Warwick Streamer Stage 1 broad neck has the string spacing. But probably not the specific weight and budget.

I kind of thought that was what you were talking about. When you reach a certain price point the instrument is going to be good (most of the time you do get the odd lemon) and then it is mostly personal preferences. You do get people doing amazing things with a 4 string but I see what you mean so probably a 6 string would be better to have the greater tonal range (people will of course have very different opinions on this). I was always interested in Zon as well but that was in the 90s and I have never be one to buy and sell instruments to try out different things. I was lucky that what I got suited me so I just stuck with it. Warwick might not be suitable for you just to keep that in mind since it divides opinions so much. But a modern 5-6 string should do the trick (I say modern meaning not P or J basses and I mean that in the most respectful way) so I personally would seriously look at Ibanez and possibly Dingwall depending on budget. What do you mean by solos? Is that playing solos in a band setting (live) or is it solo as in you on your own? Live or at home? What is the budget? Also why 5 or 6 string? Is the 5 string with the high C or the low B? I guess you are going to get people mentioning their favorite brands. I think Ibanez would be a sound advise, good quality and not too pricy. I would always recommend Warwick because that is my preferred choice but that is just a personal choice. I studied music in the 90s which included the usual classical music and jazz and improvisation. I got an 89 Thumb 5 NT and I found it extremely good for all of this. Upper access was easy for the soloing in that area and for chords especially having 26 frets. I liked the sound and how it responded to right hand technique and I found it flexible with sound. These basses are quite marmite and split opinion but I personally love it and I still have it and gig it regularly. I do have a 6 fretless Thumb and same its great for exactly this. I have found Streamer Stage 2 5 also be good for this but as I have said this is all personal preference and has suited me and my playing style over the years but just searching on this forum shows you Warwick splits opinions and everyone has their favorite.

I have used them few times over the years and never had an issue and its always been hassle free. Hi guys, Has anyone done the transcription for Dont let go? I am doing it in my current band and I dont really have time to learn it perfectly at the moment but I could probably do good enough version of it. But the bass line is fantastic and I would really like to play it as close to the original (and I think it would actually be a great exercise) if I could so any help ideas greatly appreciated. I remember the SD pickups. Never tried them. I have 89 Thumb 6 fretless which originally was a fretted model but has an ebony board. Early Thumb necks are just amazing (if you like thinner necks) and has Barts. I think it’s the original and I love them in that bass. I have both 91 Streamer 1&2 5s both with Barts and I really like them but all these things are very subjective and personal. I remember those MVPs that must have been a killer bass. Do you still have it? My teacher had a 5st of those back in the mid 90s and it sounded so good.

I think you were right in your reply above that early Thumbs had wenge fretboard. At least my 89 5 st has wenge. I have no idea what they use these days. I prefer the old Warwicks over the new ones. Not sure about the EMGs. I cant remember if there were options to get Barts as well (maybe some other as well). Mine came with EMG and I love that tone.

I just picked up from another forum few weeks ago the GR2 cheaply. And its brilliant, there are so many switch options inside I have not even started to explore but it sounds excellent. Its a keeper for sure so I can relate to your comments on the GR.

I have never really spent much time bothering too much about gear but I have been playing Warwicks since '97. I just cant be bothered buying and selling gear just to try something and it might not work for me, too stressful. Warwicks just work so no point for me in looking other basses. I have have always though fancied to try Sadowsky or Zon but I am not going to shift my lovely Warwicks just to have a go. I dont really care about amps and cabs.

I just saw this today and since I have Rippley Fall I had to try and check if I had never noticed this. I went through an active bass, RF, amp. Fairly high volume and when pedal engaged no drop at all and no increase. I tried to put a TU3 in front just to see if the buffer would have any effect and it was the same. You must have been really unlucky to get two that did this. I know you have moved on but did you contact Jam Pedals just to see if this was normal?

I have two Thumbs both are 89 and are 5 and 6. Neck is the thinner profile and to me has always been amazing. The 5 has EMGs and I have always really liked the sound from them. The 6 I got off here maybe 10 years ago possibly 12. It’s fretless but the guy I bought it off said it had been fretted but had the change done at the Gallery. Its with Barts. I think that bass has the best tone I have heard and the neck is perfection. Obviously just my opinion. I have never had any truss rod issues with either of them (or the other two Warwicks I have). As has been covered so many times the ergonomics are not for everyone but it suits me really well. Just a final thought you should try and find the thread on the Warwick forum by Jeroen Thesseling showing I think it was 6 NT fretless Thumbs from 89-91 or there abouts. I am not into that music at all but it is impressive to see that guy in action with Obscura. Might be worth a YouTube watch to see Thumbs in action. Is the Wampler Low Blow any good? I like few of Brian's guitar pedals but I have never tried that one. And what about the 3 Leaf Audio Doom? Is that any good for what you are looking for?

That rig sounds epic. Out of curiosity what did you find lacking with the Bergs and do you know if the newer models have fixed that? Sorry for being a bit off topic but you have all the experience.

I never thought string spacing would be a problem. You would read here about people discussing different specs on basses and I never understood it and thought it was just people moaning for the sake of it. I only had my Thumb 5 for years and just played that. Later I got a Stage 2 5 with the same string spacing and never got understood this problem. Then I got a Stage 1 5 broad neck and finally I got what people meant. I did notice the difference quite a bit and how much more comfortable I was with the smaller spacing. But I just looked at it as two different things and found a way to adjust and I like both now. I would say just keep playing and you will get used to it (hopefully).

I dont know the pedals well enough and I just remember the old blue one (are there more versions??) and then there is this studio version and it looked like all the other revamped ones. So I was curious what the difference was between the old one and the studio version.

Hope I am not hijacking the thread but I noticed that EBS have revamped all the pedals. I was thinking of the Unichorus and BassIQ and same as with the Octabass is there much difference between the older models and the newer? Sorry again for straying outside of the topic

Is there a big difference between the old 2 control pedal and the new 3 control one. I am more thinking is it worth looking into the new one if there is not so much difference between the old and new pedal. Thanks

I remember the EXB series from the very early’90s and saw few death metal players using them. I love that look and when I saw this thread and realised what the RGB was I started looking for a 5 string. I have no idea why because I don’t need another bass. I did look at the spec and like what has been said before I think the SR is the more substantial instrument with build and hardware. What I would say they seem to have a different neck profile which you might want to consider. Electronics in the SR seem to offer a lot more flexibility but personally I would go for the RGB since I wanted one 30 years ago and I like PJ config.
