  1. I'll start with the disclaimer that this is just my own opinion here, but: I have just 'obtained' Westfield P-Bass copy. I've set it up, re-wired it, have a GFS pickup on order and replaced the bridge. All of the upgrades cost a total of £50 inclusive of delivery. These basses are £110 new. So, the bass is made from cheese, possibly MDF or similar. But it sounds fantastic! It's got all the clarity, weight and guts of 'the real thing' and I've been able to directly compare between this and a USA P-Bass. Stays in tune, nothing falls off (but if it did, it'd be a cheap fix). So really, assuming you are someone who likes to tinker and customise a bit, how could it ever be justifed to go and spend £1k+ on summat 'posh', when you could pick up a couple of these and not worry in the slightest about the odd knock here and there? Right, off you go Internet, argue! Cheers, James
  2. So what do we actually MAKE over here, and where do those profits go once your cash is in the till of the retailer? Take Ashdown as an example, yes they are a British company, but aren't MAGs made in China? Therefore does buying a MAG over something from a company like Behringer really do much good for 'keeping it British'? Cheers, James

    Boxing day gigs?

Personally-speaking, I'd never do another boxing day gig, they can be a total wasteland... I'd say something like Boxing day would equate to time and a half, so for you £300 max? I think you're right on the NYE gig being double time, but at £400 you are still VERY cheap to some (distintinctly average) bands I know. We charge more than that, but that's only really to cover the massive costs of babysitters being on double time too! Cheers, James
  4. There are a few things emerging here: 1). Not every amp Ashdown or ANY company makes, breaks. And, conversely not every amp they make stays working forever. 2). It's fairly obvious when people are just 'haters' and don't or can't back up tales of woe with their own experiences 3). Amps have an EQ on them, it's probably wise to use it if you don't like the flat tone. 4). ANY amp is only as good as the cab it is being run through. My Kustom practise amp sounds extraordinary through my Eden, but chuck an Ampeg through the 8" speaker on my Kustom and the only thing you'll get is smoke. Good cabs are crucial - just as much so as any amp that drives them. 5). People like arguing on the Internet. Cheers, James
  5. I'm no Ashdown hater, although my experience with three of their products has been negative. However, the shop near me claim and I am only passing on what they say that they terminated their Ashdown dealership due to unusually high returns. This may be rubbish, they may be bitter and I could very well be unlucky, but it supports my experience that their heads are not reliable. That said, our previous bassplayer abused a MAG 300 1x15 and it never gave up on him. Another chap I know had his repaired three times in three years. Cheers, James
  6. I had one, it blew up. They can't be all bad though, but mine blew up. Your call of course, but mine blew up. Cheers, James
  7. Can you measure the spacing between the string slot on the E and the G please? Am interested, but want to make sure this won't make my spacing all weird...
  8. Hmmm, I think if I were you, i'd consider something like one of the Peavey Firebass or similar - dirt cheap but bags o' power and happy down to 2 ohms if you did replace the 15 in the Mag for a 4 ohm unit. Usually got for less than £200 - you could probably shift the Little Giant for a shade less than that? EDIT: Typos galore.
  9. Nope, overall great condition bar the missing screws - Oh and I took the handle off too, but that could be replaced - it did the typical behringer snap-in-the-middle problem. No knobs missing, all buttons and jacks work and no 'damage' to the carcass to speak of! Cheers, James
  10. Hi Michael, The noise is the sort of thing you'd notice at home practising in your bedroom, but not in a live environment, that's for sure. It doesn't really get that much louder with volume and I've gigged it before and never had anyone mention it, even between songs. I can package up no probs If you're able to let me know today then I can probably get it ready for collection tomorrow! Cheers, James
  11. I'm no expert, but I've noticed that amplifiers with class D power amps, they often seem much quieter than more 'conventional' amps. Deffo check out another head before doing any more speaker work...although the Superfly let me down in a big way anyway, I was never happy with the output I got from it, and think the Little Giant is of a similar nature! As I say, even my Behringer who supposedly inflate their output figures totally trounced it for output. Cheers, James
  12. I MAY be putting the cat amoungst the pigeons here, but if it's out and out volume you are looking for (and I know the Mag cab can handle plenty of output as it had walls rattling when I had it!) you may want to point the finger of suspicion at your head. I had a Superfly 1000, which I believe uses the same power amp as the Little Giant and it was a VERY quiet 2x500w (and yes, I was running it at 4 ohms before anyone chirps in), my backup Behringer BX3000 always felt MUCH louder. Before you rush into replacing the speaker (as that RCL in the MAG is a corker!), see if you can borrow a head from someone who is local to you and try it with your cabs, I'm not a betting man but I would expect you to be surprised! Cheers, James
  13. I'd look at your buy it now price matey if you want a quick sale, DV have them for £285.25
  14. I have to say that it doesn't matter who makes an instrument in my opinion, an ass-ugly bass is an ass-ugly bass, and THAT is an ass-ugly bass! Cheers, James

