1. I was just kidding. I was going to try to "convert you" but what's the point? You've already said you don't like their music which is fair enough.
2. I emailed the guy earlier today. Unfortunately, I emailed him in English so I might not get a reply!
3. That's completely daft. I want one!
4. I was having an argument with a friend of mine about overplaying: I basically said that if the audience has come to see you widdle away, where's the harm in you widdling away?
5. Sounds like b*ll*cks to me (that they've got sloppy rhythm). They've both got good rhythm. It just sounds like there's a lot of snobbery about virtuoso musicians who haven't "come from jazz". The funny thing is that this snobbery doesn't seem to come from the jazz greats. As for the comment about Flea being a one trick pony, I just don't get what it means. Ray Brown was a one trick pony - does that make him any less of a great bass player? Who says you have to be able to play bebop, cool jazz, funk, latin, rock, gospel, blues, soul, double bass, fretless, slap, pick, chords, 4-string, 5-string, 6-string, 7-string and all combinations thereof to be any good?
6. Band sounds ok. Could be a fun little side gig to take the 4-string J out on - would just have to keep my secret slap habit secret. With things like this I always wonder why they sacked their last bass player. Didn't look good enough in a suit, perhaps?
7.
BTW everyone on this forum in London looks good in a suit. You'll have to be more specific.
8. Flea and Claypool have sloppy timing?
9.
So, a female playing a bass has a novelty value?
Nah, I think the novelty is that she looks 12. So everyone thinks she's a child prodigy. EDIT: Have to agree with SiBob about the 'Who You Know' thing. Btw, I don't want to give anyone the wrong impression - I don't think I'm as good as her. I just think there are much better bass players out there and her playing doesn't do anything for me at all.
10. No, I was just checking. Wasn't saying you were accusing me.
11.
I find them not funky enough for funk.
Really? Have you ever listened to...
But I never want to hear their songs.
Oh, nevermind.
12.
Sex shouldnt come into it, to be honest. You either like her playing or you don't, simple as.
Exactly. I don't like her playing. And I don't see where I said anything sexist - just checking though.
13.
Are there any other good female bass players?
Yeah, sh*tloads. You're going to get a whole bunch of names chucked your way now.
14.
I can't help but mention that a few of the comments in this thread are quite offensive to women
If it's me, let me know. I know I'm always rude about her playing but I hope I haven't said anything sexist.
15. There's a bit of anti-Flea snobbery because so many people who know nothing about bass hail him as 'the best'. Instead of reacting against that people should appreciate Flea for what he does actually do. And boy does he do that well. The fact that there might be better players out there doesn't make his playing any less good.
16. I can't stand her playing. But so far I'm the only person I know who feels that way. She went to Berklee, got an endorsement with Sadowsky almost immediately and got taken under Anthony Jackson's considerable wing - then he hooked her up with tours backing the likes of Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock. Then she got the Jeff Beck gig off the back of that. Am I just bitter and jealous? Probably!!! Has she got where she is because she's a girl and looks about 12? Maybe. EDIT: Like Argh said above, I don't like her tone. But I've also listened to her solo record and I've seen some clips of her 'cutting loose' at some bass masterclass - boring! I'm trying to figure out what it is I'm not getting about her playing that makes her so special. So far I can't come up with anything apart from the fact that people think she's 12. (As for the Jeff Beck/Crossroads DVD thing, I heard he asked not to be on it 'cos he wasn't happy with his playing - when he was the best thing there!) 2nd EDIT: She is getting better though - but if any of you were taking under Anthony Jackson's wing and toured with Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Jeff Beck, you'd no doubt improve too! 3rd EDIT: Yep, definitely bitter.
17. I remember when it first opened as Stepping Stone studios. Best rehearsal studio I've ever seen!
18.
rehearsals in Willesden Green
Haha, I will never understand why there's such a concentration of rehearsal studios in that part of town. I would ask you which ones you use but all the names have changed (even though nothing else has).
19.
Was it me or did there seem to be a lot of tension on that stage between them .
Same thing at Live Earth. End of the road?
20.
hey sorry but i read you gig policy, i find it quite interesting. where and when are you performing next time ? Do you mind having a bunch of french women at you next gig ? i could arrange that
I'll let you know about the next gig - any and all French women would be most welcome!
21. I own one (well, actually it might be a power distributor with circuit breaker - must check, not really sure of the difference) but I'm planning on taking my power amp out of it from now on. The manual even seems to suggest it, although it doesn't explicitly advise against using power conditioners. It seems like the two potential benefits of using a power conditioner are: 1. equipment protection, 2. improved performance. The debate seems to be about whether power conditioners can improve your equipment's performance. While not understanding the physics well enough to really make an informed decision about how it affects the rest of my equipment, I do understand the idea that the maximum amount of current that can pass through a power conditioner might be smaller the amount required by a power amp - thereby hindering the power amp's performance. And I also understand that one of the functions of a power amp is to do what ahpook describes above.
22. The first pic in my sig is a link to my band's myspace page. The second pic is a link to my band's youtube page.
23. There are three shops worth checking out on Denmark Street. Wunjo (as mentioned above): friendly staff with a quirky selection of instruments. They once let me sit there trying out 7 different bass guitars and an upright when everyone knew I had no intention of buying anything that day. Vintage & Rare: friendly staff but more importantly they have the best selection of, well, vintage and rare guitars and basses. And they'll let you try out anything regardless of how much it costs. Music Ground: friendly enough staff but more importantly they are the place to go for boutique effects/guitar amps. They'll let you try anything out too. Prices are a little too high though. So try instore and buy online. As for the Bass Cellar, their staff will let you try anything out. And they occasionally have the odd thing in stock that the Bass Centre or Gallery don't have. So again, it can be a good place for trying things out.
24. Could you give our myspace page a follow-up inspection please? Link is in the logo in my signature. Thanks!
25. Interested in the Bare Knuckle. Will PM you.
