1. They all look lovely. I'm digging the Jaguar shaped bass
2. Cheers, hopefully we'll come to some sort of agreement. They might even fix the problem, it's already been reduced. The fact that I'm leaving Bristol at the end of the week doesn't help matters though.
3. I took my bass to Waghorn Guitars in Bristol for a set up at and when putting on the new strings I supplied and they cut one of them (A) a little too short so the break angle at the nut wasn't good enough, so it rattles a bit. They've offered to pay for a replacement of the string, but I only know of one place that sells Thomastik Infeld Superalloys in Bristol(that I can walk too), and the guy on the phone wasn't sure if he could sell me a single. What do you guys think I should do if they will only sell me a pack? They seemed like they wanted to sort out the problem, but I don't know if they will pay for a new set of Thomastiks, especially as they are quite pricey. The bass is currently having some additional work done to the frets at the moment. Olie
4. Cheers, great vid. I'm trying out the single finger picking, haven't worked out the palm muting though.
5. Thanks for recommendations. It really is just for practising so my main priority is comfort, even above sound quality. As long as it doesn't sound horrible I'll be fine. Don't want to spend more than £30, preferably less. I'll be playing it through my Warwick Head which has a great pre-amp. Thanks for the Happy Birthday btw . These look quite good, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-HD215-C...6724&sr=1-4. I quite like the idea of 1 ear listening if I'm listening out for something. P.s I will also probably be using these for regular music listening.
6. Cool, I'm trying to translate it, not much of what is being said sounds too interesting though.
7. The 700 is on the GAK site. I thought we weren't supposed to get that here though.
8. The bass cellar is fine if you go n a weekday IMO. Mostly overpriced but I got a good deal there.
9.
Look at that headstock. I'm asure I've seen that logo before........
10. Cheers, I had the AKG - 44s but they broke and I didn't really like them. I imagine the model up is better though.
11. There's various models, some with J/J some with P/J, we only get 2 actually imported by Fender in this country. All Aerodyne's are made in Japan.
12. I find fatter necks more comfortable to hold but slimmer necks easier to play. With the slimmer necks it's just a matter of doing less work but with a wider neck you can really wrap you hand round it.
13. My bass is being serviced at the moment and I had nothing to do today so I've been out trying basses and thought I'd post my brief thoughts on them. 1) Fender Jaguar Bass (MIJ) First thing you notice is how lovely the neck is. It's really glossy and has a dark look to it. It plays amazingly, and sounds like a super jazz bass should do. The controls give a lot of versatility and in active mode you can get some quite powerful sounds. My only gripe with them is that you can actually turn both pickups off, although you could argue that's it's a "mute" feature, it just seems like a design flaw to me. It had a great finger style and slap tone. The construction quality was great and I can't really fault it. The fact that it was well setup in the shop might have had something to do with me liking it to be honest. For a bit over £600 it's a lovely bass. 2) Fender Aerodyne Classic Precision Bass Special (flamed maple top, MIJ) Although it does look very nice with the flamed maple top I wasn't very impressed by this one, it just seemed a bit average to me. It didn't feel too great (although that probably has a lot to do with the lack of setup). I can't say the tone was anything to rave about, maybe some better pickups would help it out, but I just wasn't getting anything I particularly liked out of it. A bit of a pity as I had high expectations, maybe the basswood doesn't work so well for it, especially at the price it's sold at. 3) Schecter 004 (Sort of Rickenbacker copy) There's a picture on the Schecter website http://media.schecterguitars.com/imgs/004_nat.jpg . First thing I noticed was how lovely the headstock looked. the rest of the bass looks good too, binding on the neck and a natural finish which could have done with just a tad more gloss. It felt good, nice medium-slim neck, comfortable to hold. Fretboard felt really flat which put me off a tad. Nice punchy sounding pickups which give a good range of modern tones. Reasonably priced at under £500, one to have a look at. 4) Line 6 Variax 5-String I can't really comment on the playability too much as I'm a 4-stringer but it felt quite good, maybe not as good as other basses that cost this much, but felt reasonably good to play. i was not bowled over by the tones here, it's a bit too much of a compromise. None of the settings sounded like a £700+ instrument, the jazz bass tones were quite good and the rest seemed just OK to me. The only use I could see for this is a covers band, anything else you'd be better off buying a higher quality instrument. To be fair though I was playing this one through a Line 6 amp which didn't seem to great. 5) Fender Aerodyne (black export model) This one played much nicer than the P-bass model but still though it was a bit overpriced for a bass that doesn't have particuarly high quality components. If you're going to have a passive P/J bass you really need a high quality J pickup, these ones on the standard aerodynes seem a bit weak. Probably worth noting that in Japan these are one of the cheapest models you can get, yet they charge a lot for them over here. You can order one from Japan for about the price of a high street MIM jazz. I give the bass guy at the Bristol Sound Control guy a big thumbs up.
14. Any cheapish headphones I can buy for practicing? Loud Practicing won't be a popular thing with my flat mates. Something like this maybe? http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tbone_hd880.htm Thanks, Olie
15. I'm sure the FMT will be fine I went around central London and couldn't even find one. I had trouble finding a Geddy Lee too.
16. I remember that I was really interested in this bass but I couldn't find it anywhere to try it, just wondering if anyone has actually played on one. Will probably pass but I think I've been bit by the jazz bass bug.
17. Good to hear mike. I must say your rendered image does look rather dashing .
18. Hey Was it one of those Mazeti basses that you bought?
