1. I'll take the Ron Carter book and Effortless Mastery if they're still available!
2. Thanks for all the replies! I'd be up for a DB bow try out day!!
3. Thanks for the replies! Is this the one you're talking about? http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/150386840141?_mwBanner=1 I've also found this one which has been reduced, anybody tried these? http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B005GZ2UIY/ref=mp_s_a_1_10?qid=1422117062&sr=1-10&pi=AC_SX110_SY165# This might sound like a silly question... But does the size relate to the size of the player or the bass?? So I have a 3/4 size bass, do I want a 3/4 bow or a 4/4 bow? Thanks!
4. Hi guys I'm looking for a bow to work on my intonation with at home. I have got no idea what I'm looking for! I'd prefer something cheap(ish!). Does material of the bow make much difference? Also French or German? Thanks!
5. Thanks for that mate, very helpful!
6. Been filing away and managed to get the strings to sit nice! My next noob question is how many winds roughly should I be getting on each post? I've been tuning up and the posts are getting pretty full of string and I'm still someway off pitch. Thanks for the help!
7. Thanks for the response. The strings I've taken off are quite a bit thinner than the ends of the new strings and it's the width of the slot that is stopping them going in, but I take it it's the same principal, just widen the slots?
8. Hey guys, I've just changed the strings for the first time on my new upright and the ball end of the strings aren't sitting right. The A string has pinged out a few times while I've been trying to tighten the strings too. At the min I have enough tension on to keep the bridge in place but the bass isn't up to standard tuning. The new strings are a bit chunkier than the previous and I eased the slots with a bit of sand paper to get them where they are. Do I just need to get a little file and open the slots out? Is that what's making my A string fly out too? Thanks!
9. I got my first lesson with a guy called Steve Berry who lives up in Blackburn. He was great and gave my bass a good once over, got a much better idea of what's going on now! I might still give Steve McEvoy a shout as Steve Berry was fairly pricey, although I must say it was worth it and I will be going back! I took my electric and split the lesson between upright and electric, when I guy who's played with Dave Holland is giving you advice it's usually worth listening too haha! The verdict for my upright was new strings, bridge adjustment or new bridge and probably a fingerboard shaving!
10. I've got one of her jazz phrases books, I was pretty disappointed with the look/layout when it turned up and I've never really managed to get much from it in fairness! I'll just stick to the records =)
11.
Much as TAB irritates the snob in me, I'd say that TAB would make your work open to a bigger market. That's to say more folk read TAB.
Yeah there is that... The plot thickens!
12. Thanks for the tips guys. If anyone has any good online resources for lessons that would be cool too. I've found discoverdoublebass.com but not much else apart from that?
13. Hey guys, As I'm sure some of you know, my girlfriend got me an upright for my birthday this month due to the help from some of you awesome bass chatters! First off, THANKYOU! What an epic present. Down to business! I've had a go at trying to get some basic technique together and just mainly playing arpeggios to try and work on my intonation. I really could do with seeing a good teacher for a few lessons and also to give my bass a quick once over as I think the E string seems pretty quiet, I think it might just need a new set of strings but would like a second opinion. I'm based in Liverpool city centre but don't mind travelling a bit for a good teacher! If anyone has any good recommendations please shout them out. Thanks again!
14.
The original question was whether the OP should offer transcriptions in both forms. If you want the maximum amount of people to get the benefit from them, then why not?
The main reason why not (apart from the space as has been mentioned!) is that it's quite a time consuming task for me to enter it all as notation, convert it to TAB and go through and check all the fingerings on the TAB are correct. Seen as though I run a non for profit blog I'd like to make the resources I provide as helpful for as many people as possible but I also don't have hours of free time to dedicate to things that people may not actually find that helpful. Hope that clears things up!
15. I'm already booked that day sorry mate, but if you have no joy here try posting on NW Dep Musicians on facebook, should get someone on there =)
16.
Without going too much into it I have trouble with some direct communication such as phones and Skype, but I do take those points on board. I do require a certain way of teaching, thinking about it. A lot of the time it needs to be visual. Being told something quickly often won't work for me. So I think that finding the right tutor would be a godsend. I'm in Salford/Manchester, by the way. I shall be sitting down with the sites mentioned and having a good look whilst also reading back over the advice given here. Listening to Ambient's Soundcloud page whilst I do this makes for a rather chilled out time.
I teach at Riffs Academy in Stockport and I think it's £12 (or there abouts) for 30 mins and lots of students do come fortnightly. We teach the RGT course which I find to be hugely practical. If that's not too far for you give them a call and ask for Matt!
17. Check out my site too www.mattlawtonbass.com A lot of the stuff may be a bit advanced if you're just starting out but it's all free =) sorry about the smiley Also check out MarloweDK on youtube, and finally if I ever have or do need help with anything I usually come here first! Lot's of good knowledge and if you upload a vid of something you're struggling with I'm sure people will help you out best they can.
18.
Hi all, I'm a fairly straight-ahead rock/blues electric bass player, and can fake my way through most things calling for relatively simple groove/pocket type playing, but the other night I tried playing along to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSZuwTZaTjk BB King's "Every Day I Have the Blues" - there's a lot of versions out there, but that one from "Live at the Regal" has a DB walking bassline, and try as I might I just couldn't follow it at all! Can anyone help point me to a dummies guide to walking bass which would help me figure out how the patterns work, and how I can emulate such a feel on electric bass? Thanks for any help, the apparent randomness of these DB/jazz style basslines is baking my noodle!
I've just had a quick play through it, there's lots of variations but over most of the chords he is playing quite simple patterns, try following along the chords trying the following patterns (from the mixolydian mode). Rhythm as Q Q Q E E R 3 4 #4 5 or R 8ve b7 6 5 Over the last few bars he's using different types of turn arounds too. Spend a bit of time trying to figure out one or two of the phrases he's repeating through the tune and it should start to make a bit more sense!
19. Here's one for the jazzers from the facebook Jam Of The Week group http://youtu.be/WeWHj6LkoWc And one for the rockers!
20. I also have an awful singing voice! If it's just for backing there are things you can do to help. A singer friend of mine pointed out that pitch is basically muscle memory of your vocal chords. Practice singing or humming along to scales or anything else you can find basically. I'm now at a stage where backing vocal parts that I've practised sound good (or passable at least!) and new BV's still take some time to get right.
21. Hey guys, back with more electrical problems, I'll get the hang of these wires one day! I recently swapped an SBP3 in my P bass for a Wizard Trad P (which sounds amazing by the way!) My bass used to be totally silent all the time and now I have a small buzz that appears when I'm not touching the strings. I'm pretty sure I've missed something simple in the change over but not sure what! Thanks
22. I was there too last night. Amazing gig! I was impressed of how much of a typical bass player role he took through the gig, just based on what I've seen on youtube I thought it was going to be an hour and a half slap fest. Absolutely amazing bassist!
