1. +1 to Paul Jackson and Mike Clark. Also, Anthony Jackson / Steve Gadd
2. Jack Bruce / Ginger Baker
3. I think it does have pretty much the same effect - except with the pad engaged, changes using the gain knob will not be as extreme (I think!).
4.
My vote goes to EBS. The MicroBass II is as grownly as you like, and has loads of features.
I have one of these as well. Very happy with it. Haven't tried running it straight into a power amp yet.
5. I've got the Aguilar DB680 and the Warwick Quadruplet. I wouldn't describe the Aguilar as ballsy. Thick, warm, rich, smooth, clean and big, with a very powerful EQ section. The Warwick is not as thick or big as the Aguilar (in terms of sound) but it has a power amp valve on a dummy load in the circuit to give you the sound of power amp distortion. Different settings bring the power amp valve in and out of the circuit. It sounds fantastic clean or distorted (or somewhere in between).
6. As a fellow DB680 user I'd be interested to see the responses to this thread. But you'll probably be directed to the thread at the top which compares different preamp valves.
7. There's a thumb going secondhand in For Sale at £650.
8. I think it's a bad time of year for sales. Great prices on those basses. The Thumb at £650 looks fantastic!
9. Sounds like you're bored. Simple solution: get into a new band.
10. The dumb thing is that if you did the gig once, then the second time she'd probably pay you your normal rate (if I understand what you wrote in your first post correctly).
11. The D (octave) and D sharp won't sound at the same time on the same string. So there are just two notes playing: D and D sharp an octave up.
12. If you like playing, just play. Forget about the money. The last three paying gigs we've had each member has been paid £6, £5 and £4. Insulting? Yes. Worth it? Definitely. One more gig under the belt.
13. With some basses I do find myself thinking "why even bother having a upper horn there?". I think the singlecuts can look neater.
14. You should probably specify what you personally do: eg. singer/guitarist.
15.
ironically perhaps, they don't seem to look all that good in their suits
I wasn't going to say it.
16. For Sale: 1. Gallien-Krueger 400RB-IV - £250 (SOLD to JimBob!) 2. Hartke 2.5XL - £125 (SOLD to John) 3. Hartke 115XL - £115 (SOLD to John) Happy to split the items and sell individually for prices listed. £40 discount for anyone who buys the two cabs together. Reason for selling: to pay £300 excess on car insurance claim. Bought these items new from GAK a year ago. Gigged the Hartke cabs just four times. Very nice sounding cabs: clean, warm, smooth and punchy, ie. The Hartke Sound. The 2.5XL is a 2 x 10" with an additional 5" high-range speaker. It is bigger than your average 2 x 10 both physically and in terms of sound. The 115XL is a 1 x 15". It sounds full and deep without being dull or slow. 200W each cab @ 8ohms. 400W combined (@ 4 ohms). Loud enough for most indoor gig situations. Hartke cabs are not lightweight (2.5XL - 66lbs. and 115XL - 60lbs.) but not overly heavy either. I'd prefer cash on collection (London - although I could possibly deliver in/around London for nothing*). Should still have some of the original packaging so might be able to post (with buyer paying postage costs) and would consider taking paypal, although cash on collection/delivery in London is definitely preferred. Any questions, please PM me or reply to this thread. I have no problem with people discussing the fairness of the pricing or the quality of the gear. Thanks. *once my car is repaired (hopefully before the end of this week). EDIT: Pic now attached
17. Agree with all the points made but the things which struck me immediately were: - 1-day listings - No buyer protection offered on anything
18. I met Jon Hiseman once. I had no idea who he was, I'm ashamed to say.
19.
Unfortunaly, i am unemployed and i need some money...
You mean you're a professional musician
20. 'Cos it looks cool and gives me a low B and, more importantly, has the best slap sound there is.
21.
I could name drop just about every London-based British star-chitect
When Norman Foster walks into a meeting does everyone shout out "Norm!"?
22. Doesn't Marcus Miller use the Fafner?
23. My first bass was a Mexican Fender Jazz. It's still completely stock and has the best fingerstyle recording and direct tone of all of my basses. But I think I was just lucky.
24.
erm now i'm confused you say voltage squared but where did you get the voltage figure from, the wattage figure was 100
Wattage (Power?) X Resistance = Voltage Squared, according to the equation above. So if the Wattage is 100W and the Resistance is 8 ohms, then the Voltage Squared = 8x100 = 800. So then to get the actual voltage you have to take the square root of that figure, ie. 800. And the square root of 800 is 28.3 - capisce?
25. WAR! Huh! Good God, y'all. What Is It Good For?
