1.
Cheers Fran. The acid test will be when you get to play it :-)
Aside from personal settings from the previous owner / store there's not a lot that can go wrong with an USA made Fender, in facts you can buy these blindly by mail without trying them and knowing you are going to get a good instrument.
2.
Ok. I know we all know what it looks like, but it seems tradition dictates we post pics of new basses.
Yeah it is a great looker. Well done Dave!
3. Some of you would have seen this back in the day, sadly I don't have it anymore as I sold it to a happy eBay customer, An Olympic White Squier Classic Vibe, which was modded from the inside out. Original Fender reverse machine heads, bone nut, Seymour Duncan stacked humbuckers pickups, original wax cloth wiring loom and CST pots, all under the hood while the body was treated to a Moo Moo theme with adders-pink pickup covers and control knobs. Currently my proper Jazz is a Fender American Standard 2011 all original and unmodded And of for a bit of variety I have a Fiesta Red Dingwall Super J with a Precision style p/up in the neck position. Basically a Jazz bass on steroids
4. I've had all the CV models they made. The Olympic white Jazz, the Fiesta Red Precision, even the blonde natural 50's Telecaster style one. The good thing about them is that they are probably made in one of the best factories in China, the woods used are good and the built and finish are excellent for the price. However corners are cut in two areas, the pickups and wiring are cheap, and the machine heads are also substandard, they'll do but, they are not for the long run the pegs slip and don't stay in tune that well. On the other end they come with some excellent bridges, which are as close as possible to a Fender high mass bridge. And if you got a bit of cash they make a great benchmark for modding. In all of my CV's I've changed pickups / pots and wiring, as well as original reverse tuning Fender machine heads and a proper bone nut because the plastic one that they come with, it's also a bit meh! After that you've got a bass that can be on par with both American and Japanese Fenders and miles better than all those Mexican Fender put together
5. Don't like flats, tried the TI's and... meh. It's just not me, I use my amp and Tech-21 VT Bass pedal to get "that tone" and still feel the string under my fingertips and I know where I am on the fret board without looking, what happens if I put flats on? I slide stupidly all over the neck not knowing where I am, I miss frets and c*ck it all up, so no, I am not one of those people that likes to look at the left hand when I play I just look around and in front of me never on my hands. I get distracted otherwise.
6. I look at this from a different prospective. I am convinced that this is Sterling Ball (aka Big Poppa) finally giving in to the pressure and so releasing something that the majority of his devoted forum members have been asking him for years and years! If you look back, there's 100's of threads in the EBMM forum that "say when are you going to do a split P style bass?" at the risk of being slated, banned and / or ridiculed, Personally I don't care for the name on the headstock if it's a good bass as I truly expect it would be, I reckon it will do well. Their bigger challenge, in order to compete with the rest of the market share, would be the pricing of it and EBMM better think hard and well on how much to ask for these if they want to sell them because if you or me at this moment in time were in the market for a good built passive American Standard quality Fender Precision, (and I know how good these are as I've got one right here) the only deciding factor is how much do they cost when you think a Fender AM/Standard is around £1100
7.
Sadly I think EBMM may have come to the conclusion that although the Ray will always be a popular bass, the market is currently swaying towards indie bands playing passive P and J basses. The huge popularity of the P bass (yes, it has always been a popular bass, and probably the one we all associate with electric bass, but recently the whole superjazz popularity has dropped for a simple P bass) is probably something they wanted to experiment with. If the tone Is anything like the Big Al in passive mode, they could be excellent.
a big fat 100% agree! (better write ihis in your diary first time I agree to your post haha)
8. While watching a video of Namm 2016, I spotted some before unseen bass on the EBMM (Erne Ball Music Man) Stand Basically a Precision style and a P/J style and then checked on their website to see if it was an actual new range and found these 2 http://www.music-man.com/instruments/basses/caprice-bass and http://www.music-man.com/instruments/basses/cutlass-bass I must say quite a departure from their usual soapbar humbucker pickups, might be interesting to hear what they sound like no demo available on youtube as yet.

16. No one has mentioned an album that Jaco played on by Pat Metheny called Bright Size Life, it sounds like the two are sitting opposite each other taking live takes track by track, playing clean lines that interact with each over of the band backing tracks. It is one of the clearest and highest point in Jaco's career and probably Pat's too, the album concludes with one of the best tracks called Round Trip/Broadway Blues which once you hear it you will never forget it. Jaco's other great moment is his collaboration with Brian Melvin with whom he recorded two or three? albums that show a much different Jaco, not the show off drunken high on drugs Jaco but a real great bass player. I agree on what has already been mentioned i,e. his studio work with Joni Mitchell, but otherwise do check the other 2 sources I indicated.
