If the threads are a different size, no amount of filing will help, the only option is to get a correct size thread cut using the appropriate tap.
Was literally the tiniest amount that it needed reducing by, was almost there but just not quite enough if that makes sense, filed it down on the basis that if I go to far I can always epoxy the jack to the plate, worked out though with filing so is all good, managed to bore the whole out as well so that the socket fits in the body. Pics to follow in a while.
2. Hope you get it sorted, it's not nice when things don't go right. Don't be put off of Markbass amps themselves though, I had one for a while and was a great sounding amp and very very reliable.
Take a visit to your nearest jobbing engineer and they will be able to run a tap through the mounting plate to match the thread on the jack socket, or if you know the size of the thread on the jack socket, you could buy a cheap tap & die set and do it yourself. You could also try opening out the hole in the jack plate, but looking at the shape of it it might be difficult to fasten down the nut on the jack socket. Have you considered a jack socket like this?
Considered maybe trying to file it back slightly inside but worried about ruining the threads as I want to screw the jack in rather than use the nut at the end, nut on the end would drive my ocd crazy lol

Bit of an update, all sanded down and EMG's installed and new jack socket plate arrived, I've decided to go for the aftermarket telecaster style plate rather than the original long and skinny jack, means me drilling out a bigger hole and recess which is fine, one thing I'd not considered though is that the threads for the jack are a tiny bit too big for the threads on the jack socket, not by much but enough to not let it go in, anyone got any ideas? 5.
Me, I've only had a MAG 410, and agree with the notion that at least that one is not woolly. That said, I did experience it as being slightly indifferent/lazy, which could well be the gate to woolliness. Reports on how the ABM differs from the MAG are wildly varying, so I think you should hear an ABM for yourself so you're not guided in the wrong direction.
Sounds like good advice thanks, I've had one of the ashdown mini stacks before and was impressed with the tone especially being so cheap my only issue was that I gave up on it after heads dying in a fairly short space of time but cabs were fine
6. I still very much like the design, being bog standard isn't a bad thing depending on what the standard 4x10'cabs sound like lol
7. Just wondering if anyone as ever tried these or better still own one/some, I really like the look of them but was curious to what the sound was like and reliability as I've had bad experiences with ashdown heads before. Any help would be great.
What is the plan for body and neck finishing and getting the rest of the black off the neck? EMG PJ's - on my shopping list too so I'm watching this thread to see how it all comes together. Cheers, Rich
Not sure where to start lol, the rest of the paint is coming off of the neck, it's a nice three piece maple underneath, it's going to be a Lord of the Rings influenced bass so body is going to be sanded for now but the plan eventually is to paint it an off white and stick a Middle Earth map on the front, burn it and distress it a bit and lacquer over it. Fingerboard is coming off and being replaced with a wenge one and planning on doing the one ring inscription (never done this before so will be a bit of a challenge lol. Bridge is being replaced with a mono rail system I think and a few other bits here and there. Fair bit to do lol.

Ready for sanding, and gutted the electronics ready for the EMG pickups that I got from Kim on here, will be the first time it's had 2 pickups in years

