Help on dating a vintage Fender Tweed Case needed
Sibob replied to 73Jazz's topic in Accessories and Misc
I was under the impression that '63 cases tended to be the white tolex....specific to that year!? Si -
Found this buried on my hard drive and thought it'd be cool to share. I know it's not a slappy tappy affair, but I always loved the general sound and vibe of it. It's an ME-50b into an Akai Headrush E2, so all live/looped.....mistakes and all lol Enjoy: http://soundcloud.com/simonpoulton/cry-well-catch-the-tears Si

I certainly get what you're asking. I would say the '83 has a lot more in common with my '73 tone wise, than my '03. I know for sure that my '03 has 60's spacing, and tends to sound a bit more rounded, whereas the '83 seems to share that 70's-esque nasal quality on the bridge pickup. Having said that I haven't noticed the pickup spacing, so will take a look tonight Si
Sorry you couldn't get on with it mate, it seemed a nice bass
Oh it's a great bass, stunning to look at, really fast neck, genuine Jazz tones.....I just haven't bonded with it enough to not sell it in favor of a 70's Precision lol. Plus as I said, my '73 Jazz is just the go-to bass
I will get a YOB Jazz one day but this one will have to pass me by
Do it, it's definitly cooler than a Jaguar Cheers all Si

For sale is my 1983 Fender Jazz that I bought from Tom1946 in December. The only reason for sale is that I have my eye on an old Precision, and I haven't fallen in love with this enough (even though it's a 'birth year' bass) to keep it.....I just keep reaching for my '73 J. Sienna Burst, slim maple neck, rare (for the era) two piece scratchplate/control plate. An example of this can be seen in the 'The Fender Bass: An Illustrated History' book, page 79. Obviously the funny shadow here is my reflection, not the finish The case has some bumps and scrapes etc, but perfectly useable....actually it's quite nice to have a hardcase that doesn't resemble a rifle case lol. This pic is from Tom and edited by another BC member, I can't remember who lol, but hope its ok to use When I took the pickups out for the bridge to be rewound, thought it looked cool lol, although the iPhone makes the burst look a bit rubbish. It's genuinely a stunning finish. I paid a tiny tiny bit under 1k for this, it's in very very good condition for a 27 year old bass. I had the bridge pickup rewound by Wizard pickups as it was seemingly an open circuit when I received it, plus 1 new pot which replaced a dodgy replacement lol. Also comes with a small, non-original hardcase. And so price is [s]£1000[/s] £950 + p&p, but collection/meet up very much preferred Cheers Si P.s. Had the neck off and this is October '83

I just bought some KNK KNS8400 headphones, well worth a look at around £139 I think. Si
-
Sorry bud, I'm gigging Have a good one, we'll do dim sum again soon Si
-
Yup, will always play for free depending on the gig, don't be expecting me to spend 6hours setting up, waiting, playing your wedding, then driving 2 hours home though ....I'll be on tour with my buddies lol Actually, saying this.....I've decided.....getting paid isn't for the playing for me....getting paid is for the rest of the rubbish I have to put up with lol Si

Fender 2009 US Std Jazz in 3csb, R'wood and T'shell

Yeah I went from about 9 basses at one point (mostly random bits and pieces), down to the 4 Jazzes I have now. They all get used a lot, and they're not a distraction from each other because they're basically the same bass.....just with little intricacies . Si
-
Just to be a complete pedant, an Allparts neck isn't a Fender neck......Fender have simply said they're allowed to use the headstock shape.....it's an Allparts neck. To be fair they make great necks, had a Jazz one on a Precision bass and it certainly held it's own. Good luck with the sale, looks like a nice little bitsa! Si

I think essentially its what WoT said, each gig on its merits. If NO musician ever got paid, there would be 99% less covers bands, other than jam nights, and a lot more original music doing the rounds. Yes I'd still play for free, but I'd be making a point to do original/my own stuff over covers stuff. I play in my covers band because I enjoy the musicians, but I wouldn't be playing for someone else with them. Si
