hey

Hi nik, make yourself at home.
2. Any idea where these are made? Have we found a winner of the bargain basses? Mahogany does tend to look better than in photos. Surprised it's particularly heavy, I've played Ibanez Sr500s and they are mahogony and they were light. Probably a smaller body though.
3. The KSD was about £250 or so more, I think over £700, it was out of my price range. If it was the same price I would have had some serious thinking to do. I don't think it stands out head and shoulders above the other jazz basses in the same price range available, definately worth a look though.
4. I really liked both. I remember the KSD (I tried the 70's one) playing very nicely. It had a jazz bass sound but what surprisingly powerful. I imagine it's quite similar to a marcus miller jazz. Very good neck, don't remember it being particularly heavy and would have bought one if it was a bit cheaper. The G&L is a different animal. The neck is beefier, I find this type of neck very comfortable, but perhaps not as "quick" as a jazz neck. Not sure whether you mean the tribute versions or USA but they are nearly identical basses. See my review about the G&L. Although the KSD was very nice it was a little overpriced, not much, just a bit.
5. Too bad about the custom charge. They are top of the range Fender Japan so you got it for a good price even with the customs charge.
6. Nice. That looks like a bargain for under £300. Doesn't it sound more awesome with the Dimarzios?
7. Thanks Those soundclips sound like they've been done with a compressor, something that could potentially help the sound. I'm taking the bass to be set up properly sometime this week so hopefully it'll be playing nicer. The pots don't seem like the best, so I might change them at some point in the future, it's not something that really bothers me though.
8. All about the olympic white for me
9. Thinking about it.. isn't a maple body a bit heavy?
10. Surprised I've never seen that before. Not sure if I think it's amazing or a bit crap
11. There's various precisions with Jazz necks, most of them are special or deluxe models and have a jazz pickup in the bridge position.
12. I definately wouldn't want a 43" scale bass!
13. I will be keeping my eyes on this one.
14. Just found the Tom's site and they say £45 for a full setup including fret leveling/polishing which sounds very reasonable. Last time I went they gave me a 10% student discount so hopefully I'll be able to get that again. I'll pop in after my exams are done and report back.
15. To be honest I don't think it has much resale value anyway.
16. Love what you've done to the Geddy.
17. Hi Rodders. Make yourself at home here:) Nice set of gear you have I should add. Olie
18. Thanks for the link. Think I will definately defret it just an issue of DIY or shelling out a bit of cash. The Bass Gallery site says £70, which is a lot more than doing it by myself but at least I'd be guaranteed of a pro job and it's still quite a bit cheaper than buying a new bass.
19. Someone on talkbass posted a picture of his new deluxe 5 string and it's supposedly great. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.p...ight=krazy_olie
20. Thanks, Treblerock is about a minute away so I'll pop in and ask how much they will do one for.
21. Standard but I quite the tone from playing a semitone down. I would like to try a D,G,C,F,Bb tuning on a 5 string.

Defret

I was thinking about splashing out on a cheap fretless bass, as fretless is something I want to be playing but I live off a student loan so big spending is not an option. However it occurred to me that I could just have my Ibanez GSR-200 defretted for what I imagine would be less money. Would anyone recommend for/against having this done. Are there any major disadvantages to having a defretted neck? I would go for a lined one anyway so that doesn't bother me How much would it cost? I could probably do it myself but I know I would just screw it up. Images of a hacked up fretboard spring to mind. Cheers Olie
23. Can anyone recommend a good affordable place for a set up in Bristol? I don't have a car so needs to be in walking distance (I live where all the university buildings are)? The action is a bit high and my attempts to lower it have resulted in buzz, I don't know if I need the frets sorted out, or maybe the nut. The intonation has drifted a bit too. My other options are give it to my teacher in London who doesn't do the greatest setups but won't charge me much or take it to somewhere like the Bass Gallery where I could pay a lot of money for a very good job. Olie
