1.
FuNkShUi Trust me i'm keeping it simple it's the only way i've any hope of learning it! I'm seriously thinking of sticking a cheat sheet with the chords on it to the side of the amp just incase i totally forget any of the songs!
Do it. Whos gonna complain about you having a sheet with the chords on? ? Would have to be a sad person who feels it spoils the night if any of the musicians are "cheating" IMO anyway! Youll be surprised how quickly youll stop needing them. Have faith
  2.
What are your prices Jon?
Jon doesnt often go online mate. ill PM you his details now
  3. If anyone is in two minds whether or not to have lessons in general, id say go for it. I have lessons from Jon. Improved my playing no end, and bucked up my motivation levels. All round tidy guy too. Oh, and he can play a bit aswell!!!!
  4. A few easy songs my covers band play are : * Stereophonics - Local boy..... * Temper track - sweet disposition * White stripes - seven nation army (this is really easy and really recognisable so will stand a good chance to get yourself a cheer ) Like the gents before me have said, just stick to the chords at first, and these songs are pretty simple. Not a lot of parts to learn in any of them. When you get better you can start adding your own litte touches of genius

    Chorus Pedal

Ive got the Boss Ce-2b. Its ok. When i got it i didnt really know what to expect, but i was underwhelmed to be honest. There just didnt seem to be a massive difference when the pedal was on, to when it was off IMO. I still use it, but i would like to have something a little more noticeable, so may be loking to change it soon.
  6.
Yeah I really like the song, listened to it several times... I'll check out the others this eve! ped
thats cool. When you get a chance to have a listen and let me know what you think. Any advice/help is always much appreciated as we are about to record again soon
  7.
Groovy tune!
cheers ped! its our drummers moment of glory cos he gets to do lead vocals on that track
  8.
There seems to be 2 schools of thought here, one for low action and one for setting it higher. Is it dependant on the bass/string set up? or is this a generic stance?
The first question i asked when i started going to lessons was "how should i set up my bass for slap". My tutors reply was "how do you want to set up your bass" i think what he was trying to get at is you set it up how it feels comfortable for you. There is no right or wrong way. Have a play about, try different things. Personally i dont like roundwounds for slap. Takes away some of the "zing" IMO. I have a relatively low action and use D'addario. 45-105 gauge i think. Thats what i had for the EP i recorded (website below) and it works for me. The song called Funk Shui has a slap line
  9.
More guts mate, try an eq and crank the bass. You're defo onto a winner there but it just needs that little extra rumble.
+1
  10. sorry for late reply, been away all weekend. Ill have a check at what you mentioned when i get in tonight and il re-post tomorrow. Cheers for the suggestion!
  11. I had the Boss loop pedal bought for me off flea bay. My partner didnt realise it said on the advertisement that the pedal isnt working! I contacted the seller just to ask if he knew what the problem was. He said it was working, and he put it in a drawer and forgot about it for 3 years. Got it out, and then it wasnt working. *MAGIC* Was just wondering if there any common faults i could possibly look for myself? Its the Japanese version of the pedal. I dont know if that makes a difference
  12. cheers again for all the advice, and thanks! i spoke to the warehouse they are being distributed to, and ive been told Lakland have sent a couple over. So when they come in ill get a phone call, and ill be able to go up and try whatever is there. There'll definitly be a DD, but the rest is just chance. Im hopin they put a few US series in the shipment by mistake
  13.
I would definitely try a USA JO5 and a 55-94 or, if you don't want a 5 string, a USA JO4 and a 4-94.
i havent got on with 5ers in the past, but i suppose it wont do any harm trying!!
  14. Yeh im going to get the Skyline model, just because i didnt think i could justify spending that much extra when the advantages arent that obvious i guess. I know some people will say its worth it, but IMO, i didnt think i could justify it. I have got the option of trying a few out. The UK distributor for Lakland is Headline Music store, so i can travel up there to have a go of a few of them. I liked the DD when i played it, but i like what ive heard of the JO too. So yeh, definitly worth a try i reckon!
