3. I have been planning to visit Bass Direct for a while now as their website shows they have a good variety of basses compared to any shops near me. Unfortunately its a 260 mile round trip so I have waited until I had another reason to be going that way and on Friday I am driving up to Scotland via the lake district and decided that an extended lunch in Warwick would be just the ticket. I have decided to treat myself to new/another bass but have no idea what I want beyond 4 strings and light and as such decided that Bass Directs range of stock would give me a good chance to try out various basses at various price points. However having read through this thread I wonder if I really need to spend my time being ignored or dictated to or just told I'm wrong or have I misinterpreted the jist of whats been said here. Is it worth warning them of my intent to visit and why or not. Ho hum I will probably go anyway but the reassurance i was expecting to find from this thread is sadly lacking
4. I will be there with a Sandburg I would like to sell and I'm really hoping there will be some examples of those Polish basses who's name I cant pronounce let alone spell Just noticed Sibob is bringing one, what a fine fellow Maruszczyk I thought that was the noise you get when you try to stop an involuntary sneeze
5. That would explain why I have not been able to find any, Thanks anyhow and GLWS
6. Sorry to hijack the thread but do you happen to know if anybody darn sarf stocks any of the Maruszczyk basses cos I would really like to try one
7. Thanks for the comments and advice guys, I have used it passive and to my ears it maintained its tonal character so no joy there. As far as weight is concerned it weighs just over 10 pound and if I could get it down to 9 i would be happy, but not much point unless I get it to sound more the way I would like it to. I haven't ever used half-wounds so no idea what to expect might be worth a punt, I tried Thomastic jazz flats on it but didn't really do it for me. I keep coming back to pickups and preamp but that could be an expensive mistake if it doesn't improve things. Ho Hum
8. I have done a fair amount of tweaking myself i.e. pickup height, neck relief, bridge height, string type, make etc over time, and just recently had a professional fret polish and complete setup done by local guy Rich from Tonefinder. Unfortunately to my ears it is more aggressive and powerful than ever partly due no doubt to the new roundwounds and also the undoing of some of my tweaks. I have two other basses an early nineties mex fender jazz with Wizard Hammer pickups which sounds best (to my ears) with well worn in stainless steel roundwounds, and a bitsa P with Nordstrand np4 pickups and Daddario Chromes which tends to be my go to bass. Tall order I know but I was hoping for suggestion on how the body can be lightened or perhaps who could help me with such a thing, and suggestions on pick ups and or preamp or again who to talk to as I really don't know what the pros and cons are for differing pre's and pups. I guess there's a problem with sound being so subjective that I would probably need to be able to try different examples to explain what I liked or not as the case may be. I bought the Sandberg with the idea that it would be a good all rounder and I believe that it is, several local players including Rich at Tonefinder think it is a really nice bass and like what it does and others are not so convinced.
9. Will that make it lighter or help the tone can it be retro fitted do I need an expert to do it for me not that it matters as I was never really into punc any way so not sure how punc tuating whatever it is would help the particular issue that i is facing if you know what I mean like
10. I bought this on here a few years back and I have never used it as much as I thought I would i just kind of never quite gelled with it if you know what I mean. Its well screwed together nice comfortable neck to play a little heavier than I would prefer but balances fairly well, my real problem I think is the sound it is very punchy (good thing) very powerful (i feel I am always trying to control it) but seems to lack a certain warmth don't get me wrong there's loads of bottom end available it's just slightly soul less to my ears, I'm hoping this makes some sort of sense to you all because I'm not sure it does to me. So I thought I would sell it looked at what was on the market with regard to price/quality comparison and stuck it up for sale in various places but no interest it would appear that despite the obvious quality Sandbergs have little resale value. And so the point of this post I'm wondering if its possible to lighten it a little and whats involved and is it something something I should ask a luthier to do and also if there is a pickup/ preamp change which could improve the overall tone and therefor make it a more attractive instrument for me to play. Any (polite) suggestions appreciated as despite playing bass for more years than i care to remember I have successfully managed to avoid learning anything usefull about bass guitars Cheers John
11.
but its just a bigness which enables to the sound to have a constant presence.
Is that like "heft" ? I'll get me coat
12. Thanks for the comments TRBboy it is a very nice instrument in all ways I just have a hankering for something a bit more old school jazz
13. could you tell me how much it weighs please
14. For sale my Sandberg Basic VM bought on here a few years back just been serviced including a fret polish by Rich from Tonefinder. Two band active eq with push/pull passive bypass very powerful and punchy sound very good condition. Hipshot D-tuner fitted by previous owner will include original tuner and original Sandberg gig bag. Would like to avoid posting, I'm up for a trade for a 4 stringer money either way. Think I may have over priced her looking at other Sandberg sales so price drop to £675
15.
weight please!
its out back with the sky hooks and rivet holes I'll get me coat
16. I really want to try these! What are they like at full treble? With chromes on my bitsa and noting that I only play finger style they give a nice full bottom end but not so much old school thump top end does not to my ears go very high but is strong enough to cut through 2 noisy guitars. I think if you want full on old school then these probably wont be your first choice but equally they are not overly modern sounding.
17. I used a Norstrand NP4 on a bitsa which was ok but for some sort of aggressive thing in the high mid to top range which I found myself trying to EQ out somewhat unsuccessfully. I let a local outfit by the name of Tonefinder have a listen to see what he thought and he suggested a change of cap value and the fitting of a treble bleed on the volume pot which I agreed to. The change it made was surprising to say the least definition improved no end the aggressive top thing gone more punch all in all major improvement. I guess what I am trying to say is you may not need new pups it might be that the change you want is in the cap, pots, pickup height/ action adjustments for less cost and of course undo able if you change your mind
18. how heavy is she and how would you describe the sound (yeah I know silly question)
19. definitely looking forward to hearing how these sound
20.
Quick question...who was the member who had the Alpha/A/Alpher bass? If you were standing at the back of the stage looking out towards the seating, he was at the 2.00 o'clock position. P
Stephen York had an Alpher 5 with him and very nice it is too
