1. I agree. A touch over budget though (I'll be using the Take It Away scheme so I'll be paying monthly over 10 months for this. Can't really afford more than £40/month at this stage.
2. I agree about the comments of the B string. I'm really bothered that the Vintage may have a sub-par B string. How do the Ibanez's B strings stack up? I realise the BTBs have a 35" scale (I don't wanna start that 34" v 35" argument but the 35"s I've played have all had nicer B strings, both in feel and sound) so this may help but the majority of the others (Yamaha/other Ibbys) seem to have 34" scales.
3. Hello all Hopefully on Saturday I'll have shifted my current cheapy 6 string to a friend and have a little of a deposit towards a new bass. I'm looking at spending around £350, with £400 as an absolute maximum. I'll probably be looking at brand new basses as I'm going to make use of the "Take It Away" scheme. I listen to mostly "heavier" music (not extreme metal or anything but punk/rock/indie/metal etc), so I guess I'll be favouring a more modern tone (a lot of my favourite bass players use Stingrays), however, I also like to have a mess about in lighter genres like pop songs and even older ones (Phil Collins, just random songs from the past etc). I keep reading Machines review on the Vintage V1004DX and keep looking at buying this (going from the sound clips, the sound is very close to what I want). Can be had for £339 from DV247 (they offer the Take It Away scheme ordering over the phone). Does anyone else have any suggestions to any other basses that could be had that would give me a modern tone as well as a lot of versatility? Regards, Karl
4. End of the week bump
5. Thanks for the kind words
6. I've got this HB that I'm really not playing at the moment, and some car repairs are coming up and I think I could do with moving this bass on. I'm going to link to the original topic for pictures: CLICKY
Basic specs I know are: 2x MMB pick-ups, active electronics, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, ash-body, die-cast machine heads and chrome hardware. Colour: Transparent Black.
This is actually a great bass. I really enjoying playing it and if I could keep it I would, but as I mentioned I need to sort out my car. It's in need of a new set of strings, and perhaps a bit of a clean, but other than this and the couple of other bits mentioned in the original topic, it's a cracking bass. Doesn't feel too big, cracking B string (only a 34" scale), it's got a real nice 'something' in the tone that I love and think it would sound even better with a new set of strings. Any questions, don't hesitate to ask. £75 collected only (I'm based up in Wigan). Karl
7. A Fender Deluxe Jazz V looks very nice about now (not American though).
8. Very tempted by this for a new bass purchase! Now just to decide which bass! Oh and sell my Harley-Benton 6 string mean budget machine on here!
9. Thanks for the replies guys! I have a Harley Benton 6 string at the moment, but the strings are a little dead so I'm not getting as much attack as I could. PLus I'm only playing through an Ashdown Perfect 10. I really need to get a pedal pre-amp/multi-fx and have a proper play with EQ. I think perhaps I'm pushing the mids a little too much coz it always sounds so nasal to me. I appreciate what sounds good in a band context may not sound good on its own etc...I'm actually scared of mids, I don't like the sound of them.
10. In my tired stupor I made my orginal post come across a little unclear/uncoherant/rude etc. I do apologise. What I'm actually after it what kind of elements make up that sound. Is this a typical TRB sound? It sounds really tight in the low notes, and I realise the studio probably helped a little, but I've never managed to get such a nice tone (having played 4 years I still don't know how to make a great tone).
11. I don't want a complete rip off, but I like the tone is this vid: Is this tone likely to actually come from the violin bass? I'm guessing if so it's tuned BEAD as theres a lot of Low C action in here. Would a P bass be my kind of bass to be looking at in future? Cheers, Karl
12. Just to chip in, very nice amp. AND, the bass player from The Coronas has also let me play through his amp! It was awesome.
13. An absolutely amazing bass that I'd have off you in a snap if I wasn't an apprentice and had £1k in my bank
14.
I'm actually tempted despite having just bought the TRB! £80 is so cheap! Where are you based?
I'm all the way up in Wigan! Here's the original sale topic from when I bought it not too long ago. I really enjoy playing the bass but my car gets me around and to work so I guess I'd rather have that working the most! Quick edit to sort out the link.
15. I have a Harley Benton 6 string (budget model) that is actually quite nice, decent tone with a nice B string. I'm about to put it up for sale on here as I need the money towards a repair on my car, it'll be £80 but I won't ship. Could be a possibility just to get your hand in?
16. I keep thinking I'll buy a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz as my next and main bass, but then I also see the the Vintage AV4 in white and love it. I like the overall look of the Squier the best, but love the unsual "take" on the Jazz by Vintage. I'd also have another V940, THAT was a nice bass!
17. You got any pics?
18. And bloody loving it!
19. PM sent!
20. Dragged to a McFly gig a few years ago at the MEN, was expecting pop junk (went with the girlfriend at the time) and lots of girls screaming. There were indeed lots and lots of girls screaming their heads off, but the band were remarkably tight and put on a good show, so I ended up enjoying it!
21. Thanks again for the responses. My two exposures with each was lending someones Fender P (I can't remember if it was MIM or MIA) that I used in a punk band (only for a recording) and my Jazz experience was the Squier Deluxe Active V that again was used only in recording and during rehearsals in a soft rock band (I posted an mp3 in the recording section of the forum). The P felt at home in the punk band because of the attack of the tone, and the Jazz felt a lot smoother for the rock band, it felt "right". As mentioned, I do play a lot of punk and love the tone of a P, but I'm looking at broadening my horizons as it were, and often wonder if me buying a Jazz will leave me in good stead for future tonal options. Decisions, decisions....
22. How do Precisions sound with the tone rolled back? I have it stuck in my head that the P will always have the top end "clank" that you can get by playing hard/with a pick. I do like to have quite a "smooth" tone every now and again. Thanks to all for suggestions!
23.
Hi Karl! Must admit having never thought i would own or even play either i love my Precision, Simply for its simple setup - One Volume pot & one Tone pot! Can't go wrong. My Jazz is easier to play with a slimmer neck but it took me a while to find my sound using the seperate volume control's. The Classic Vibe models look and sound great, Good luck, Justin.

Get the one that feels right in your hands - otherwise your appraisal of each's advantages is sensible enough. I'm guessing a Precision might feel better to you if you've been playing 5 strings - bigger neck.
I don't think neck sizes will be a problem as I can play on anything really, although I feel a touch more comfortable on a Jazz neck!
24. Hey all, I currently have no bass, but hoping to get one around Christmas time. Squire Classic Vibe seems to be the best value and around my price range (about £250). I'm just stuck as to which one to get! I mostly play punk and rock songs, but I've recently been listening to a few 70s hits, Grease soundtrack etc, and realising how good the basslines are and that I need to learn some! My ideal tone would be something similar to the songs "You're The One That I Want" and "Greased Lightning" from the Grease soundtrack, but I wonder which one to go for? The Jazz seems more versatile but the Precision seems to offer more of a punch to the sound! I've always played 5 strings but I'm just going to stick with 4 now and learn my way around the bass properly. What would you choose? Cheers, Karl
