1. Sold a pedalboard to Lee. Easy transaction, top dude. Thanks! Shep
2. Indeed! Seems odd not having 5 Moogerfoogers anymore!
3. 2 can play at this game. Thought I'd join in... I've scrapped the collection and pretty much just kept the stuff I use now, so while I've tried more pedals than I've had hot dinners, I've stopped hoarding! After the cull I am left with... I may have a few others hiding somewhere or on long-term loan to people that I have forgotten about, but this is what's at the studio at the mo. There are a few new toys from COG on the way as well!
4. Agreed. I'm not usually one for rack FX, but this has me interested.
5. Nice. Toms a genius. I have 2 custom units already, I've tried every pedal in the range and I have another 2 or 3 (might be 4, Tom?) custom bits in the pipeline. Stunning build quality, excellent finish and perfect audio. Shep
6. It's an expensive mod, but a luxury pro job and fantastic work by the look of things... I'm impressed. The glowing blue is a nice touch too...
7. The Moog is the benchmark for a static/sweep-able Low Pass. It has a warm, fat and very analogue sound - something you'll either love or hate. They can add a little noise the the chain, but IMO for all the noise they add the tone is to die for! The IE Xero is also excellent. It's smaller, cheaper, uses a typical 'boss' power supply (the Moog is reverse polarity and needs and isolated supply) and sounds lovely. It have a very different voiceing to the Moog though, with a different resonance flavour. It doesn't sound as warm as the Moog, but is much more 'hi fi', again - you'll either love or hate that fact. Shep
8. Thanks dude! Appreciate it. Just finalising the mix on track 3 for the EP. One more to finish off!
9.
I quite like the feel of this although the vocals get a little lost at somepoint and 1:30 doesn't sit right with me but maybe that's the way it's supposed to be. Overall, I like it
I know the bit you're talking about - when I first heard it I also thought it was a little 'odd'. But in context, setting up for the glitching section just after it grew on me and Waatu. So it stayed
Wow Shep!! This is one cool project you have going on mate. Love it. That 'Ballpoint Magician' track is great. Beautiful production - sounds superb through my cans. The beat itself is really quirky and interesting. If you hadn't mentioned I'd have put money on the bassline being 100% synth-generated - amazing how you manage to get those sounds! (but then I know your pedal board is like the flight deck of the Space Shuttle... ). I like the vocals too - crisp delivery and caught my attention straight away. Honest opinion? I'd say it sounds as good as your Helical Mind stuff to my ears. I'd maybe even go so far as to say it's got a more original feel to it. You should tout this stuff around some labels - seriously - it's f-ing great!
Very high praise dude. Very kind. That bass line is the most straightforward of the EP - just a single track of bass. The others are MUCH more effects heavy. This tune is nothing but an OC-2 on my clean sound. -1 Octave up full and dry & -2 Octave off. Basically no mixing on the Bass needed either. That sound is lush! As for labels. It's on one (ok, I do own it)... Which is enough for now
10. Hey folks, Those of you that know me know I typically get involved in fairly unusual projects or stuff which involve my effects pedals outnumbering band members by 10 to 1. Well, this project could be the most ambitious of them all. Patient Zero is a truly international collaboration consisting of myself and Canadian beat-maker/producer Waatu Music. Waatu found me via Twitter a couple of years ago when I was playing bass for Our Helical Mind and approached us about doing some remixes, of which he did many... and they were awesome. He's been as much a fan of my playing and effects-heavy sound as I have his awesome take on modern HipHop and we'd spoke about doing more besides remixes together. Enter Patient Zero! PZ is a blend of HipHop and Electronica, created by both digital and analogue methods. Beats produced in Canada then come to me in the UK where I build all the other sounds and textures using the bass and effects. Some tunes are a single, solid traditional bass line, others have 4 tracks of bass going playing everything from Dubstep Wobble to ambient space sounds. Then, every single tune is pre-mixed and sent to a different MC from a different part of the world to treat as a blank canvass and add vocals as they see fit. The end result therefore being a collaborative effect combining totally different creative influences and sounds. We are currently putting the finishing touches to the 1st EP which will be titled 'Scarecrow Tactics' and alongside myself and Waatu, features the vocal talents of ThiNXx (South Africa), Turtle Handz (USA), Tusken Coalition (UK) and Dyzlexic (Australia). That's 5 countries represented from release 1. The 1st tune is available now as the 'single' - Ballpoint Magician ft ThiNXx can be heard & downloaded for FREE here!!! This is the straightest of the tunes where the bass is concerned, but I love the dark vibe that ThiNXx gave what really sounded like a funk tune before his vocals were down! Anyway, I hope you guys dig it. If you are a fan of hiphop and/or electronica then I'd love to hear your feedback/thoughts/comments/hate mail as applicable. We hope to have Scarecrow Tactics out by the end of May and already have a list of people interested in working with us for EP2, which we hope will not be far behind. If any of you guys are or know any MC's/Vocalists and live in a currently non-PZ-represented country then get in touch and help us with total global coverage!!! Please download the single (it is free after all) and give us a LIKE on Facebook - https://www.facebook...ientZeroProject Also find us on Bitnormal Records - http://www.bitnormal...t/patient-zero/ Shep
11. Horses for courses I guess. I can't see how a pitchblack has any simplicity over the Polytune or the Polytune over the pitchblack. They have an on/off button and when you play a string the screen tells you what the note is. I prefer the screen/read out on the Polytune. It find it more readable than the other options. It works for me and I guess that's the important thing.
