1. I've tried Tux Guitar and really didn't like it. I've just downloaded Finale Notepad from the link above though and that looks like it could be pretty good! I'm yet to do any serious work on it but initial signs look good!
2. Bought a few books, real nice chap, quick delivery!
3. For slowing stuff down I usually use RiffStation or Anytune. Anytune is probably the better choice but is only available for iOS type things and as I don't have a mac or ipad or does drive me a bit mad on my phone! You can check out a review of each here http://www.mattlawtonbass.com/riffstation-review/ http://www.mattlawtonbass.com/anytune-pro-review/ I do all my notating into Musescore. The biggest drawback is you can't add TAB but I'm pretty sure they're working on that now. I have used Sibelius in the past and I've got to say Sibelius is much easier to use but once you get the hang of Musescore it's fine to use. Lots of online help too. So definitely worth a go, I do still plan on upgrading to Sibelius at some point though.
4. I'll take Bach for Bass and maybe the Beatles book if you decide to split
5. I'd take the Ray Brown and Ed Friedland books, I'm not an upright player (yet!) though! Give me a shout if you don't find a buyer for the whole lot =)
6.
I have never managed to do anything but butcher this classic. Will check that out before I next have a go. Thanks!
It's a really tasteful line, go for it!
7. Alright chaps! I've been running a jazz jam night at a bar called Coda Maine in Hoylake and it had just started picking up but the bar has just shut down by the looks of things! We turned up for our gig last week and the lights were off, big pile of post behind the door. Their facebook and twitter has gone quiet and it looks like thats the end of that! So I'm looking for another bar around the Liverpool/Wirral area that would be up for hosting a jam night, any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks guys
8. Thank the other groups really cool, I've only had time to upload one so far though. Must try harder!!
9. I'm not the best reader around but I do a lot of transcriptions, one thing I find helpful when trying to notate the line you;re working on is to find which notes are falling on definite beats, like beat 1 or beat 3 and go from there. Also trying to figure out the smallest subdivision, eg 8th notes and split the whole bar into eighth notes and tidy it up later. As everyone else has said, it's not easy but it does get easier!
10. Hey guys! I launched my new EP 'The Optimist' today, it's available to stream for free and for download here on Band Camp http://mattlawton.bandcamp.com I would love to know what you think of it! Matt
11. Hey guys! Thought you might like to see my post on Sam Jones' bass line for Georgia http://ow.ly/tB29R Matt
12. I think I'm going to be heading down for one of the two days, anybody else going from Liverpool/Manchester way??
13.
Just follow the root of the chords, it'd be a very simple root maybe root 5 pattern on that type of song, nothing too complicated.
+1!
14. Loads of great articles about this (and other topics) here! http://jazzadvice.com/category/ear/
15.
A H/W diminished works because it contains the altered extensions similar as the altered or super locrian, flat 9, sharp 9, sharp 11 etc.
That would make sense! I was just wondering if it's common place? Also is there any difference between the altered mode and super locrian? I always thought they were the same thing?
16. By the way, the lick in question comes in about 2:00 on the video
17. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlRd1ph8GhQ The chords are F-7|% % % Db7#11| % % % D-7|% % % F-7...
18. Hey guys, Just trying to get some language for a 7#11 chord, first port of call had to be Canteloupe Island! So the first lick I transcribe seemed to be full of chromatic notes, on closer inspection he's basically running the C half/whole diminished scale bottom to top then keeps ascending chromatically to the #11 of the Db7#11 Can anyone shed some light on this? Is this a usual approach to this chord or does Herbie just do what he wants haha? Thanks!
19. Just stumbled across this and thought it was appropriate! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cB283JLBFuM
20. If you're getting a custom build, might be worth looking at the bridge Michael Manring uses to drop all strings in one go?
