rewired it to a Jazz configuration, also stuck some Kent Armstrongs in there in place of the meh stock pickups. Was my only bass for some time and it still got use until it was replaced about 18 months ago. Recorded the first 65daysofstatic album on it but it's not made it onto a record since. Here it is in Sept '15 at a friend's wedding as part of my Bowie covers band. I'd injured my back a couple of weeks before and this beast was murder on it which is why I got a wafer thin Ibanez SR300 shortly after.
14. We got The Slow Blade from the book Dune. We overthought it for a long time and changed it to that, then found another band from down south with the same name but had no big plans for the band so kept it. Thankfully I've only had a hand in naming one other band, it's easily one of the most difficult things about playing music!
15. I aim mine at the closest corner of the neck pickup. No idea why but most of the other guitars I've played are angled more or less that way and it seemed like a good reference point.
16. I've seen a YT video of a fret puller being used (I assume this is available from anywhere that sells luthier tools) after heating the frets with a soldering iron to soften the glue holding them in. Probably worth putting some masking tape on the board first to try an avoid damage.
17. First Hella album, 'Hold Your Horse Is' is still an album I love. 2 sickeningly talented musicians. I thought there were at least 2 guitar tracks on the album for a while but it's just one guy.
18.
I had to replace the pickups in an old Columbus Jazz Bass a year or two ago and had a similar problem - the original pickups had radiused corners and the body was routed to match, the replacement pickups had squared corners and wouldn't fit... I managed to (carefully with a little heat) prise the pickups from their covers and swap them around - the pole spacing was slightly different but I managed to get 'round that with a little judicious filing to open the pole apertures allowing the new pickups to be rehoused in the original covers. It all worked out quite well and maybe this method would work for you too..?
The new pickup fits in there but it's a bit snug. It's about the right height from the strings (a little over 2mm) so it shouldn't be a problem but I'll consider getting creative with the old pickup cover if it comes to it.
A properly upgraded Maya can be an awesome thing. http://s1128.photobu...1970s%20CURRENT
Very nice! Apart from a decent setup I'm ready to go. The neck relief seemed OK but the strings are still a little high for my liking so I'm considering my options including the new bridge and filing the nut slots down as the height to the first fret isn't as low as it could be. Intonation with the 2 saddle bridge wasn't as bad as I feared, everything is pretty much in tune across the neck.
19. Out of interest, what qualifies as "premium alcohol" in the States?
20.
Gattox from Velvet Darkness ( gattox is pisstake of the word gateaux )
Thanks for the recommends, I'll give him a listen tomorrow. As an aside, I wonder if he ever met my dad. He calls our cat the Gatox, a mix of gato (Spanish for cat) and gateaux.
21. Future of the Left have some good ones, the lyrics are usually excellent as well. 22. I've heard his name before but never heard much of his stuff. Any essential albums I should check out?
23.
I prefer maple boards, I have a tele with a maple board and I have a few superstrats some maple some rosewood.
On strats, I definitely prefer maple. Personal preference but I feel like if I'm going to have a strat, it needs to have that super bright sound.
24. Wish I still had a fretless, there's been a few recording situations where I think one would have really worked. I had a nice Letts 6 string but it was far too fancy for me and I felt like a fraud playing such a nice bass so I sold it on.
