1. Useful site, thanks Wish they'd have said something about the effect of bowing posture on the left hand though. That's always the problem that bugs me.
2. You'll love it. And you'll get a good service from Thomann, by all accounts. Have a ball;.
3. In the car. That's all now. But I love watching performed music on TV, especially jazz. Not much on though. I used to be able to get Mezzo, but not anymore. Wish there was a jazz satellite channel or even any kind of live music channel I could get. Can't watch youtube as the broadband here is too slow for HD, and that's most of everything worth watching.
4. Thanks for the heads up; didn't know it was back. I'll catch it tonight. Pretty hit and miss this last couple of series though. Far too many old cronies without much to say. the show used to have a unifying 'roots' type theme that made for great variety with a lot of fresh (to us) faces. Not so much now. I wonder if Jules hasn't outsourced most of the musical choices to the producers? Or maybe the researchers are more cloth-eared than they used to be?
5.
People posting on a public website getting concerned about being quoted in a magazine. And we're all hiding behind silly names anyway. Relax
This. Recycling content is as old as newspapers. Actually older, now that i think of the Old Testament. Everybody is crazy for content atm and will take it from wherever. My big beef is about quality newspapers quoting tweets. The BGM possibility opens up a whole new competitive arena for BC posters - who can get the most outrageous statements past Bluejay and into the mag. I'm going to try a secret code.
6. I'm no expert, but as far as I know neither depth nor boominess has much to do with speaker diameter. I'm not sure it's even possible to judge a speaker properly anyhow if you don't use use a high pass EQ or acoustic foam like a gramma pad. I see that Alex is promoting a new 1X10. Interesting to hear anybody's experiences with one or pair. 7Kg - unbelievable. Broke, alas.
7.
Thanks for the reply Geoff. I'm about 50/50 DB and electric, so as long as I got a cab that didn't boom I'd be happy. It doesn't have to be a super-articulate cab. I'll have a look at Aguilar and Berg. Anyone tried the Barefaced Super Midget for upright?
I use the original midget. Perfect for db and ok for electric too. Loud for a 1X12 and stupidly light. Tends to the middy, but that's easily EQd out. Doesn't like being raised up more than a couple of feet or the loss of boundary reinforcement kills the volume. For boomy stages I've got a couple of pieces of acoustic foam that solve the problem. If i were to add anything, it'd be a barefaced Compact for louder electric gigs, but I've no immediate need for that.
8. I'm guessing most people will say don't bother. I'm not sure half size is much easier to transport than 3/4 anyhow. They're all a pain in the a***. Go for 3/4 and the problem will most likely solve itself. Lots of folk on here use public transport, I think. Or try an EUB? Whichever you choose, you'll love it and wish you'd done it years ago.
9. The whole rosin business is a cause of immense frustration for the beginner. You're doing just fine and then, for no apparent reason,. you're not. I'm seeing a bit of an improvement since I started using it rarely. Is it possible to have an amount on the bow that works fine, but then transfers itself to the strings and makes things worse until you wipe it off? That might have been my problem - I was imagining it was because of too little rosin but in fact rosin was building on the string. Or something.
10. I'm going to steal Bilbo's lines now, and it's his fault. Himself and a couple of other stalwarts on here have always banged on about learning to read, and eventually I cracked and went 'oh alright then.' But I wasn't convinced that a) I could ever do it, and b. it would be much use to me. Wrong. In spite of a weird sort of notation dyslexia and nearly losing my mind, I'm pretty well getting there, although I did have to spend a year doing not much else. However, the payoff has been massive and unexpected. Not only do I get to play lines by transcriptions of my heroes (or try to), but I've learned to play never looking at the fingerboard. Now that last part I didn't expect, and I've not heard anybody mention it as a payoff. On double bass that is a tremendous benefit, but on guitar too. So there y'are. Give it a go, I say. And thanks to all on here who nagged me into it.
11. How about the Nashville Number System? Top session players relied on it. http://www.music-theory-for-musicians.com/nashville-number-system.html http://www.kyleoneal.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Intro-to-the-Nashville-Number-System.pdf
12. Well, there you go. Impeccable provenance. Doubt you'll do better than that.
13. Also motivated me to analyse what exactly it is I loathe about arco, and I finally worked it out, so thanks for that. Arco necessarily opens up the distance between the two hands, so the left hand / wrist has to change shape. That was the first part, I was losing all fluency in the left. The second part was that I was allowing too much weight onto the left thumb, making everything worse. The rest is just irritation with never being able to get the right amount of rosin going. I can cope with that. Certainly the attraction of arco is real. I'd give anythign to be able to play Bach cello concerto in G. I think reincarnation will be required.
14. Have to agree that an adjustable bridge is a boon. lets you mess about to your heart's content.
15. I guess I can use this thread to vent about how much I hate bowing and rail about how every time I go back to the bow I want to give up playing the wretched instrument altogether. Puts me in a bad mood for whole day. Phew, that's better.
16. <<< This. Description fits my Weichs perfectly. The point about unforgiving arco is spot on too.
17. Interesting and promises much more natural sounding algorithms in drum programming. http://news.sciencemag.org/brain-behavior/2015/06/secret-groovy-drumming-may-be-math
18. Great decision. As an added bonus, the teacher okaying the bass might help her general attitude towards the pupil's progress. Teachers can get frustrated by bad instruments. Best of luck to your daughter. Wish I'd started that early and with this kind of support.
19. Not much love for Gear4Music on here. Unfortunately, a poor bass would be doing your daughter no favours. Cheap usually means hard to play as well as fragile. At the kind of money you're talking about, you might find it difficult to get anything decent at all. If you can't stretch to the better sort they sell on Thomann and the like, a used one could be a bargain as suggested. For that you would need someone (her teacher?) to check it out and, and factor in a few quid for a luthier to set it up. Perfectly possible, but could take a little time. Great to see the girls taking up the bass though, so well done to her.
20. Try to get hold of a copy of this: http://artofthebow.com/ It describes a Rabbath video that's absolutely brilliant, though far too expensive. He shows how to test a bow for balance etc. in one section. As a training DVD for the bow it's inspiring. Not that it can save me from myself, but it really is good.
21.
You are all totally right and I know I have been spoilt so far. Or maybe just really lucky. Maybe it's just down to the fact that my Chadwick is not feedback prone and my bands are not that loud, so I have never had to wrestle with impossible feedback situations. If I were in your shoes I would probably do the same.
I've been lucky too, and with a loud band. But I have a KA mag as well as the Full Circle. I've never had to use it, but knowing it's there is mighty relaxing, I can tell you.
22. I'm sure mag will work for you. There's nothing worse than sound problems, especially if the setup is a big rush and you're following other bands or whatever. It's supposed to be fun.
23.
Presto Nylon Ultralights. Feel very similar to Silverslaps, good thud, not too bright... as recommended by BobVBass.
Am I understanding right that these have steel core ok for mag?