12. I love it - I've owned them all and I find the Polytune & the mini the easiest to use and look at. My least favourite is the Pitchblack.
13.
Oh cheers! Very tempted to get some swamp ash ones, reckon they would be very nice, or something a bit darker so they dont look they are trying to hide . How does he cope with stacked knobs? They always seem a tad complex to find in wood at a reasonable price...
I don't know - I've never ordered any Fire him a message via eBay.
14. The knobs have been the biggest thing. Not being able to make contact with the pots has cured all static sounds.
15.
sounds cool! I hope you manage to get some recordings.
Apparently tonights jam/rehearsal is being recorded so the MC's can take the music away to work on stuff for the show - This is the only rehearsal before the gig. I'm unsure if the show id being recorded though.
16. Yeah - It has a Glockenklang 2-band in it. Very nice. A little less 'balls' in the low mids, but more more hi-fi.
17. A jazz quartet. Never met them. The Sax player and band leader is at Royal College of music. They are doing a night on 26th April here in Nottingham of HipHop and Funk inspired music with some MC's and vocalists and have been told by the promoter that they MUST have a bass player to do the HipHop thing right (they usually use brass to fill that role). He gave them my number. I meet them and rehearse tonight. Gig in a few weeks...
18. Super mega tiny set up for a HipHop/Funk session I've been booked for this month. Only rehearsal before the show is tomorrow... But I already know how much of a funk factory this set up is...
19. This bass has worked out to be everything I wanted. My shoulders and back are like new and it has a feel and tone to die for. It's amazing to think that the bulk of the pain I was experiencing was down to playing a bass scale which was too long for me! Anyway, small addition to the bass today... Custom Buckeye knobs... They look slightly off as they have an unfinished/Matt appearance (no oil or clear coat)... So I'd like to get them finished high gloss like the bass if possible in the near future. Shep
20. Jam with a new project today. Smallest set up I've had in ages...
21. Bump... Updated trades list - Trades I'd consider: TC Polytune/Polytune Mini Boss Harmonist or Super Shifter EBS Unichorus Fuzzrocious RatTail Most compact delay pedals -- trade plus cash where needed --
22. Janek is working on a new 3-peoece record with Jojo and John Davis too. 2 effected basses and mental drums. Sounds awesome.
23. Stolen from my website & blog: HERE Anyone that has been following my blog will know I'm a big fan of TheGigRig's product line. A while ago I reviewed the excellent Generator & Modular Power System as well as interviewing the man behind the company, Daniel Steinhardt. The last revision of my large effects rig featured a TheGigRig QuarterMaster 6 - A stunning true bypass switching strip. In fact, it was such an awesome product that after moving to a reduced setup recently featuring 2 smaller boards I invested in a QuaterMaster 4 as well! TheGigRig QuarterMaster: SPECIFICATION...

Highly robust, yet ultra light enclosure
Super compact footprint (only 5cm deep!!!)
