1.
I have been passed an exercise to do by my tutor of coming up with 4 improvisation pieces around three minor chords. Yes I know the shapes and the root notes as a starter, but as to what I can do with them, I am struggling with that.
Whenever I do exercises like that with my students it always seems to make more sense with a backing track or at least a drum beat. Have a look at Jim Dooley Drums on Youtube or I'm sure a quick search will find some others, and try and improvise through your chords along to a beat. It just gives your exercise a little bit of context =)
2. Thanks for the input guys, I think although some people have said things like not including TAB is a bit 'elitist'. From the feedback I've had all round it kind of seems that including TAB in rock/pop transcriptions will be helpful but for the jazz stuff the general consensus is no TAB. Although this will probably add to the elitist view there definitely are two very different types of players out there. The type that just want to play some tunes and the type that are really trying to learn music, not that one is better than the other but they both want different materials to learn with.
3. Liverpool based function band requires new lead singer/guitarist. Band is folk/pop/rock Mumford and Sons style covers. Line up is drums, bass, violin and we have recently lost our singer/guitarist so need a replacement. Band is still fairly new but already had lots of interest and is already signed up with major UK booking agents. Audition will be held Wednesday 9th July 2pm-6pm Liverpool City Centre. Email me for link to songs for the audition or for more details.
4. Thanks for the replies. I think I might end up uploading both, the readers really don't want TAB by the sounds of things so far and the TAB readers just want to try and get involved! I agree with most that everybody should try and read but for the more casual players I wouldn't like to exclude them =)

2X18 feedback

Just bought a pick up from Will, great communication and fast postage! Thanks Will!
6. Hey guys! I've posted the start of a transcription with TAB to see what people think of it and I'm getting pretty mixed reviews. So far everything has been TAB free, I'd really appreciate it if you guys could follow the link and join the discussion to let me know what you think! Thanks!! http://www.mattlawtonbass.com/new-ray-brown-transcription/
7. Bit of an odd request but does anyone know where I can find scores for the string parts for some Barry White tunes? Thanks!
8.
I had two vintage Rick pickups rewound by the Creamery and I'm having a couple of Hofner '64 staple pickups repaired Jaime is a good guy and the work he did on my gear was great at a very reasonable price.
I'm thinking about getting him to rewire a pickup for me, how much did it cost if you don't mind me asking? I have sent him an email (as he said there's not much point calling his noisy workshop haha!) but no reply yet. Thanks
9. I've just messaged somebody for a quote to get this repaired, I'll be in touch once I've heard!
10. Has anybody heard these pick ups before? I've just stumbled across them but they seem pretty reasonably priced for hand wound pickups! http://www.creamery-pickups.co.uk/classic-58-precision-p-bass-pickups.html
11. Hi David Have you been to the local music stores, Dawsons and the like? That's where I used to hang out when I was that age! I teach at a Liverpool guitar school and at a school in Stockport offering guitar and bass lessons. At the Liverpool school I have around 15 guitar students and there is another two guitar teachers with smilar numbers, there are ZERO bass students at that school! And at the Stockport school which is bigger, they have around 400 students in total doing mainly guitar but also drums, vocals and bass. Out of those 400 students I think there's only actually 14 bass students! So I feel you're pain, there's not many! I don't know if Stockport is a bit out of the way for what you're trying to do but I will definitely pass on any information, flyers, links or whatever else you have to my younger students if it will help at all? Cheers Matt
12. I've just given this pup a bit of googling and the verdict seems split. Some people are saying what I'm saying, and the other half of people say they absolutely love it! Maybe its just a marmite thing??
13.
That appears to be reasonably OK, as far as we can see. To cut down the possibilities, can you disconnect the pups from the circuit and connect them straight to the jack? If that sounds much better and as it really should be, then I'd suggest there may be a problem with the capacitor or its connection. In which case, reconnect the pups through the circuit and remove the capacitor and see what it sounds like.
Thanks for the replies, the Fender pots I have are 250K as well, so no point putting them in then! How would I go about bypassing the pots and connecting the pups straight to the jack? Thanks for the help, I'm pretty clueless with electronics!
14. Through the same rig I regularly use Fender Jazz, Warwick Corvette Jazzman, Warwick Fortress Fretless. All sound good! My rig is Markbass Jeff Berlin 15" combo, usually have the EQ flat, slight mid bump if I need it. This is usually ran through a Sansamp with settings from barely on at all on jazz gigs to blend all the way up for a gritty rock tone on rock gigs. And also ran through BBE optostomp compressor. Strings currently on the bass are DR Sunbeams which did seem to help a little, but not really... Have also tried Nicel and Steel D'Addario's and Rotosound. Thanks!
15. I've got a Mexican P that I picked up here a little while ago. It has a SD Basslines pup in it and I installed a wiring harness I picked up from a very nice chap on these forums. I love the sound, nice and fat and warm but I always have to have the tone rolled pretty far back or it gets a bit clicky. The problem is though that if I use it live it can be fairly muddy and struggle to cut through the mix. Should I be looking at the pick up or something else? I should probably say the bass was fitted with a varitone when I got it which I swapped straight to the new wiring harness. I do have a set of Fender pots to try in it but as I'm a lemon with a soldering iron I've been putting it off!

17. All top advice! One thing I found out quite quickly is that a 'safe' or potentially boring bass line sounds much better than getting lost in the changes or hitting a load of wrong notes. So if a tune comes up that you're not too sure on just play it safe =)
18.
Sibelius and Transcribe have been my weapons of choice for a long time. But lately I have been using Notion4 notation software. £32. There is an iPad version also available. You can import/export files between desktop and iPad. 7gig of good sounds as well. It really is very quick to get you head around. https://shop.presonu...-prods/Notion-4 iPad version https://shop.presonu...Notion-for-iPad Both stable and rock solid to run.
That looks pretty good!! Will have to give that a go! Been trying Finale Notepad this week, not too impressed...
