1.
Here is my "BassAmuser" from Musikding.de and Musiker-Board.de
That's very pretty I've been looking at the kits for these - do you know of any sound samples or videos floating around? Or can you describe the sound?
2. I think you're right - I actually have the cabs at home today and I've had a good look over them. My vinyl covered TVX has a serial number 150,000 later than the TXF, and has a 'CE' mark where the TXF doesn't - double proof that it's actually the newer of the two. I bought the cabs from different sellers on t' bay, both were 'used'. It just means that my TVX must have been 'used' a whole lot more, possibly as a hockey puck by giants, or that carpet wears a hell of a lot better
3. I have one of each, in 210 flavour. The only difference is carpet / vinyl covering, my vinyl covered cab is definitely older, but I can't remember which is which, model number wise
4. Played a 3pm slot in an all day charity do this afternoon at our singers' local. He'd been drinking in there all day, and started jumping about, as is his way, but fell into the drum kit in the third song. Still feeling extremely stabby, but at the time was quite prepared to wrap something around his head, like our guitard's 4 x 12
5. Awful website though: I hate any site that plays music the instant it loads, and ones that beep when you hover over a clickable item. It's all a bit 'my first website', Grrrr
6.
I couldn't play that there's nowhere to rest my thumb.
I think I'd rest my thumb just behind the knobs, kind of on the corner of the box- y bit. I think it would feel just like it's normal home on the top of the bridge pickup on my bitza Jazz :-)
7. My personal arrangements are 2, 2x10's. Thusly, my rig looks like the 'standard' 4x10 from a couple of feet away, but is a lot easier to move about and more importantly stack in cars. Also, for financial and practical reasons my two cabs where *very* second hand when I bought them. They're both Peavey 210TVX's, one carpet covered and one vinyl. One had the name of the previous owners band spray paint stencilled across the grille, which I've sprayed back over with black, but it can still be seen from most angles. I love the fact that they have a lot of history beyond my measly 7 gig career, I love the fact that I don't care who moves them around or asks to play through them and most of all I love the fact that they cost me £60 each :-) Just my tuppence...
8. I think the only way you could make the look of a 2 x 8 x 10 rig any better, especially if your guitar peeps have 1 x 12's, would be if you yourself were slightly shorter than an 8 x 10, and wore a genuine German tank driver's helmet. This was the look my band's previous bass player perfected :-)
9.
Ok people.... next lot of opinions please... decided to get a new head first and then look at cabs after... otherwise there's too much choice Looking at this and have heard good things about it... opinions? http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/detail.asp?ID=112
Do it, get that one :-) The longer you don't decide, the harder it will be to decide - does that make any sense?
10. I've heard many stories about people having issues with Behringer stuff, but that hasn't been my experience personally. My band has a PMP5000 powered mixer and several DI boxes from the 'B', and we've never had any trouble with them. Also, our Guitard has a Behrry 4 x 12 underneath his Hiwatt head, which is a fearsome combination, and it only cost him £80 second hand. It's the good old 80:20 rule - you can get 80% of the performance for 20% of the cost. In my opinion, all the time you're playing with others in a live situation, no-one in the audience will notice that 'missing' 20.
11. Hartke LH1000, running bridged: 750 Watts @ 8 ohms, 1100 Watts @ 4 ohms As other, far wiser men have said, you match up ohm ratings with your eyes, and wattage with your ears. Don't be afraid of having an amp that can pump out more watts than your cab says it can cope with - if something starts sounding bad, turn the volume down until it's nice again.
12. I'm with Sarah: best thing I ever did was stop buying cheapo strings at £8 a set from the 'bay, and spend a reasonable amount on something decent. In my case, I chose DR High Beams. A set of new strings is a lot cheaper than an amp! When you've swapped the strings, check again how the bass sounds acoustically (i.e. not plugged in). If it sounds nice, only then start looking further along the chain.
13.
Everyone would rather coop themselves up in the Crap 'n' Bin every night.
