  1. Always try and play with musicians that are more accomplished than you. The Beatles would not have been the band they were, without two great songwriters trying to out-do each other. There is a thing called healthy competition, a driver.
  2. Don't use more fretting pressure than you need to fret cleanly, it never helps:
  3. Interval recognition through familiarity... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interval_recognition
  4. Those that can, do. Those that can't, just slag off those that can. Welcome to Britain.
  5. Jamerson/Parker/Coltrane et al, all played in a non-repetitive style. One of the things with your average overplayer, is that they end up repeating themselves very quickly. The same licks, in different songs.
  6. Who appointed Fodera as King of the bass world anyway... There are lots of top level names who don't play them.
  7. Which one would you choose to be stranded on a desert island with? A Jazz bass would do for me.
  8. Fretless has a habit of concentrating the mind.
  9. Expensive doesn't always mean good. I've learned that one by experience.
  10. Everything in its right place. There's nothing to prove.
  11. I blame Futurism for the whole crock of new products and the fascination with Musk.
  12. You pays your money and you takes your chances if you're buying off Dodgy Jack.
  13. Sounds a bit tappity to me, like it could do with an oil change.
  14. The sound of the prawn cocktail starter was louder than the band.
  15. Eat more spinach. Keep your thumb around or below the centre line at the back of the neck and keep your fingers arched, avoid the grip.
  16. I bought Mother's Milk when it came out, and Fishbone's - Truth and Soul came out around the same time. By comparison, the Chilli Peppers just sounded like a pale imitation, with shouty tuneless vocals over slap lines with nothing of interest to say. Hearing Anthony Kiedis trying to sing after all these years is quite painful.
