OK, it's sadly time to sell this guitar, as I've got things I need to buy. After my little lad knocked over and then fell on my (really nice) Arbiter Les Paul early last year, cracking the neck joint, I decided to buy myself the guitar I'd been gassing for forever - a Gordon Smith Explorer. Turns out these things are made to order, and by the time it arrived (it took 7 months to turn up) I'd begun gigging again with the bass, and it's sat in its gigbag ever since. Consequently, it's only been played in the house, and even then only a few times, and still has the protective plastic covers on the scratchplate and the back plates. It's in unmarked As New condition. The body is Brazilian Cedar, the neck is Brazilian Mahogany, the board is Rosewood, and it's a lovely example of handbuilt luthier work. It's got the optional tuneomatic bridge, and both GS humbuckers are coil tapped. Sold a jetglo 1980 4001 for practically buttons (£250) to fund then-irresistible Pointy Bass GAS (well, it WAS the 80s) and bought an Aria ZZB Deluxe. Within a few months I'd compounded the error by selling my 75 Precision for a similar amount for a Washburn B20-8. Was there no end to my foolishness? Mind you, although both pointy things are long gone, I'd have the Washburn back again just for the novelty. Can't remember what I got for my SVT and 8x10, but it was comparitively beggar all, too... The only thing I have left from those days is my owned-from-new BB3000A, which I'm now considering selling. I may come to regret that in the future, too - it's so hard to tell without hindsight...

Plus if anybody successfully modded an SX P-bass what were the results like?[/quote] I've got an SX P-bass, which I've modded with a Schaller 3D bridge and a Mighty Mite neck and it's one of the best P-basses I've ever played, period - and I'm a big P-bass fan, so I've owned/tried a lot of them. I sold my 08 US P-Bass and kept this one - it's the one in my sig - and it's my go-to bass these days. I bought it secondhand, though, and I've no idea where to buy SX gear new, or I'd be buying more of their stuff.

I shifted mine a while ago (before the New Age Of Austerity kicked in) for £250, which I thought was OK (and was what I'd paid for it).

With apologies to Crocodile Dundee, [i]that's[/i] not a lightweight 2x15...[i]the Schroeder 1515L[/i] is a lightweight 2x15... I like mine very much, and at about 40lbs, it does stairs, too... although if you're after the look of a trouser-enhancing 6ft bass stack behind you onstage, it might not be what you're after.

Well, as an ex-Ampeg owner, my Markbass and Sansamp do the job. All the tone, a fraction of the weight. I'd say IMHO, but that doesn't seem to be where this thread's at...so that's a definite. Anyone who disagrees is clearly kidding themselves...

Will boutique basses be good long-term investments?

The market dictates these things, and the market for Fenders is very much bigger than the market for any boutique brand. Fender is an iconic brand, and it's a sad fact that a significant proportion of the people who spend a lot of money on iconic instruments have their actual playability and quality fairly low on their priority list. -

Yep, I have an acoustic foam pad I use all the time with my 1515L, and this kills the boom and tightens up the bottom end a treat. Oooer missus. It cost relatively beggar all, and makes a massive amount of difference. I used it with my MB 410 too, and it was great with that.

Hi Mate, If by your local shop you mean PMT, bear in mind they've got a 4003 in there for an eye-watering £1999, so they're not exactly cheap. It does look very nice, though, and, like folk round here who know more than me, I've never heard of or seen a Tribute 1500. It's certainly worth a look, anyway. Muzz