We entered their BOTB last year. On the night we played, one of the three bands didn't show, and neither did the audience. We played our set to the other band, and vicey versey. We were declared the winners, because some of our singers family turned up :-) Never saw the '£1000' prize money though........
14. There was a thread with a very similar subject the other day, which of course I can't find now Anyways, several people recommended Manny at Sound and Image (you know, the music shop opposite Argos in Chatham?) Can't comment myself, becasue my basses are only cheapy ebay specials and I set them up
15. I have a Zoom B1, which is fairly similar I believe, and the only time I've seen this kind of wierdness was when running on batteries that were getting very low - any help?
16. Wow thanks! - I've been searching for info on this pedal and missed that forum completely :-) I really want to have at go at this now!
17.
i built a nice clone of a catalinbread SFT which does the trick....
Tell me more about this clone - your own interpretation of the design or a DIY kit or something? I really like the sounds from the various youtube clips for this pedal, and I enjoy waggling a soldering iron about :-)
18. I wear these for everything noisy now, including pushing the vacuum cleaner around at home: http://www.surefire.com/EP3-Sonic-Defenders I find that I can actually hear my bass better with them in, and when I take them out at the end of a practice or a gig, it's like nothing has happened as far as my ears are concerned. Plus I find that they stay in really well, compared to the to the etymotic ER-20's I've also tried.
19. Well, from the lofty heights of my 5th ever gig on Friday :-), in can only really repeat stuff: 1, Spare strings are an OK idea, but it's not really practical to change a string while your audience (and band!) waits, especially if you're playing a multi-band gig and your set is only 40 minutes or something. A second bass is a much better idea. My second bass is only a £50 ebay special, but it's there if needed, tuned up and ready to go. Same rules apply if your main bass has active pickups - spare batteries are fine, time spent changing them isn't. So a cheapo passive second bass is better. 2, Since the neck on my backup bass is very different to my main one, i make sure I play the entire set through on both basses the night before the gig, and then don't practice at all on the actual day, because I find that practicing on the day actually makes me more nervous! 3, Don't use alcohol to help with nerves, it doesn't do a lot for the quality of your playing. Our band has a 1 beer maximum before we go on. 4, For an evening gig, I'll eat really early, say 3:30 or 4 because I wont be able to eat nearer the time, and you don't want to get wobbly through lack of food. 5, This is the biggy - someone will make a mistake at some point, probably several points :-) When it's your time for a boo boo, DON'T PANIC and DON'T STOP PLAYING - just thump away on the root of whatever chord the band are playing until you find your place again, or failing that an open E or A or something. If you stop dead, the audience will spot that something has gone wrong - it's better to play the wrong note than nothing at all, in my opinion. 6, Try not to look at your fingers for the entire gig - check in visually with your guitard/ guitards and drummer every now and again, look at your singer in disbelief as he sings a verse over the chorus backing and if you're feeling really brave have a bit of a smile at the audience (it's taken me 5 gigs to get there though!) Just enjoy yourself!
20. Well, I quite like the bridge, although the crescent sections on either side of each saddle are a tad too chunky in my eyes. I also like the idea of a metallic top horn on the body, but not that one, lol.
21. If you dont get on with the ER20's (as I didn't), you might want to try these little fellas. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUREFIRE-EP3-SONIC-E...=item414c481472 NB this isn't the seller I bought from, but the EP3's are the model I have. Couple of quid more, but I find they fit and more importantly stay in so much better and I can walk away from a practice or gig without my ears realising anything's happened :-)
22.
Which hand?
The right one. Have you been there as well?
23. I shook hands with Maggie Philbin once - she came to our school to present prizes. I think I have out- tenuoused you all
24. Well, the way I look at this is this: if it sounds ok, then it probably is ok. I seem to remember the brothers Wooten using girlies hair bands on their respective Bass and Guitar when slapping on the 1998 Bass Day DVD. :-)
25. I say go for it - sounds like a great idea! You could also look at the E-mu USB Tracker Pre, which is a little cheaper than the focusrite offering, I've had loads of fun recording with mine (into Reaper on a PC).