  16. Cheers guys, sure it'll give someone years of good service but TWO backups is probably excessive! Thanks, James
  17. Hi John, Sorry - you just missed out on this, sold yesterday evening whilst I was away from my mails and is now fully paid. Thanks anyway! james

    OLP MM3

I think it's largely par for the course, unless you're detuning and using overhead power cables for strings, they do exhibit quite a middy sound - however, that's what cuts through! I was staggered last night at the tone from my P-Bass, it was earth-moving yet I could hear it, moved over to my Jazz (with GFS pickups) and suddenly I could hear myself, but wasn't any louder, per se. Cheers, James
  19. Hi all, I have here a Behringer BX3000 300w head that has been my faithful backup for a while now, however since I have upgraded my main head this is now backup number 2 and realistically-speaking I can't see me using it. First off, it works - however: 1). It's a bit noisy - It's been like it since I've had it and is only noticeable in quiet situations when NOT playing, otherwise you'd never ever know. Never got any worse and nothing else weird has ever happened, I'd put it down to being one of those things and never worried about it. 2). It's got some screws missing - this is down to me as I stupidly though I'd try to rackmount it, got it out, realised it wasn't a good idea and then lost a couple of the screws that secure the guts to the wooden sleeve. There's still plenty there though, it's not going anywhere.... So, £50 - that's a bargain for a solid 'does what it says on the tin' amp head - I even have the footswitch for it which I've never used! Also comes with a speakon->speakon speaker cable. If you want it posted, it'll cost yer, otherwise collection or meetup half way in St Albans / Stevenage area of herts. Cheers, James
  20. Thanks Lemmy - that completes the history! A bargain for someone, that's for sure....
  21. Are you quoting anything in it? If so, delete all the quotes and have another go... OR you may be using Safari - I sometimes get some bizarre error messages and am forced to go back to Firefox. Cheers, James
  22. Thanks Dave! It's so nice on occasions like this where the history of a bass can be unearthed from its previous owners! Cheers, James
  23. Best - Soundslive.co.uk Still to be rated - Bass Merchant, great comms so far but the cab I ordered is still floating about in customs - not Darren's fault! Worst - Bass Cellar. I've often been in there with cash (or credit card) in pocket and their attitude sent me running for the hills. Cheers, James
  24. Hi all, Bought this off this very forum from the fine Dr.Dave of this parish, however I need a few spare quid after the rather rash purchase of another fretted and I simply can't play well enough to warrant keeping it! The details: Jaco 'Tribute' bass of unknown vintage, but with a very nice sunburst and super-comfy lined fretless neck. 'Fender' logo fitted and lacquered over Second string tree added USA Fender P'ups and electronics added Badass Bridge added Scratchplate added Condition: I've tried to take photos showing the 'relicd' nature of the bass - I'm not sure how much came from gigging etc and how much is inflicted but it really looks the part and is NOT over-done (in my opinion). The bass was recently taken to a pro as the truss rod had seized, he has managed to free it so all is now well on that front. A new set of Elites have been fitted too (roundwound). There are some marks from strings on the fretboard as is common. So, pics: Shipping: I'd rather ship this neck-off, but it you wanted it posted as is, I'd recommend we try to find you (me) a hardcase to ship it in, contact me for details on that score. Actual postage cost will be in the region of £12-15 via UPS. So, how much then? **** SOLD ***** I'm asking for £150 + postage which is really what the bass owes me, and at that price it's a bargain and could easily be parted-out for that much and you'd turn a profit. It's a shame to do that though as it's a gorgeous looking thing with many gigs left in it! Paypal welcome, but you pays the fees! Collection especially welcome and i'll pop the kettle on (Stevenage or St Albans). Cheers, James