  15. Yeh thanks again Rob, some cracking tunes there!
  16. Ive been very lucky to pick up an endorsement deal with Lakland and was looking for advice/opinions on the different availible models. I have played the Duck Dunn, and loved it. So for this reason, this is the model im leaning towards getting. Unless someone on here can persuade me otherwise. Basically i havent played any other Lakland, so was looking for advice and recommendations off people who have. I play in a couple of bands. One does covers, and one does originals. So it needs does need to be quite versatile. Ta very much
  17. to everyone, thanks again for all advice given. Ive started practisin a few of the suggestions by Rob, but with varied levels of success!! whilst wishing the hours away in work this week, ive decided to take the "basslines" book i have into work, and im going to try and go through the whole book, just writing out what each and every note is. Hopefully this will make me more familiar with each of them, and will mean when im playing i wont have to think about what each of them are when reading. Will just seem like reading (thats the hope) Ill let you know how it goes. i have started writing the notes out, and stumbled upon an arrangement by Jaco. "chromatic fantasy". I hadnt heard it before. Quite tricky to say the least!
  18.
I've said it before on this forum (and I'll keep saying it) - GET A TEACHER if you want to be a good sight-reader. You may think you are playing it correctly, but if you haven't yet developed good reading skills, how can you be sure ? I've had new pupils come to me saying "Oh yes I can read music". Then you put something easy in front of them and straight away they show just how poor their understanding of the written note is. You will end up with all sorts of bad habits/ misunderstandings that may take years to put right. If you do sight reading regularly with your teacher listening and correcting your mistakes, you will make quick progress. The Major
I have got a teacher, and we plan to do reading practise one session a month. I just thought id get some info on books i could be working on between those sessions. But thank you, i know your right, because without a teacher, any bad habits i could develop would go unoticed, and would be a lot harder to lose!
  19.
I'm feeling really angry, frustrated and disappointed with myself. I can't see any progress happening lately, whereas before this it was happening in leaps and bounds. Even though I usually do make time for structured practice, lately I just keep picking up the bass and jamming. It's like I can't help myself. I have wasted hours and hours of time recently just creating riffs and grooves to backing drum tracks and basically p*ssing about. It's not constructive other than how totally therapeutic it is after a sh*t day. I seem to be playing bass a lot as a sanctuary but not actually doing anything to progress my playing. I have thought through this carefully as it is not like me to be so undisciplined and I think the main reason I am constantly noodling is because I can't quite figure out what to do next in terms of learning. I have already tried loads of genres, techniques and music rudiments and they are things to keep working at but what else can I do to expand my bass horizons? I dismissed it as just a phase but it's happening too often now. I need something to get me back on track and trucking forward again. Any hints or tips gratefully received as this is really making me feel totally disappointed with myself.
Im unsure of the level your at (whether your pro), but sometimes a lesson off a tutor can give you new ideas to work with/ new things to try. Certainly opened my eyes and gave me a lot of motivation again!! I was in your position not so long ago, and after a bit bit of persuading, i booked a lesson....best decision i could of made!! im enjoying again, and fully motivated!
  20. Recording at the studio run by the son of Phil Campbell from Motorhead. Its built as a part of his house, and the bathroom is indoors. Inside the bathroom the walls are filled, and i mean completely covered with photos of Phil and Lemmie meeting all sorts of famous celebs from around the world. This was quite a surreal site to be surrounded by whilst. . . doing your business!! Never thought id have the queen watching me on the toilet
  21.
I think 4ft Fingers worked in Pizza Hut while they weren't touring, but yeah, part time jobs I'm afraid!
They played a gig in my town a few years ago supporting douglas and the ataris. quality band, and a quality gig!! Actually it was when their bassist had just left, and a new dep had stepped in. What a player he was!!
  22. to everyone, thanks for all the advice. got enough here to keep me going for a fair while i think!! and like most have mentioned, i think it is concentration im struggling with most. but as already mentioned, practise should do it! thanks again gents
  23.
Sounds like you've been given "Basslines" by Joe Hubbard?
thats the one!
  24.
F. Simandl, beginner trombone books, try my transcriptions of Milt Hinton and Ron Carter (under Theory and Technique), other transcriptions I have done here have been pretty easy reads (some less so). Most of all; be patient and be kind (to yourself).
Cheers Rob, ill have a look at them over the weekend and let you know how i get on. I know what your on about being patient!! Been going wrong on bits i know i can play, but finding it hard to see whats coming (notes-wise) and play at the same time. Kind of like the "bottleneck" effect when your learning to drive a car im guessin!! ill persevere
