  1. the speed varies considerably , the needle is travelling faster across the first tracks and slows as it gets to the middle.
  2. I recall a Peter Gabriel interview regarding track positions on his ‘So’ album , they were out of his preferred order on the album, as the pressings handle bass better on the first few tracks of each side. the needle travels faster along the outside and creates more energy from the groove .
  3. As a punter I was watching a great band playing rocked up TV theme tunes , a great night was being had by all . Smart arsé here notices the theremin at the front of stage and decides he can chip in and play it from in front of the ( 1 foot high ) stage. it turns out I could influence the thing and the singer is playing along with this... until someone knocks me from behind and I faceplant the stage . quick as a flash the singer’s shins are pinning my shoulders to the stage and he is thrusting away to much hilarity . everyone denies bumping into me , so I may have just been pi55ed 😂 I’ve grown a bit wiser now, but that gig last year was excellent 😁
  4. Well then , here we go , dive in
  5. Congratulations to @skankdelvar , a popular one with the voters and duly collected the reward of being the Honourable Picture Provider By way of introduction ... "This month's pic is Forge Valley, Scarborough by John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836 - 1893). No great significance, it's just a picture I like." Simple rules ✔️ Entries must be <5 minutes and recorded this month. ✖️ No illegal samples, copyright infringements or other snide goings-on ✖️ No Bagpipes. please no bagpipes, the Platinum Jubilee day truce didn't materialise . panpipes only if you have too. ✖️ No voting for your own entry. We'll know. And we'll shame you. A line or two offering an insight to your inspiration/track choice will be good as well , it works nicely on the voting thread. The Deadline for entries is Midnight on Thursday 23rd June good luck everyone
  6. Congratulations @skankdelvar , a brilliant piece , superbly executed and a popular winner by all counts, from a quality bunch of tunes and songs 👍
  7. This is a monthly challenge where members can write and record a piece of music. this thread is for everyone to vote for their favourite. the thread that created the ideas is
  8. Congratulations to both @Doctor J and @NickD on their joint win in a tightly fought end to the April Challenge. After a small discussion the photo was offered by NickD and agreed by all parties and has proved to be a very positive and inspiring image His preamble ... " I was messing with vapour and light for a photography project last year, and this reminded me of the smoky, fleapit cinemas of my childhood, but I reckon it's pretty wide open to interpretation." There we have it , the only thing left is to offer up the tunes inspired by the picture to the Basschat community and their 3 votes each , so here they are 1 @NickD I get a Mothership, beam me up, vibe from the picture, so kinda fancied the mid-paced, big chorus, funky thing. Obviously it's a picture of a projector, so the evils of TV gave me my subject matter. 2 @xgsjx Had an idea for a trance song, picked up the bass & something not trance came out. But I liked it, so that's the bassline. Then I set about mixing trance, metal & breakbeat together to come up with this nonsense. 3 @Dad3353 I started off with a blank sheet and doodled some chord sequences; this was the result. 4 @Nail Soup In the picture I saw the light.... so theme of song is 'seeing the light'. Musically it is a nod to the various spiritually-tinged songs on the Velvet Underground's 3rd album 5 @Leonard Smalls The picture reminded me of the Moody Blues' Malapropic misquote of Milton, which further reminded me of a schoolmate who swore his dad had just bought a new Austin Fandango. Hence a song about cars ending in "O", which obviously meant a weird jazzy ambient bit sandwiched between 2 slabs of Funky Cockney and Groovy Scouse... 6 Lurksalot a tale of unrequited love with tunnel references 7 @fingers211 Please, let me explain ! I had a somewhat grandiose idea. First I would find a numerical value for the colours of the spectrum, (yeah right). Then, I would convert those numerical values into musical notes that would base themselves around my given value of middle C. I would then play the colours in the picture as notes. Well let me tell you, I ended so far up myself that it got painfull !!! 8 @upside downer The image made me think of a swirly time and space portal from those old 60s and 70s TV shows so here's a slightly-skewed-in-places tune with a few echoey bits thrown in for a wobbly 'Woah, time travel, eh?' feel. But what is time? “Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so” said Ford Prefect to Arthur Dent as the Earth was about to be demolished in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Fair enough. Who am I to argue? 9 @skankdelvar I intended to take a break from the comp this month. Then I saw the image and it just screamed 'Do a Floyd rip-off!' Well there you go , if you have taken the time to listen through , I have no doubt that you will have enjoyed the time spent. you have 3 votes to try and separate these superb entries , good luck to the participants and voters Voting will end at midnight on 31st May
  9. That's a first , the last 2 entries squeeking in at 4.59 , rules is rules and we appreciate the dedication to those timings Suffice to say the voting thread will be up soon , but I have got distracted by listening through as I build up the thread. F**k me you guys have all played blinders this month , hats off
  10. This is my entry based on the picture chosen by last months winners NickD and DoctorJ This track probably needs a lot more doing with it, but ... a) as mentioned above , I've got used to it and b) my old jalopy of a PC was able to handle this to this point , this is obviously as nature intended it , a tale of unrequited love with tunnel references Technical , Ez drummer with lots of played midi additions, bass and guitars through waves GTR3 FX, vocals messed with CLA vocals , and a splash of ozone 8 to wash it over. I think it works better louder than Soundcloud wants to play it, but that might just be the way my stuff is set up. Lyrics
  11. I’m in the same club 😂 however, 1 thing I have sussed, is that to get a decent sound coming out of the DAW , you have to put a good sound in to it . Not necessarily the quality of the instrument , though I’m sure that is important , but playing technique is the thing, if it’s played well chances are it will sound ok. voice quality on vocals for instance, record a nice sounding voice , a touch of compression and reverb , set the level and that’s it ..... just like my voice 😁😁 I’m never going to get to the production standard I originally aimed at, but just try to get more competent at getting a better played recording , though that involves too much cut and paste at times 🤦‍♂️