Uses TheGigRig true bypass gold relay technology keeping tone perfectly intact and the switching silent
Soft-press foot switches, not clunky 3PDT switches
Available in 4, 6, 8 or 10 loop configurations
Comes with a 'tuner jack' to turn one loop into a silent tuning loop for a tuner pedal
Optional brackets available for mounting to 'Pedal Train' branded pedal boards
Powered by 9v centre negative power supply (regular 'Boss-Type' supply)
The QuarterMaster range on the offical TheGigRig website. FEATURES: 9/10 The QuarterMaster is a true bypass strip. I've owned one or two. We all know what you use a bypass switch for and it's no lie that they all do the same at it's most basic level. The QuarterMaster range has everything a bypass switcher should have - a switch & an LED along with a send and return jack for each loop. The unit also features your common 9v 'Boss-Style' power input and an in/out jack for the unit. The components are all high quality, with bright LED's for stage use and the internal relay switching system means you get perfect audio quality without the audio going through unreliable switches. Every QuarterMaster also comes with an 'Insert Jack' plug which you can insert to the return input of any loop to mute that loop when active. This allows you to turn one loop into either a mute switch or allows you to connect a tuner pedal to the send for silent tuning. It's a simple idea/addition to the package, but one that is well thought-out and makes a nice addition. A mounting kit is available for those who use Pedal Train boards and would prefer it bolted down as opposed to Velcro. This is however an additional purchase. PERFORMANCE: 9/10 The performance of the QuarterMaster range is excellent. The enclosure is small and compact meaning very little movement is needed in the foot from the floor to the switches. This may seem like an odd comment, but many true bypass strips that I have previously owned were all in very tall enclosures. A low profile makes a big difference to an ergonomic set up. The soft-press switches are another HUGE nod to the performance of this unit. Personally I HATE 3PDT heavy duty switches as they are 'clunky' and require a fair stomp to activate. I LOVE non-latching switches (such as those found on Moogerfoogers) but these often come with less than perfect buffers which mess with your tone. TheGigRig have used a fantastic medium - a heavy duty-esque switch with a softer action which requires much less force than your average stomp box switch but which still has a definite 'click' (rather than clunk!) for confirmation. The LED's are a nice bright blue and are certainly not going to be missed on a bright stage either. Having gigged my QuaterMasters now over 30 times I can happily report that they perform perfectly. - My current 2-board set up using the QuarterMaster 4 & 6 switchers: BUILD QUALITY: 9/10 Build quality can't be faulted. The units are very tough yet surprisingly light weight, so lightweight in fact that if you put one in your pocket (be it a very deep pocket) you'd forget it was there. The components used appear to be of the highest quality with great quality jack sockets and switches. My only minor niggle regarding the build is that the hex-screws holding the enclosure together stand proud along the front edge of the unit. In the case of using a pedal board with a front lip, this means the screws hold the QuarterMaster back from the front of the board by approximately 3mm. This figure is small and 99.9% of people would think nothing of if it, but for those people counting the mm of space on the board it's worth pointing out that these small screw bolts are not included in the quoted enclosure size on the site (making the unit closer to 5.5cm deep). However, this still makes is smaller than pretty much every other true bypass strip on the market. VALUE FOR MONEY: 8/10 As always this is a very subjective point. TheGigRig do not make 'cheap' products, they make high quality professional equipment for people who want that option. Using high quality components, with the excellent relay system, paired with it being built, assembled, tested and QC'd in-house make it an expensive product, but one that is worth every penny. There are cheaper bypass strips available but you simply won't find one which oozes quality like the QuarterMaster. An excellent product which is worth every penny! CUSTOMER SUPPORT: 10/10 It's hard for me to do anything but repeat myself from the review of the Generator & Modular Power System. Dan is the face and voice of the company as well as being the man behind much of it's development. He is on hand via email, phone (unless he has a soldering iron or Flying V in his hands) and social networking on a daily basis and always happy to help get things right. TheGigRig have become a company with a reputation for great customer service and my experienced of dealing with them confirms this. OVERALL: 9/10 The QuarterMaster is a fantastic product which is well thought-out with regards to functionality, performance and footprint. It's price point is spot-on given its significant audio & build quality and it's supported by great customer service. A well deserved 9/10... In fact, I'm considering a 3rd QuarterMaster for a smaller board I have in mind. Shep - Dan's walk-through of a recent competition give-away prize pedal board featuring the QuarterMaster 6:
