I think I'm edging towards giving the Kickass a try, it seems nice and smooth (no spikey bits for palm muting), and very adjustable, moreso than the otherwise very well thought of Badass. Also not weird seeing them on a Fender. Seems like a no brainer?! Si

I'm looking to replace the bridge on my JV Jazz, has anyone had experience of all three of the above? Thoughts when comparing them all? Pros/cons etc? I'm primarily a fingerstyle player who often plays Palm-muted. I have a B-style on my Xotic and its fine, should I go for that, or is something like the Kickass a genuine step up? Cheers Si

Sold Shemeck my Maruszczyk Jake. Very pleasant and helpful when organising the meetup, Recommended Cheers and enjoy the bass Si

Line6 are not known for their footswitches. I believe the M series is the same as the DL-4 in that the 'switch' is just a plunger into a small tactile switch on the PCB, utter crap. These can be desoldered and then replaced with a mechanical momentary DPDT momentary switch. But that mod is not for the feint hearted. I did 2 on my DL-4 and never again, had Martin at Owens Electronics mod the other two. So much more reliable now though. Si
Here's my 3p worth (see what I did there?): Left - 1973 in Natural Ash, all original except the brass control knobs Centre - CIJ '57 RI in Candy Apple Red with CS '62 pickup (KiOgon loom incoming) Right - AVRI '63 RI in Faded Sonic Blue with Hipshot Xtender It's fair to say I'm fond of Precisions...
Yup, lovely collection, but all about that Sonic Blue AVRI Si
Haha, the Lakin headstock is not great, but better than AC, Lull or Nordstrand ones. IMO. I also have a slight beef with the Lakland oval bridge, but could let it slide if I had a US Decade - lovely basses!
Absolutely don't agree with this, the Lakin is the worst of the bunch for me! Eugh Si
Well, got quite a long way through discussions - I think he might have got fed up with me asking now :/ Trouble is everything you say the price goes up and the more you realise you want. But if I am going to spend that much on a bass it has to be perfect. Thats my only real concern, without trying one, if its not perfect, that is a large amount of money down the tubes. I mean I am sure it will be technically perfect, but if it has some clunky neck I can't get on with, then you do lose a lot. Still, damn gorgeous looking things, and if he gets back to me I think I am going to end up with something quite soon!
So specify the neck dimensions, they can work to exact measurements! Si

For me, if you're just looking for suggestions on basses that look and sound like jazz basses, I would be looking at Xotic, Lull, Sadowsky, Lakland.....in that order of (my) preference. I'm having a particularly fun time with my Xotic XJ-1T 'Lightweight' 5er. If you want something that sounds like a jazz, but doesn't necessarily LOOK like a jazz, well then your options grow exponentially! Si
Sorry to be that guy, but I was seriously confused what you were doing in your job that meant you had to explain a difference of 0.3 meters per second, and had to read it several times until I realised you didn't mean m/s and actually meant ms (as in millisecond) I know it should have been obvious in context what you meant but in my job I deal with both times and distances every hour of the day, so couldn't get my head round it!
No you're completely right, it's a really bad habit that I'm in, which is off as it actually takes more effort lol Si
-
It's commonly thought that most of us can't hear under 10m/s, and highly unlikely to physically register anything under 5m/s. In my job I've had people arguing the toss over two devices reporting a difference of 0.3m/s and I really have to stop short of telling them where to go. Bear in mind that you're likely hearing a latency of around 2m/s when playing an acoustic upright piano, considering the hammer mechanism and the time it takes the sound to travel from the string to your ear. Of course, that analogue latency can perhaps start to build up marginally if you're adding a number of digital pedals maybe. Generally speaking the digital conversion found on audio interfaces will be <1m/s each way, as you decrease the size and/or quality of the chip (as you might need to do for a pedal), less is possible. That said, some pedals will come with excellent conversion technology, for example I can't imagine Strymon spash out on Sharc DSP on their Big Sky and then skimp on the conversion. Si
and a decent headstock.
It is a crap headstock isn't it.....like really crap lol. Yeah perhaps I overstated that 'most' departing designers/brand owners do better, but I bet Musicman & G&L had a better reputation/was seen as higher-end when Fender went through the their awful late 70's/early 80's period. I think it's only relatively recently that they've pulled it back. But actually the example in my head was Michael Tobias with Tobias to MTD etc Si

I've noticed zero tonal deficiencies with my chambered Maruszczyk vs other solid body basses I have. Whilst there are other variables, all my basses are Alder bodies, maple necks and rosewood boards. It's just really bloody light with no neck-dive, 4 string, 33" plus Ultralite tuners obviously help here, but as has been mentioned, even with 34" and their standard tuners there doesn't seem to be any issues at all.
The Shark is what was missing from their line up to compete with the 44-02/55-02. It's a mashup of a Stingray/Sabre and I like it. I'd probably move that pickup an inch further from the bridge though. http://dlakinbasses....k-4-tech-specs/
Good god what a mess! Lakin has swung and missed big time with the D Lakin brand in my humble opinion, which is odd, usually it's the original brand that fails after takeover and the original brains behind the operation carries on being great with their new project. As has been mentioned, the D Lakin brand very much feels like a hobby Si

I modded an old Squire Bronco (30") to piccolo a long time ago. Was fun for a while for chordal stuff, but no real real-world usage for me. Unfortunately I didn't really know what I was doing when I strung it up, and so the setup and string tension was too much for the poor quality of the bass. High action and scared to pluck the strings for them breaking lol. Hasn't got the same range, but had much more fun with a 5 string bass with a high C, think I even had a 4 string strung A,D,G,C for a while (Tenor?) Si
Cool. I've only seen the YouTube vids but they look like fantastic basses. The Paul Turner one is great, what a day that must have been! Out of interests sake, what would one cost you or me?
About £5k

Maybe your kids are just into games, programming and visual arts etc.....whilst others are into music?! Things like Young Musicians Of The Year award along with Youtube kinda proves that music and virtuoso playing is alive and well. Si

Yeah I still use my old bi-fet every now and then to add some phatness! Shame about the low end loss though, they need to reissue the FX-25b without the Vol dip. Si
Brilliant gig, Flea used his shell pink Fender Jazz hybrid with a single humbucker in the Stingray position - surely going to be a Custom Shop line of these? Sparkling tone! Usual array of GK 4x10 and 1x15 cabinets too. I think I spotted a silver Modulus too used in By The Way (tuned) to drop D. Catch them if you can!
I asked the chap at Custom Shop who built both his Jazz/MM hybrid over Instagram, and he said there were no plans for a Custom Shop line of these. But I agree, they look fantastic. I have seen a few Maruszczyk basses with this spec though, and they'd certainly be cheaper Si

That Victor Wooten bloke, he's rubbish, he is. There, I said it!
I rarely listen to anything with a regular rhythm section. The occasional jazz record maybe.
Fair enough, I guess pure ambient soundscape stuff is the exception to the rule Si -

Funk I get, it's a genre....but not into groove? That seems odd, because surely groove is present in all music?! Punk music without groove is just really crap, out of time medicore punk music for example?! Si -
I've never heard Billy Jean sound so good!! Si

My votes would be for a COG 66 or an Xotic BB Bass Pre Simples Si

Interested what the 440 is like. Wish they'd re-issue the bass envelope filter. The mix control made that filter for me, but the volume drop made it unuseable live Si