  12. Give the wolf a banana before it eats my Grandma !
  13. nail on the head here Nick. That is what happens to me every month
  14. I love this colour , I had to let it go as I couldn’t play it 😂 , but love the colour
  15. I use a focusrite 2i4 , it has a control to set monitoring direct from the guitar or all through the DAW and variable through all settings between .
  16. No Rest for the wicked as they say .
  17. Congratulations to both @Doctor J and @NickD on their joint win in a tightly fought end to the April Challenge. After a small discussion the photo has been offered by NickD and agreed by all parties The preamble ... Simple rules ✔️ Entries must be <5 minutes and recorded this month. ✖️ No illegal samples, copyright infringements or other snide goings-on ✖️ No Bagpipes. please no bagpipes, the April fool's day truce now well and truly Expired. panpipes only if you have too. ✖️ No voting for your own entry. We'll know. And we'll shame you. A line or two offering an insight to your inspiration/track choice will be good as well , it works nicely on the voting thread. 18. Well done gents, top work and worthy of the accolades 😁 If you want to decide who is to choose a picture that’s fine , alternatively I can invoke the tie breaker of truth 😁
  19. That took some critical listening, I had to use my half a point analysis at the death , most enjoyable 👍
  20. are you ready to rumble ...... well, lets get ready to rumble ... and......... RUMBLE
  21. Its voting time again and the inspirational image was chosen by last months winner, @skankdelvar who is on a roll, and is approaching the hallowed ground of a treble! I'm no stato , but that's a rare thing round these parts , however we have some serious challengers for you to consider . some notes provided by the man himself... Before radar was perfected, aircraft were detected using acoustic locators which enhanced and amplified the sound of an aircraft's engine. The smallest version was a pair of acoustic mirrors which the user strapped either side of his head. Please Choose your favourite 3 entries from the following. 1 @Dad3353 I was lucky, as I remembered this case from some decades ago, having read an article in the Boy's Own Paper of the time. The first successful human biological re-engineering, which enabled this man, born into a human body but with his real nature that of a fennic, to at last reconcile his psyche with his physical appearance. Early days for these medical miracles, but the operations and treatments finally enabled the fellow to become the creature that his mind had always known himself to be. 2 @Doctor J This has come together influenced by a few recent things of note, like the "Three on E" thread, a trip to Berlin and a bout of Covid. Four is one more than three and more is more, says Yngwie, so four it is. The bass riff came a bit too easily so I hope I haven't subconsciously pilfered it from somewhere. I can't place it, though. 3 @Leonard Smalls I thought - that geezer's got some serious phones: feel the weight, feel the sound, heavy pressure's going down! 4 @fingers211 A simple ditty really. The poor chap hears all the twaddle the world and it's media have to offer. 5 @NickD Started with the idea of how in modern times a whisper can be heard around the world, then got into the idea that a dumb meme travels much faster than anything involving hard reality... and just developed from there. 6 @upside downer Our hero is doing his bit for the war effort but he keeps on picking up sounds from the wild and wonderful world of pop music. Nonetheless, he'll do his very best until he can have a well earned drinks break. 7 Lurksalot it's a bit on the simple side and I got lost a few times even doing this. Mercifully no singing this time just some speakage! 8 @Nail Soup The picture made me think of eavesdropping... did a bit of research and found stuff like a quote from Thornton Wilder (me neither!) : "There's nothing like eavesdropping to show you that the world outside your head is different from the world inside your head". Built up the lyrics with such ideas. God knows where the music came from 🙂! 9 @skankdelvar Basically the song's about something but I'm not sure exactly what. Probably something grim some brilliant, humourous and well observed compositions again this month , fair play So it's your favourite 3 then Voting will end at midnight Saturday 30th April Good Luck All
  22. I'm done then , itys a bit on the simple side and I got lost a few times even doing this ! Mercifully no singing this time just some speakage and plenty of dodgy guitar work ! I used a couple of freesound soundFX to give it some direction but its all ive got .
  23. should he be finger’s211 😜😁
  24. I’ve done a silly one , I’ve tried to be all cool and clever recently , and it doesn’t seem to suit 😂 so daft is due ... a few tweaks yet 😁
