1. Hi Everyone, I bought these Thomastiks a few days ago from Bass Direct, and they don't suit the bass that I intended them for. On my bass for less than 24 hours. The E, D, and G are cut with 2-3 wraps for a 34" fender bass, so should fit on most other basses. There was an error in the packaging and I received 2 D strings, so the A is actually on its way from Bass Direct, so you will actually get 5 strings. I figured I'd give them a try as I like the Thomastik flats so much... but they're not for me. Low tension, very balanced, easy to play. The outer wrap is quite a fine wrap compared to other round wound strings I have used, and they feel very smooth and silky to play. £30 ono delivered in the UK. Pictures if anyone wants some... Many thanks, James

3. For anyone who has this issue in the future, it was just the grill not being velcro'd down properly, due to a staple being raised and preventing the velcro from making proper contact. Take the grill off, push down the offending staple, and put back together.
4. Hi all, I've been using my rig which consists of Aguilar TH500, and DB112 and DB112NT, and it sounds great, but I've noticed that there is a slight buzzing from the DB112 when I play from a B on the A String down to the open E. I don't notice it live but I've been recording the cab a bit and I noticed it in the studio. I have tried the DB112NT and it does not do the same thing. I have turned the tweeter down and it's not that. I think it's something inside that vibrates at certain frequencies. Any help would be appreciated. James
5. Allianz are good and pay out if something happens. Just give them the approximate value and they will quote you. Endsleigh refused to pay out when someone bashed into me and my bass on the street. They said as it was 'in transit' it needed to be in a hard case. Ha! So don't go with them, they're expensive and won't help you anyhow.
6. The Aguilar Tonehammer 500 has more than enough volume for most applications, I haven't had to push mine past 9 o'clock when I've got both cabs connected. Only if I were to do a stadium gig would I think about getting more muscle, it really kicks ass with the two cabs! And it's got plenty of bottom end, but in a tight way. It amplifies my basses accurately and cleanly if I have the drive knob turned off, but I dial a bit in for my personal taste. The controls are pretty musical and it's quite hard to dial in a bad sound. I just leave them neutral most of the time.
7. If you can, try out an aguilar tonehammer 500 with their SL speakers. I have this head paired with 2 DB112 cabs ( heavier than the SL112, but small individually so easy enough to move) and I've never had such a punchy and full sounding rig. One speaker may be enough for your needs. What kind of sound are you after?
8. I'd agree with all of the MIJ suggestions. I too have a 57 reissue from the early 90s and it's awesome. Try before you buy is a must though as I've played a couple of jazz basses from this time and while they weren't made badly, the wood just wasn't very resonant.
9. Pete sold me an aguilar cab. It arrived well packaged exactly as described. Great guy to deal with. Thanks Pete!

In good working order, the only things I should point out is that the black paint on the grills seems to be coming off, but for someone more technically minded than myself, a quick go with a wire brush and some under coat and then spray would have them looking like new. They're not dented, just rubbed by the zip on my bass case. Also one of the feet is missing on the fold out legs, but it is still really stable. There a couple of small nicks on the top cab, but nothing serious, no wood showing though. They are solidly made and have been totally reliable. Rig is located until Monday night in Bath, then it will be coming with me back to London. I go between Bath and London a lot and I can easily bring it with me. I will also deliver within reasonable distance for cost of fuel. Come try it, you can see how it works with my double bass too if that's your thing... Any questions, please ask. 13. Just bought an Aguilar amp from David. Exactly as stated, no complaints. Good packaging too.
14. Well if you can find the time to drive down for the day, it's there for you to try. Free parking outside my flat.

It's so clean yet warm and full sounding, and the amount of bottom end it puts out, you won't need anything more than this no matter what you play. I've been using it to play soul and motown, and it sounds absolutely fab with my Precision bass. A lot of famous people use these heads, including my hero Pino Paladino. There are pictures around of him, look 'em up. The cab is light for a 2x12, and not too bulky, I carry it around on my own with ease. Rated at 101dB sensitivity, it gets the most out of any amplifier, and moves a lot of air. It sounds full and articulate, it does everything from thuddy old school thing to modern slap tones.... It fits nicely in the boot of my mk4 golf. Why am I selling? Because I'm going to move to Germany in a few months and I need to get my gear down to an absolute minimum. As I play a lot of double bass, I want to get a slightly smaller set up that I can use on jazz gigs, and rock out too when needed. This setup does sound amazing with double bass too I may add, but for a lot of jazz gigs it's overkill! Trades: I am interested only in a Aguilar DB 112 in Silver / Black. I will deliver within reasonable distance for fuel cost. I don't want to post the cab, as it will cost, and for the whole rig, it's worth a car journey to come and collect in person I think! But I will post the head at buyer's cost. If you have any questions, please PM me. I will get more pictures up next week, but they're in great shape. James
16. It was a slightly loose connection in a speakon lead... oops!
17. Hi, My opinion is that if you find one and play it and like it, then go for it. I have a Custom Shop 1960 Jazz relic and whilst I am not into the whole relic thing, I played it second hand in a music shop in Edinburgh in the summer just out of curiosity and just loved it, and bought it as a result. It's a really good instrument in every respect, and one that I will keep for good. However, I played a similar bass to mine, same sort of spec, just different colour, on Denmark street the other day, and it was heavier and nowhere near as resonant as mine. I think this shows that there's a fair bit of variation even in the top fenders, nothing to do with craftsmanship, but wood is wood and sometimes a neck and a body work better together than others. James
18. Hi there, Could anyone share any light on the following observation? My Epifani UL502 sometimes loses volume and intensity when I'm playing loud on a gig. It tends to be near the end of a number in the middle of a set, but doesn't last that long, and I turn the amp down a little and it sorts itself out after maybe 20 seconds. I have the gain at a good level but not clipping, and I never need to have the master volume more than about 10 o'clock, as these amps are really loud! I use it with an Epifani UL212 4 ohm cab. This problem has only had a couple of times but I want to know if there is a fault with it, or am I triggering a protection circuit of some sort? I can't believe I'm playing too loud, as it seems to have more volume to come if I wanted... Also, where would you go to get it serviced in London? Thanks, James
19. Transcribe! Is a really useful bit of software that allows you to loop and slow down (with or without changing the pitch) of a sound file. I use it for transcribing solos/basslines. This might be useful for you. I have no idea if there is a training program for what you need but I would suggest just get transcribing melody/chords/basslines, and you will get quicker at it, it's just a matter of practice, there aren't any shortcuts unfortunately. James
20. This book is full of all sorts of grooves and ideas that will keep you busy for a long time, it's a big book! I was taught by Paul (the author) and he's a great player and teacher, so I would recommend the book highly.
