I have a Conklin Sidewinder 7. One of the best features is the evenness of tone all across the fingerboard. For example, E on the 12th fret of the E string sounds the same as E on the 2nd fret of the D string. Overall it makes the full range sound like the same bass. Nothing worse than a 6 that sounds likes a great 4-string with "afterthought" extra strings added that sound like they're being played on a completely different instrument.

Doesn't affect bass guitar for me at all. Can click really loudly against the upright fingerboard. At first this was a nuisance, but with a bit of practice sounds brilliant for slapping!

If volume's the most important, how about a cleanish 4x10? I use a Markbass 4x10 with the same head as you. Not exactly dripping with acoustic beauty, but punchy and loud.

I once tuned a d'addario 145 down to low f#. It sounded flabby and rubbish and the large string was too undefined. Reckon you'll need a really long scale to make it work. Turned out okay though. I bought a couple of pedals for really low noises and attached the redundant 145 string to the anchor on my ship!

+1 for a "hum free" bass (not that I've ever found one!) +1 for 1 volume only. preferably that doesn't change the tone as you increase volume -1 for the headless idea. I'm not sure space is normally is so tight that you can't fit in a couple of inches of headstock -1 for worrying about bowing. It's a great idea to learn upright though - just for the fun of it!

Get a different gig. Something totally different than you're used to. Maybe on a different instrument. Or learn to sing and play. Play everything left handed Tune your bass a different way. Take a string off - anything to make the bass a bit new or challenging. Get into some new stuff that has nothing to do with music Good Luck!

I miss my Bridge Cetus. They're brilliant - sound like a vintage DB and look awesome. Slippery body is a bit awkward - best to sit on a stool while you get used to it Steve. Good luck!

The adjustable bridge is a great idea. You can experiment and find the right set up for you (or even change depending on the gig!) I think the "right" height/ease of play is as much to do with the tension of your strings and shape of the fingerboard. Good Luck with your new bass!!

I bought it to add tube warmth to my crystal clean iAMP. It does this subtly (not exactly an SVT replacement). Keep turning the gain and you get a really usable grind with no loss of bass - in fact it thickens your sound in a dirty way! The pedal doesn't do full out screaming distortion, but is extremely usable throughout it's range of sounds. Included is the original power supply. When I got it, there was blue electrical tape on the end. Not sure if this is for identification or because it hides a loose connection. Never bothered to check because it has always worked perfectly - just thought I should tell you for 'ealth n' safety! [u][b]Boss SYB-3 Bass Synthesizer [/b][/u]£45 shipped NOW SOLD (IN RECORD TIME!) Now a classic - a ton of crazy sounds in a tiny box. Pedal is in near new condition. Although I love d'addarios for electric bass, I was really disappointed with the Helicore hybrid on DB. They sounded great initially (although not the easiest arco) but "died" fairly quickly. I replaced them with Corellis based on Bob Gollihur's website recommendation. They're light and easy on the hands - I agree with Bassworms comments about playability. I don't find them bassy or "rich and growly" though. Perhaps Bassworm's pickup, amp or set-up is better than mine! They'll do for now, but I won't be buying more!

Would you consider my Conklin Sidewinder 7? It's the one that was reviewed by Bassist in 1998 (attached I hope) An awesome bass - extremely even tone and very well made. It punches through every mix and is very versatile. If it were a 5 or 6 I would use it for every gig without question. It's just that I don't use the full range and it's a fair old beast when you're running around as I tend to in my current gig. I'd be looking for some cash top-up too!