Meet Despair

Hi All, first time I've posted in build diary so fingers crossed, so here's a bit of background. This is Despair, she was my first ever bass a Ibanez SR800 I believe from the nineties. Originally finish was in Gloss Black however I let my younger brother borrow my bass bag to put his BC RIch Warlock guitar in and unknown to me at the time it's pointy edges put a nice whole in the bottom of my bass bag, this led to my bass being unprotected and a nice big chunk of the black paint being ripped off of the body. This led to in my youth stripping the paint off, staining it blue and burning the body with a blow torch, I also stripped half of the paint off of the neck but the Ibanez paint is nasty stuff and took an age so gave up half way. Sooo on to the present she's the only bass I have left currently as I've sold all of my other gear and thought rather than buying something new for now it's time to spend some money on the bass I've owned for an age and has always served me well even though it's been pretty neglected. So here's some pics as she currently stands.
11.
Probably worth leaving the neck for another few days to see what happens to it - it might still have a little way to go.
Yeah to be fair I've not long ago had an heat gun on it to remove the paint off of the neck, not my preferred method but the only way of removing the really really thick Ibanez paint
12. I reckon I'm going to have to re shim for now, I did a quick one but wasn't great so will make a better one for now and see about straightening the neck at a later date, thanks for all the help chaps.
13. That's an amazing idea, why didn't I think of that. Erm I covered my entire bass body in bubble wrap for a while if that counts lol
14. Ah makes sense in that case, don't ask me why but I thought tightening it made it bow forward, at least I know noe, truss rod is currently completely slackened off with just enough to tension it and keep it rattling but still buzzing :-( it'll do for now I plane on replacing the fretboard in future so will check how the straight the neck is then etc
15. Yeah it's been buzzing for a while but finally getting round to setting it up now I've got some new strings and pickups, the saddles are already higher than I'd, I always thought tensioning the trus rod bowed the neck forward rather than pulled it backwards.
16. Hi All, thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas on here before I drive myself crazy. I'm re setting up my trusty old Ibanez and getting fret buzz on the top of the neck (up to about the 5th fret) I've got a nice big gap at the bridge end of the fretboard, the thing that's confusing me is turning the trus rod clockwise to tension it seems to make it worse rather than better however if I bend the neck forwards by holding it and pulling it seems to improve things, very confused. Have I over looked something somewhere?

Brought some EMG pickups from Kim, fantastic communication, tracking number provided day after payment and arrived quicker than some stuff from the UK, genuinely nice guy and a pleasure to deal with
18. Not something I need myself, but I have got a set of these on an old Ibanez and they're brilliant, hardly ever go out of tune infact were far better than the schaller's I had on another bass, I have a cover missing too lol. Have a bump on me
19. Hi All, this is a bit of an odd one but here goes, I'm rebuilding my old bass and considering gold hardware and optima gold strings would very much suit my OCD. However I purchased a set a while ago for my Warwick (now sold) and to be honest they completely killed the sound I very much lost most of the top end. I did to be honest by a thicker gauge than I usually go for though they are for a different bass, so just thought I'd ask has anybody else had experiences with them and how did you find them? Just curious to if it was my choice in gauge or that the strings just arn't that great. Peoples opinions would be really appreciated as I love the look of them but don't want to waste money on another set as they ain't cheap. Thanks, Al
20. Hi, out of curiosity is that international shipping e.g. to the UK? and would customs cost need to be paid? just thought I'd check while I have a think
21.
The Jap SR800 has Ibanez AFR pickups. The SR1000 has EMGs labelled IBZ USA C2 (pre 90 was Ibanez). The EMG pickups are pretty good, so may be worth looking at popping EMGs in your SR800.
Thanks for the advice yeah she's pretty old, sounds like a good plan, was looking for active anyway and had EMG's in my 6 string ESP before I sold it and was very impressed. I don't mind modifying the pickup cavities and had considered some soap bars of some sort.
22. I wish, nah they come with Ibanez soundgear pickups, already ripped the jazz out as the output was than uneven between strings it was unusable

24. Ok, not sure where to start, after suffering from lack of funds I'm back to my original and first bass that I purchased and learned to play on, my trusty old Ibanez SR800, I've had her around 15 years and is looking a bit worse for wear, started off gloss black but long story short after my brother borrowed my bass bag and put an hole in it the paint work got ruined, I ended up stripping part of the neck and and refinishing in a blue stain and burned stripes into it. However now I'm wanting to do something different and bring her back to life, already have in mind what I want to do but the pickups have always sucked (no offence to people who like them) anyway quick question, anyone able to recommend a decent P and J configuration setup, would be more interested in people with an Ibanez SR that's done so but any input would be good. It's Ash body and maple neck. Considering a set or Barts if I can get a set cheap enough used but want to hear some opinions...and now I'm just waffling s I'll shut up
25. Thought I'd give it a bit of a bump
