1.
Beethoven's 5th took 4 years to get down...
It tells
2. I did have just one bass...but now I've got 2. There are definite reasons why I've got 2, I just can't remember them.
3. Is it still panto season???
4. The bass player I heard using an Ashdown Little Giant 1000w the other night certainly didn't sound wooly or muddy. My mate, who uses a little EB180, doesn't sound wooly either. He gets a very nice slap tone. Having heard other people use them, I certainly wouldn't be put off the brand.
5.
FWIW from the other end, as a guitar player, I have occasionally been stuck playing with bassists who want all the frequencies for themselves. Even my super tinny old Vox V-15 with a telecaster jammed on the bridge pickup needed to be cranked all the way up to "ear-bleeding death volume" to get round mr roundwound Ibanez Trace Elliot rig and his zingy massiveness. Some of you probably know who this guy is, he is also one of my oldest and dearest friends, and has a killer tone. But you will not get over his bass with EQ alone.
Has he got a blue/white 5 string Ibanez (a rather fetching paint job)? Does the gentleman in question sometimes don a rather fine goatee? Has he been known to play um...Maybe Naked...in the past?
6. I tried a couple of Ibanez SR's in a shop several months ago and, despite loving the SR I have, wasn't overly impressed with some of the QC on the ones I tried on that day. The set ups were both very iffy, my 300 was good out of the box. The routing for the control cavity cover was generous to say the least. The finish on the frets on one was awful. And there was a buzzing on one that when you plucked a string the buzz came from behind where you had fretted. (couldn't work out what that was). Generally the feel of both was was neither at all good. They're mass produced, it happens.
7. Unfortunately there are a plentiful supply of people in bands who don't have access to the combined knowledge on this site, so they merrily go on their way finding a sound they like in the comfort of their own home, mix it with the rest of the band...mush. Main problem I've encountered is when a guitarist has too much low in their sound. It tends to leave nowhere to go. In the two (failed ) projects I worked with last year, I had the same 'sound' in both and it worked. Didn't really touch the bass eq, my combo has a semi-parametric mid eq thingy and I ramped that up max at around 450hz and didn't touch the treble. I could be heard, but I didn't 'cut through' in the sense that it sat uncomfortably in the mix. Always seems that a lot of bands don't work on the overall eq mix, just volume.
8. Not the faintest idea as my playing sounds nothing like the music I listen to.
9. Drummer in the band I was in last year always had to have a few to 'settle his nerves'. Claimed he'd play better for it. He was wrong, he was sh*t sober and sh*t after a few.
10. No sound you say. Have you tried turning the volume up?
11. None. Gig last night, I made not one mistake, but then I wasn't playing.
12. Gear is nice. However, having watched a brilliant bass player last night it's only practice that'll get me where I want to go. The guy I saw last night has had the same bass for 15years and it's not his gear that is impressive. Anyway, I plug into my main amp and then my practice combo, I always sound the same, so gear is just that, gear.
13. Matt Brooks. He's in Willie and the Bandits and he's an absolutely incredible bass player, just stunning.
Korn.
Had one of their sausages once, awful!
15.
I can't say I've ever heard him before, but I have to ask.. Does he actually play his bass at gigs? It just seems like a prop at this one..
It'd be slightly off if he didn't, considering he's accused Tom Chapman who replaced him in New Order, of miming to tapes of his (Hook's) bass lines.
16. PRS for Music should take the stick for compiling such a ridiculous list and JLS should be ashamed to receive such an 'award'. Their fan base is quite young and it gives the impression a hard working band only do 34 shows then take the rest of the year off. The band I'm going to see tomorrow do between 240 and 260 gigs a year, from small pub venues to having just come back from supporting Deep Purple in large venues in Europe. In between they are writing and recording. That to me is hard work.
17.
You can smell me from there..? Better have a shower.
The current Mrs Discreet away again?
18.
Scuse me, while I butter this scone.
You've been scone a little while from this thread.
19.
Terrible!
Really? It could have been a Stepping Scone. It's all academic anyway as it's Scone Free now. EDIT: Disclaimer. I'm on powerful medication that can sometimes cloud my judgement. Bit like a Purple Haze decends.
20. Doesn't matter now what it is because it's probably scone along its way!!!
21.
Rich, EE were formed at the same time as Alt J but their releases pre-date Alt J by 4 years. They achieved notoriety before alt J, they were getting industry and broadcaster plaudits long before Alt J. They sound nothing like Alt J. What does 'trying too hard' sound like? And why is being fussy about the music one makes a negative thing?
Both formed in 2007. EE have been picking up plaudits and nominations for various awards over the past few years, but still not quite broken through etc etc. If I were an A&R bod at their record company I would have been looking at the success of Alt-J, seeing this as a prime time to really push EE and trying to tap into it. They may sound different, however, they're occupying a similar space musically and I'd definitely be trying to hook some of Alt-J's audience. They're both 'Indie Pop/Rock' bands. For my taste, fussy, because each element seems to be trying to battle for attention and distracting from the whole, i.e the song itself. And yes all music is contrived. As soon as you have an idea and start to develop it it becomes contrived. However, I agree with discreet, this feels like they have purposely gone out of their way to create something 'credible'. I don't hate their material, it just doesn't do anything for me either. I'm off to sharpen my knives and clean my shotgun whilst listening to some experimental jazz
22.
Exactly and that is what it is about. Maybe they need to use a word other than Masterclass as that implies a- they are a master and b- it is a class. It is more of a general talk from a bassist in my experience.
More "An Audience With Peter Hook". They could video it and show for anyone who couldn't attend on a BBC4 at about 1am in the morning
23. Never heard of them before. If it's true, as the OP has said, that there are ads for them all over the internet then it would seem to me that their record company are pushing them hard on the tails of the succes Alt-J have enjoyed recently. "If you liked these guys then try these for size!!!" EE don't do an awful lot for me. It's like they're trying to hard, a bit fussy.
24. He's probably going to show people how to screw up your back by playing the bass around your ankles.
25.
Before someone forgets to mention it: different series can have different necks, so more or less chunky P necks exist and more or less slim J necks. People will certainly chime in with hard facts and better knowledge, but at least this has now been mentioned. best, bert
Exactly. There's quite a few different nut sizes in the various Precision ranges. Then of course the profile (back to front) of the neck can be different. The Rockbass Corvette I had had a 38mm nut, so Jazz width, but was as chunky as. I hated it. The P bass I have has a 43.1mm nut but due to the profile I find much easier to play. As Conan said, you can't prejudge a neck by what it says the dimensions are. Pick it up and play it.
