3. I messed about with a whole load of different density foam a couple of years ago, and the sound I liked the best was . . . . . . some rolled up kitchen towel.
4. I'm probably a better bass player than guitarist, but I did gig with a mate's band on guitar last year. I gigged with the same band on drums the year before and started out playing a lot of the songs with said mate on bass to begin with
5.
I went to school with luke bell from panic cell
he sounds like a character from Viz
6. I've been entertained by a recent group on my FB regarding 70s and 80s bands in my town, and within that discovered that a lad I went to school with is a jazz DB player and teacher: http://arniesomogyi.com Some nice tunes on that site.
7. what's the difference between a "standard" and a "cover"
8.
Do those Gibson-style control knobs fit onto CTS pots?
[pedant] they're Strat-style [/pedant]
9. the trans red might look better with the all black hardware and neck - the orange suits chrome, and a maple neck/fingerboard.
10. I'm not sure about the matching headstock, but orange would be nice - maybe trans orange . .
11. well I was originally planning to paint the neck black because there's an off-colour bit in it that doesn't look great, and the body bright yellow to offset the black (or maybe red) - but I have been considering natural . .
12. I'm going to paint the neck black, and I was planning to paint the body a solid colour, but the wood looks so good I might have to just use some clear lacquer. .
13. Bass #4 is a slightly more P-shape, but I've changed the lower horn from my first two builds to match #3 as: 1 ) I like it, and b ) it gives better access to those all-important top frets
14. If I can hear enough vocal to know where I am in the song, and enough drums to be sure of the current tempo then that'll do me, most of all I want to hear me good and loud, and my MB combo handles that
15. many thanks folks ! 727mm it is ! just got to remember what happened to the pickups now . .
16. Possibly my last bass build is going to use up some Bareknuckle P Bass pickups I have, and I'd like to put them in the "right" place. So, if one or two of you could measure from the nut to the line between the two pickups (just to see if there's any variation) then I'd be grateful. If not then I'll have to remember to take a ruler next time I go to PMT
17.
Our drummer broke his finger last week! We have a new singer joining our band and a lot of work to do. Bugger!!
18.
Same here..... love the design. What finish are you doing?
Apart from maybe a bit of a tint to the body, just clear lacquer - I'm quite minimalist in my tastes these days.
19. I don't build for customers anymore (long story) but occasionally I rouse myself to finish a project. Here's a pic of a nearly finished bass which might end up getting gigged at some point, though it's got a hard job to beat my main bass. Swamp Ash body with a Purpleheart neck and fingerboard. Bare Knuckle Jazz Bass pickups
20. I play ska/reggae with a bass tuned BEAD - it works for me I've had a few 5 strings but never really liked the extra weight or neck width.
21. if I was a moderator I'd now wait until Dom gets a new bass and then temporarily kick him off the forum, but that's why I'm not a moderator ;O)
